The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each ownership category. Extra checking accounts, savings accounts, certificates of deposit, or branches at the same bank do not create extra limits within one category.
Once you know the uninsured amount, you can reduce concentration by using separately chartered insured banks, evaluating a properly structured deposit-placement arrangement, or considering non-deposit investments for cash that does not need deposit insurance. Each choice affects liquidity, fees, operations, and risk.

What the FDIC limit actually protects
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s standard deposit insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category. Coverage is automatic for qualifying deposit accounts held at an FDIC-insured bank, but the limit is applied to the depositor and category—not to each account number.
Checking accounts, savings accounts, money-market deposit accounts, and certificates of deposit are deposit products. The FDIC describes coverage as dollar-for-dollar, including principal and accrued interest through the date of a bank failure, up to the applicable limit. Any amount above that limit may be an uninsured claim in a receivership.

For example, if one corporation has $180,000 in checking and $150,000 in a money-market deposit account at the same insured bank, the corporation has $330,000 in that ownership category at that bank. The $250,000 limit does not reset because the funds sit in two accounts, leaving $80,000 above the standard limit.
The same aggregation principle applies when balances are spread across branches, online portals, product names, or account numbers. Insurance follows the insured institution and legal ownership, not the way a bank’s website organizes the accounts. A business should therefore begin with a legal-entity and bank inventory rather than with a list of products marketed as “high yield” or “cash management.”
Start with legal ownership, not the account label
Coverage depends on the person or legal entity that owns the funds and the ownership category recorded for the account. An account titled “operating reserve” or “payroll savings” does not establish a separate category by itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSole proprietorships and DBAs
A sole proprietorship, including a business operating under a DBA, does not receive a separate business-organization category. Deposits owned by the sole proprietor are counted with the proprietor’s other qualifying deposits in the same category at that bank. A personal checking account and a DBA account at one bank therefore can consume the same $250,000 limit.
Corporations
A corporation can qualify for coverage as a separate entity when it is validly formed under applicable state law and is engaged in independent activity. The FDIC distinguishes a legitimate operating business from an entity created solely to obtain additional insurance. The account must actually be owned by the corporation; money held for the owner personally is not transformed into corporate money by changing the account title.
Partnerships and unincorporated associations
Qualifying partnerships and unincorporated associations may have their own business-category coverage when the applicable legal and activity requirements are satisfied. Confirm the entity’s formation, governing documents, and account ownership with the bank and your advisers before relying on a separate limit.
Funds held for someone else
When a business holds money in a fiduciary or custodial capacity, coverage can depend on the underlying beneficial owners and the records that identify their interests. This is not a bonus ownership category for the intermediary. The pass-through rules described below must be met, and the underlying owner’s deposits are aggregated at each receiving bank.
Ownership questions often arise after a merger, an acquisition, a new subsidiary, or a change in tax status. Do not assume that a newly registered name, a new employer-identification number, or separate bookkeeping automatically creates a new insured depositor. Match the account agreement to the entity that is legally entitled to the funds, and retain formation documents and resolutions supporting that conclusion.

