Protect your GST Portal account by keeping your password, security answers and OTPs private, signing in through gst.gov.in rather than links in unexpected messages, and acting quickly if you suspect someone has accessed the account. The portal may ask for an OTP in certain situations, but its login manual does not say that an OTP is required on every login. If you see unauthorized activity or suspect data has been exposed, the GST Portal’s enrolment guide says to inform the GST Helpdesk immediately.
Account protection is a combination of prevention and response: avoid giving another person the means to sign in, use the portal’s own password and recovery steps, and report suspected access or data leakage promptly. It is also important to distinguish the general GST Portal from a separate e-invoice Invoice Registration Portal (IRP); a security requirement described for one system does not automatically apply to the other.

What protection the GST Portal describes—and what it does not guarantee
The GST Portal’s login manual describes username-and-password access with OTP authentication in specified circumstances. It says an OTP may be requested at first login, when signing in from a new device, after repeated login attempts, when more than ten devices are used in an hour, when the device fingerprint does not match, or when attempts from distant locations occur within a short period. It also describes blocks for some access conditions.
A browser or device that has already been authenticated may not prompt for an OTP on every subsequent login. That is why the absence of a new OTP prompt is not, by itself, evidence that someone has bypassed security. Equally, these checks are portal behaviors, not a guarantee that every unauthorized attempt will be detected or stopped. Do not share an OTP just because a caller claims that the portal has triggered one.

The different prompt conditions matter because users may encounter a challenge at a time that seems unexpected. A first login or a new device is specifically among the situations described in the manual. Repeated attempts, a mismatch in the device fingerprint, or access attempts from distant locations within a short period may also lead to a prompt. The manual’s list explains possible portal behavior; it does not give users a way to diagnose exactly why a particular prompt appeared. If a login prompt or block is unexpected, pause and use the portal’s own instructions rather than guessing at the cause or responding to a third-party request for a code.
The reference to more than ten devices in an hour is a stated portal threshold, not advice to test the limit or a personal device allowance. Similarly, the manual’s mention of blocks for some access conditions does not promise that the portal will block every suspicious attempt. Treat these as authentication checks, not as a substitute for keeping credentials and OTPs private.
The manual’s descriptions of login checks and password rules can change and may lag behind the live portal. Treat the current GST Portal screen as the authority when a procedure or requirement differs from the manual. These portal checks are not a guarantee that every attempt will be detected, and they do not eliminate the need to respond when account activity looks unfamiliar.

Keep credentials and OTPs out of other people’s hands
The GST Portal’s “Enrolment of Existing Taxpayer with Provisional ID and Password” guide advises taxpayers not to share account credentials or security-question answers. It states: “No government department or official would ask for your account credentials or OTP details.” This warning concerns requests for those sensitive details; it does not mean every contact from a government office is fraudulent.
- Keep your username, password, security answers and OTP private. Do not send them to a caller, email sender or messaging contact, even if that person claims to be an official or to be helping with a filing.
- Do not open an unknown URL from an unexpected email or message. Go to gst.gov.in yourself and check there, or verify the request through a support route you already know to be official.
- Be especially careful on a public or shared computer. The enrolment guide cautions against saving a password in a browser or system in that context. That is not a blanket instruction to avoid every secure password-storage method on a personally controlled device.
An urgent tone or an explanation about a return, account verification or an OTP does not change the basic rule: do not reveal the code or credentials to another person. If someone asks for them, stop the conversation and verify any claimed account issue through the portal or a known official support route. A legitimate request for assistance with tax work does not require you to give away your sign-in details or security answers.
Do not rely on the appearance of a message as proof that a link is safe. The practical instruction in the official guide is to be cautious with suspicious emails and unknown URLs. Instead of using the link in a message, type the portal address yourself or use a route you independently know to be official. This keeps the sign-in and recovery process anchored to the GST Portal rather than to an unexpected message.
The enrolment guide says OTPs used in that enrolment process are valid for 10 minutes. That figure is specific to the process described in the guide; it should not be assumed to describe the validity period of every GST Portal OTP. Whatever validity period applies to a particular code, never share it with someone who contacts you or treat an OTP as safe to disclose merely because it expires.

