Protect a crypto exchange account in layers: secure the email account used for recovery, use a unique exchange password, enable phishing-resistant passkey sign-in where available, and restrict withdrawals to verified addresses. Add separate protections for withdrawals and security-setting changes if your exchange offers them. No single setting can protect a compromised device, recovery account, or approved destination.
Secure the accounts that can recover your exchange login
Start with the email account tied to your exchange profile. An attacker who can reset that mailbox may be able to interfere with exchange recovery even if your usual sign-in method is strong. Use a unique password for the email account, turn on its strongest supported authentication, and check that its recovery options are current and under your control.
Use a different, unique password for the exchange. A password manager can help generate and store unique passwords; Kraken recommends one in its account-security guidance. Do not reuse an email password on the exchange.
Choose a strong sign-in second factor
Passkeys
If your exchange supports passkeys for your account and devices, use one for sign-in. A passkey may be unlocked with a device biometric check or screen-lock PIN. Kraken explains that its passkeys are tied to the identity of the website or app, so they are used only for the site or app where they were created; this is why passkeys resist phishing. That is not a guarantee against a compromised device or a weak recovery route. See Kraken’s passkey explanation.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Register a second passkey or another safe recovery method if the exchange permits it. Kraken recommends having more than one passkey to reduce lockout risk and, where possible, keeping a Master Key passkey on a different device. These are Kraken’s recommendations; exact features and labels vary by exchange.
Authenticator apps and SMS
If passkeys are not supported, use the strongest available alternative. An authenticator app is generally preferable to SMS when the exchange supports both: authenticator codes can still be phished or shared with a scammer, while a phone-number takeover can expose SMS codes and may affect account recovery. Kraken advises against SMS when another method is available and warns that cloud-synced authenticator codes may be exposed if the linked Google, Apple, or Microsoft account is compromised. Protect any authenticator backup secret and the account used to sync it. See Kraken’s account-security guidance.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
A FIDO2 security key is an optional physical passkey method, not a required purchase. A phone, computer, browser, or password manager may already support passkeys, depending on your setup. Before buying a key, confirm that your exchange, operating system, browser, and the key’s protocol are compatible. Coinbase documents passkeys, authenticator apps, and security keys in its 2-step verification guide.
Protect withdrawals and security changes separately
“2FA enabled” does not necessarily mean every important action is covered. Sign-in verification, withdrawal confirmation, and extra confirmation for changing account settings can be separate controls. Turn on withdrawal or funding 2FA and step-up authentication for security changes where available.

Check what each control actually blocks. Kraken says its withdrawal 2FA requires a second factor for withdrawals but does not prevent adding cryptocurrency withdrawal addresses. Kraken points to Global Settings Lock for blocking such changes. In practical terms, confirmation before a withdrawal and a lock on changing destinations address different risks.
Enable a withdrawal-address allowlist
An allowlist restricts crypto withdrawals or sends to addresses saved in your account. It can make it harder for someone who gains account access to send funds to a new destination, but it does not protect an already approved address, your email account, or a compromised device. When adding an address, check the address, asset, and network carefully; if appropriate, make a small test transfer before sending a larger amount.

Activation and removal delays are product-specific. The following durations come from separate official exchange help pages, not a universal rule:
| Product | New-address timing | Turning off allowlisting |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase consumer | Address becomes available after 48 hours | Turning it off takes 48 hours; the page describes an exception if it is turned off within eight hours of activation |
| Coinbase International Exchange | 24-hour activation period for new addresses | 2FA is required to turn allowlisting on or off; a disablement delay is not stated on the cited page |
| Crypto.com Exchange | 24-hour withdrawal lock for newly whitelisted addresses | Not stated on the cited page |
These timings are described in the services’ respective help pages: Coinbase consumer allowlisting, Coinbase International Exchange allowlisting, and Crypto.com Exchange whitelisting. Confirm the current rules for your exchange, product, and region before relying on a delay.

Where your exchange offers the option, disable withdrawal routes for currencies you do not use. Bitfinex includes this among its account-security recommendations.

- Secure your recovery email: use a unique password, strong authentication, and recovery details you control.
- Make the exchange password unique: store it in a password manager if useful.
- Enable a passkey for sign-in: check your exchange’s current security settings for availability on your account and devices. Add a securely stored backup method.
- If passkeys are unavailable, choose another strong method: use an authenticator app rather than SMS where appropriate, and protect its recovery secret.
- Turn on separate withdrawal and settings protections: enable withdrawal 2FA, step-up confirmation, or a settings lock when offered.
- Enable the withdrawal allowlist: verify each destination, asset, and network; note the rules for new addresses and for disabling the feature.
- Review security activity: use the exchange’s official app or site to check recent activity and saved withdrawal addresses. Avoid unsolicited support links, and never share a password, authentication code, or recovery secret with someone claiming to help.
Exchange controls, names, and availability can differ by product, region, account type, and platform version. Check the current security settings and official help pages for your account.
