Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen wildfire smoke worsens air quality, reduce time and exertion outdoors, make one indoor room cleaner, and check current local guidance. If you must go outside, a well-fitting NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator can reduce exposure to smoke particles—but it does not make hazardous conditions safe or protect against gases such as carbon monoxide.
Why wildfire smoke can affect your health
Wildfire smoke is a mixture of fine particles and gases from burning vegetation, buildings, and other materials. It can travel far beyond the fire, so smoke-related health precautions may matter even when flames are not nearby. The CDC notes that smoke can make anyone sick, while some people face a higher risk. CDC: How Wildfire Smoke Affects Your Body
Possible short-term effects include coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, stinging eyes, a scratchy throat, runny nose, irritated sinuses, headache, tiredness, chest pain, or a fast heartbeat. People will not necessarily experience all of these symptoms, and this list is not a diagnostic tool.
People with asthma, heart or lung conditions, and other chronic health conditions should take particular care. Children, older adults, and pregnant people are also among the groups highlighted in federal wildfire guidance; risk is not limited to these groups. CDC: How to Protect Yourself from Wildfire Smoke

Check conditions before deciding to go out
Smoke levels can change during the day. Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and updates from your state or local health and air-quality agencies. Follow local evacuation, sheltering, and return-home instructions; a respirator or air cleaner is not a substitute for an official evacuation order.
When smoke is affecting your area, reduce outdoor exertion. Choose a lower-intensity activity or wait for better air when possible. NIOSH’s public guidance advises going outside only when conditions are in the Good or Moderate categories, but that advice should not be treated as a universal threshold for every person or local alert. Follow the guidance issued for your circumstances. NIOSH: Wildfires

Make indoor air cleaner
Staying indoors and reducing smoke that enters your home is a primary way to lower exposure. A clean-air room can help while you shelter indoors, though it cannot be guaranteed to be completely smoke-free. AirNow: Be Smoke Ready
- Close windows and doors when outdoor smoke is affecting air quality. Choose a room that can be closed off from outside air.
- Use central HVAC carefully. When appropriate for your system, set it to recirculate and use the highest-efficiency filter the manufacturer says the system can accommodate. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions.
- Use a portable room air cleaner if available. Choose one sized for the room. AirNow advises running it continuously at its highest fan speed to maximize filtration. Avoid ozone-generating air cleaners.
- Limit indoor particle sources. Avoid smoking, candles, incense, gas, wood or propane fires, frying or broiling food, and vacuuming while smoke is affecting air quality.
These options serve different situations: a room cleaner filters air in a room, a compatible HVAC filter works through the home’s system, and a respirator is worn by a person who must be outdoors. A room cleaner should be sized to the room; an HVAC filter must be compatible with the system; and a respirator depends on a close fit and seal. None of these should be assumed to remove every smoke component or make unsafe conditions safe.

If you cannot avoid going outside
A properly fitting, NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator may reduce exposure to smoke particles. Follow the respirator’s instructions, cover your nose and chin, and check the seal each time you put it on. If it does not seal closely, try another model or size.
Cloth masks, surgical masks, bandanas, and tissues are not designed to filter very small smoke particles effectively or provide the same seal. Filtering facepiece respirators do not protect against gases such as carbon monoxide. Do not use a respirator as a reason to remain outdoors during evacuation conditions or to disregard health advice. NIOSH: Wildfires

Plan ahead if you have a chronic condition
Talk with your health-care provider about wildfire smoke and your condition. Keep needed medicines available, follow your written asthma action plan if you have one, and monitor air-quality reports so you can act before symptoms worsen. CDC guidance for people with chronic conditions emphasizes making a plan with a provider and following existing treatment instructions. CDC: How to Protect Yourself from Wildfire Smoke
When symptoms call for medical help
If trouble breathing or other symptoms do not improve, CDC advises considering evacuation and seeking appropriate help. For severe or worsening symptoms, contact local emergency or medical services. There is no single symptom threshold in the cited guidance that applies to everyone, so use your clinician’s advice and local emergency instructions.