Use the portal’s documented login and password procedures
When signing in
- Open gst.gov.in directly instead of following an unsolicited sign-in link.
- Enter your own username and password. Keep both private, including when someone else is assisting with a return or account task.
- If the portal requests an OTP, use the code sent to the registered mobile number or email in the circumstances described by the login process. Do not relay it to another person.
- If a login prompt or block is unexpected, stop and check the portal’s own instructions rather than trying repeated credentials or responding to a message asking you to disclose a code.
The login manual describes OTPs sent to the registered mobile number and email for the specified authentication circumstances. It does not say that every login will require this step. A familiar, previously authenticated browser or device may not trigger a new OTP prompt; a new device or other listed condition may. Do not assume that a missing OTP prompt means something is wrong, and do not assume that receiving an OTP means another person is entitled to use it.
The GST Portal manual describes a password 8–15 characters long that includes uppercase and lowercase letters, a number and a special character; it also says a new password cannot match the previous five. Its password-change note says a change is mandatory after 120 days. These are instructions recorded in the manual, not a guarantee that the live portal still applies precisely the same rules. Follow the requirements displayed by the portal when setting or changing a password.
These figures describe portal policy rather than a cybersecurity study or a promise about account safety. If the live screen gives a different requirement, follow the current screen. Do not delay a necessary password change because you are trying to reconcile an older manual with a changed interface.
If you may have exposed your password
Change it promptly if you believe someone else may know it. Use the GST Portal’s password-change or recovery process rather than a link supplied in a suspicious message. The login manual describes password recovery using OTPs sent to the registered mobile number and email. If you cannot complete the process with your registered contact channels, use the portal’s official support route; do not give a caller your credentials or OTP as a workaround.

The distinction between a change and a recovery matters in practice. If you can still access the account and believe the password may be known to somebody else, the official guidance is to change it promptly. If you cannot sign in, the manual describes an OTP-based recovery process using the registered mobile number and email. In either case, start from the official portal rather than an email or message link. If the registered channels do not let you complete the documented steps, seek help through an official route instead of sharing secret details with a person who offers to do it for you.
The guide’s warning about not saving passwords on a public or shared system should be read in that context. It is a caution against leaving credentials stored where other users may access them, not a blanket ban on secure password storage on a personally controlled device. The key point is to retain control of the password and not leave it exposed on a shared machine.
What to do if you suspect unauthorized access or a fraudulent filing
- Stop sharing access details. Do not provide more passwords, security answers or OTPs to anyone who contacts you about the incident.
- Change the password promptly if it may be known to someone else. Use the official portal’s change or recovery process, which the login manual describes as OTP-based through the registered mobile number and email.
- Contact the GST Helpdesk immediately. The enrolment guide says: “If you suspect any unauthorized activity on your user account or any loss/ leakage of data, please inform GST Helpdesk immediately.” Use an official support route rather than contact details or links in an unsolicited message.
- Review notices sent to your registered email and mobile number. They may help you spot account-related activity, but do not treat a message alone as proof that a filing is valid or fraudulent; check through the portal or a known official support channel.
Take the concern seriously even if you are not certain what happened. The official guide specifically covers suspected unauthorized activity on the user account and suspected loss or leakage of data. You do not have to establish the full cause before notifying the Helpdesk. When you contact support, describe what you observed and ask what action is applicable; do not send credentials or OTPs in an attempt to prove identity through an unsolicited contact.

Keep the response in the right order: stop disclosing secrets, address a potentially exposed password through the official change or recovery process, and notify the GST Helpdesk promptly about suspected access or data exposure. Reviewing registered email and SMS notices can help you identify something to ask about, but it does not replace reporting the concern. The cited guidance does not specify a dedicated incident hotline, response time or legal remedy, so do not rely on an assumed number or turnaround.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The cited guidance does not set out an incident-specific process for reversing a filing, a dedicated incident hotline, a response-time commitment, or a legal remedy. If a filing appears unauthorized, report the account or data concern to the Helpdesk promptly and ask what action applies to that filing; do not assume that changing a password automatically withdraws or reverses a submission. Account recovery and treatment of a filed return or other submission are separate questions, and the cited instructions do not say that completing one resolves the other.
Likewise, a message in your email or SMS inbox is a clue to review, not conclusive proof about who filed something or whether an action is authorized. Confirm what you can through the portal or a known official support channel. The guidance does not establish a separate law-enforcement reporting route or explain filing liability in these circumstances; avoid relying on an unverified process or assuming a particular outcome.
GST Portal security is not the same as IRP security
The general GST Portal and an e-invoice Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) are separate systems. A knowledge page for the IRIS IRP discusses mandatory multi-factor authentication for that IRP. That requirement should not be presented as a general GST Portal login rule. Follow the authentication instructions of the specific system you are using, and do not infer that a control described for one portal applies to the other.
This distinction is useful when a taxpayer works across both systems. A requirement shown on the IRIS IRP knowledge page applies to that separate IRP context; it is not evidence that the general GST Portal requires the same mandatory MFA for every login. Conversely, the GST Portal’s described OTP conditions should not be treated as a description of how a separate IRP authenticates its users. Check the instructions for the system you are actually accessing.

A GST Council-hosted update dated 20 July 2025 described an upcoming email and SMS notification for authorized signatories when an ASP obtains OTP consent to access taxpayer data through APIs. Because that update described the notification as an enhancement to come, it does not establish that the alerts are currently active. Check current GSTN or portal notices before relying on such a notification as a live security control.
Where notices arrive through registered email or mobile channels, review them carefully and investigate activity you do not recognize through the portal or a known official support route. Do not share an OTP to resolve an alert or to let someone else access data on your behalf.