Calculate your exposure at every bank
The practical first step is a bank-by-bank inventory. Use the legal name of the insured institution, not just the branch, app, or brand name shown to customers.
- List every bank relationship. Record the insured bank’s legal name, routing information, and the accounts used for operating cash, payroll, taxes, reserves, merchant settlement, and certificates of deposit.
- Identify the legal owner. For each account, record whether the owner is the sole proprietor, corporation, partnership, association, trust, or another party.
- Assign the ownership category. Do not assume that a different product type creates a new category. Ask the bank how the account is classified for deposit-insurance purposes.
- Aggregate balances at that bank. Add all deposits owned by the same depositor in the same category, including accounts at different branches and accrued interest.
- Separate banks only when they are separately chartered. A second branch or a related trade name may still be the same insured institution.
- Compare the total with $250,000. The excess is the amount exposed to the bank’s failure risk under that category.
Balances can change daily, so calculate using a conservative peak balance rather than only the amount present on a statement date. Payroll, tax payments, customer receipts, and seasonal inventory purchases can create short periods of much higher exposure.
A useful worksheet has one row per account and columns for legal owner, account type, insured-bank legal name, current balance, expected accrued interest, normal high balance, and planned destination of excess cash. Review both ordinary and stress periods: a large customer receipt that arrives before payroll, a tax reserve held until a due date, or a certificate that renews automatically can all change the total without a new account being opened.
Use the FDIC’s estimator as a check
The FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) can help test your assumptions. Treat its result as an analytical aid, not a substitute for the account agreement, ownership records, and the facts of your business. Keep a dated worksheet showing the balances, categories, and legal entities used in the calculation.
When a bank’s brand and charter are unclear, ask for the exact insured-bank name and confirm it against the institution’s official information. Record the answer with the date checked. This prevents a treasury team from counting two marketing brands as two banks when they are actually one charter.
Ways to reduce uninsured operating cash
| Approach | Insurance structure | Liquidity and operations | Costs and risks to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep all funds at one bank | All deposits in a category at that insured bank aggregate toward one $250,000 limit. | Simple access, reporting, and reconciliation. | Concentration leaves the excess exposed to one institution; convenience does not add insurance. |
| Use separately chartered insured banks | The limit applies separately at each insured bank, subject to the depositor and category rules at each institution. | Requires multiple logins, payment setups, reconciliations, approvals, and transfer procedures. | Compare account fees, transfer cutoffs, fraud controls, service quality, and confirmation of insured status. |
| Evaluate a deposit-placement or sweep arrangement | Potential pass-through coverage at receiving banks if disclosure, recordkeeping, and beneficial-ownership conditions are met; balances still aggregate at each receiving bank. | Can distribute funds without the business opening and managing every relationship directly, but availability and settlement timing depend on the arrangement. | Review receiving-bank lists, fees, record access, failure procedures, service interruptions, and the provider’s legal structure. |
| Use non-deposit investments for suitable cash | Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, money-market mutual funds, and Treasury securities are not FDIC-insured deposits. | Liquidity varies by instrument, maturity, market hours, and settlement cycle. | Consider market, maturity, reinvestment, custody, accounting, and principal-value risks. Treasury securities are backed by the U.S. government, not by FDIC deposit insurance. |
Distribute deposits among separately chartered banks
Moving part of the balance to another separately chartered FDIC-insured bank can provide another applicable $250,000 limit for the same ownership category at that institution. This works only when the receiving institution is genuinely separate for insurance purposes. Moving money from a main office to another branch of the same bank does not create another limit.
Distribution is most useful when the business can tolerate the operational work. Before opening another relationship, compare:
Recommended Free Tools
- ACH and wire cutoffs, incoming receipt timing, and withdrawal limits;
- online access, user permissions, dual approval, and positive-pay or other fraud controls;
- monthly account charges, transaction fees, wire costs, and minimum balances;
- statement formats and the effort required to reconcile multiple ledgers;
- backup access if one bank’s online system or payment rail is unavailable; and
- the bank’s actual FDIC-insured status and legal charter.
Keep enough immediately available at the bank that handles payroll and critical payments. A mathematically efficient distribution can still be a poor treasury decision if a transfer delay causes a missed payroll or supplier deadline.