The notification described in the July 2025 update concerns an ASP obtaining OTP consent for access to taxpayer data through APIs. It is distinct from the portal’s ordinary login OTP behavior. Because the update called the notification an upcoming enhancement, an authorized signatory should not assume that an email or SMS alert for every such consent is already available or that absence of an alert proves no access occurred. Check a current GSTN notice for the live status, and continue to protect OTPs and report suspected unauthorized activity.
If an ASP-related message appears, use it as a reason to verify the activity rather than as an invitation to disclose a code. The update does not establish that an OTP-consent notification is a complete record of access or a substitute for account security. Nor does it say that the alert can reverse access or a filing. Keep the response anchored to what the official current notice and portal actually provide.
A practical routine for taxpayers and authorized signatories
- Keep control of the registered email address and mobile number used for portal authentication, and review notices sent to those channels.
- When a practitioner or another person helps with tax work, do not hand over your account password, security answers or OTP. The official guide’s warning applies even when the request is framed as routine assistance.
- Use the portal’s current login and recovery screens for account actions. The manual is useful for understanding the documented process, but its detailed password policy and authentication behavior may be revised.
- If something about account access or data exposure seems unauthorized, change potentially exposed credentials and notify the GST Helpdesk promptly rather than relying on an alert or password change alone.
For an authorized signatory, the same precautions apply: keep the login credentials and security answers private, treat OTPs as confidential, and review messages sent to the registered contact channels. The fact that a person is coordinating a return or is familiar with the taxpayer’s business does not make it appropriate to share account secrets. If another person needs help, use a process that does not require handing over your password or OTP.
Before acting on a prompt, distinguish the system and the action involved. A GST Portal sign-in prompt, an OTP-based password recovery step, and an ASP’s OTP consent to access data through APIs are not interchangeable events. A mandatory MFA rule described for the IRIS IRP is also not a general GST Portal rule. Using the right system’s own instructions avoids importing assumptions from another process.
For routine account hygiene, the practical checks are modest: use the official address, keep secret details to yourself, avoid unknown links, and pay attention to registered contact channels. If access may be compromised, do not wait for a planned password-change interval; the enrolment guide says to change the password promptly when someone else may know it and to inform the Helpdesk immediately if unauthorized activity or data leakage is suspected. The manual’s 120-day password-change note describes a recorded policy, not a reason to defer action after exposure.
No physical product purchase is necessary to perform these steps. The official instructions support portal-based credential practices and reporting, not a specific security accessory or commercial service. If you need filing assistance, do not let that need become a reason to disclose account secrets to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Does the GST Portal require an OTP every time I log in?
No. The login manual describes OTP prompts for specified circumstances, including first login, access from a new device and other listed conditions. It says a previously authenticated browser or device may not require a new OTP on every login. The exact live behavior may change, so follow the current portal prompt.

What should I do if someone asks me for my GST Portal OTP?
Do not share it. The GST Portal enrolment guide says government departments or officials will not ask for account credentials or OTP details. Verify any claimed issue by going directly to gst.gov.in or using a known official support route.
How do I respond if my password may have been exposed?
Change it promptly using the GST Portal’s official password-change process. If you cannot sign in, the login manual describes recovery using OTPs sent to the registered mobile number and email. Do not use a recovery link from an unsolicited message or disclose the OTP to another person.
What if I suspect someone filed something without authorization?
Stop sharing credentials and OTPs, change a password that may be known to someone else, and inform the GST Helpdesk immediately about suspected unauthorized activity or data leakage. Ask the Helpdesk what action applies to the filing. The cited guidance does not describe a specific filing-reversal process, so do not assume changing your password withdraws a submission.

What are the password rules?
The login manual describes an 8–15 character password with uppercase and lowercase letters, a number and a special character. It says a password cannot match the previous five and notes a mandatory change after 120 days. These details may change; follow the requirements shown on the current GST Portal.
Does the 10-minute OTP expiry apply to every GST Portal code?
The enrolment guide states that OTPs used in that enrolment process are valid for 10 minutes. That statement should not be generalized to every OTP issued for every portal task.
Is mandatory MFA on the IRIS IRP also required for the general GST Portal?
Not on the basis of the IRIS IRP knowledge page. It discusses MFA for that separate IRP system. Follow the instructions for the system you are using rather than treating a separate IRP rule as a general GST Portal login requirement.
Are email and SMS alerts for ASP OTP consent already active?
A GST Council-hosted update dated 20 July 2025 described email and SMS notifications for authorized signatories as an upcoming enhancement when an ASP obtains OTP consent for API access to taxpayer data. That update does not establish current availability. Check a newer GSTN or portal notice before relying on the alerts.
The Bottom Line
Use gst.gov.in directly, keep your password, security answers and OTPs private, and follow the current portal’s login and recovery instructions. If someone else may know your password, change it promptly; if you suspect unauthorized account activity or data leakage, inform the GST Helpdesk immediately. Treat the IRIS IRP and any planned ASP-consent notifications as separate matters, and do not assume they change the general GST Portal’s rules or reverse a filing.