Set an allocation rule rather than moving money ad hoc. For example, the operating bank can retain the forecast amount needed for the next payment cycle, while excess reserves are transferred after an approval review. Document who may initiate and approve the transfer, what happens when a balance approaches the internal ceiling, and how the team confirms receipt at the destination bank.
Use a deposit-placement or sweep arrangement only after due diligence
A third party may place a customer’s funds across multiple FDIC-insured banks. The FDIC calls this a pass-through arrangement. The money is treated as belonging to the underlying owner only when the fiduciary relationship is disclosed in the bank’s records, the beneficial owners and their interests can be identified from permitted records, and the principals actually own the funds.
Pass-through treatment does not create unlimited insurance. The underlying owner’s deposits are still aggregated with that owner’s other deposits in the same category at each receiving bank. If the business already has $200,000 in the relevant category at one receiving bank and the arrangement places another $100,000 there, only the applicable $250,000 is within the standard limit.
Before signing, obtain written answers to these questions:
- Which insured banks can receive the funds, and how often is the list updated?
- How are accounts titled, and what legal entity is the depositor of record?
- What records identify the business as beneficial owner, and can the records be produced promptly to a bank or receiver?
- How does the service detect deposits the business already holds at a receiving bank?
- When do funds move, when do they become available, and what are the cutoff times?
- What placement, account, transaction, or termination fees apply?
- What happens to access and instructions during a bank failure, provider outage, or reconciliation error?
- How are statements, tax forms, interest postings, and exception reports delivered?
Also test the arrangement with a small transfer before routing critical payroll or tax cash through it. Reconcile the provider’s report to the bank statements, verify that interest and fees are posted as expected, and establish a manual backup for time-sensitive payments. These controls do not create insurance, but they help reveal recordkeeping or access problems before a disruption.
Do not rely solely on advertising language such as “extended FDIC coverage.” The legal structure and records determine whether pass-through conditions are met.
Decide whether every dollar belongs in a deposit
Deposit insurance is only one part of a cash policy. Money needed for near-term payroll, taxes, debt service, and vendor payments generally requires dependable access and stable principal. Longer-dated reserves may be evaluated differently.

Deposits and CDs
A certificate of deposit remains a deposit product when held at an FDIC-insured bank. Its balance, including accrued interest, is aggregated with the business’s other deposits in the same ownership category at that bank. A CD can therefore increase uninsured exposure even though it is separate from checking. Also review maturity dates, early-withdrawal penalties, and renewal instructions before using CDs for operating liquidity.

Maintain a maturity calendar for every CD. A renewal can move the balance into a new term when the treasury team is not expecting it, and a penalty or settlement delay may make a supposedly liquid reserve unavailable when a payment is due. Compare the insurance result and access terms at the actual bank holding the CD, not merely the broker or platform name.
Treasury securities
Treasury bills, notes, and bonds are not FDIC-insured deposits. The FDIC describes them as backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. Their value and liquidity depend on the security, maturity, market conditions, custody arrangement, and transaction timing. Do not include Treasury holdings when calculating FDIC deposit coverage, and do not describe them as FDIC-insured.
Money-market mutual funds and other investments
Money-market mutual funds, stocks, and corporate or municipal bonds are investments rather than FDIC-insured deposits. They can introduce market-value, credit, maturity, settlement, and custody risks that do not apply in the same way to a bank deposit. Compare the protection actually attached to the instrument with the business’s cash horizon and tolerance for fluctuations.

- Set a cash forecast. Project daily and weekly inflows and outflows, including payroll, taxes, debt payments, capital purchases, and seasonal peaks.
- Define liquidity tiers. Separate immediate operating cash, a near-term reserve, and funds that can remain invested until a stated date.
- Maintain an ownership map. Keep formation documents, tax classifications, account titles, authorized signers, and beneficial-owner information together.
- Run the bank-level aggregation. At least monthly—and whenever a large receipt or payment occurs—total deposits by legal owner, category, and insured bank.
- Set internal thresholds. Create an alert below the limit so accrued interest and delayed payments do not push a balance over the target unexpectedly.
- Document transfer rules. Define who can move money, required approvals, payment cutoffs, backup methods, and how emergency liquidity is accessed.
- Recheck providers and banks. Review insured status, legal names, fees, service terms, and any changes to a placement arrangement at least annually.
- Retain evidence. Save statements, account agreements, bank confirmations, placement reports, and the calculation supporting each allocation.
Assign a named owner for the process and a backup reviewer. A monthly checklist should show the date of the calculation, balances used, expected interest, transfers pending, and exceptions requiring management action. Reperform the review after a legal-entity change, bank merger, new sweep provider, or material change in payment volume.
Common mistakes that leave cash exposed
- Opening more accounts at the same bank. Account count does not multiply the limit within one ownership category.
- Confusing a brand with a bank. A familiar name, app, or branch network may represent one insured charter or a different legal institution than expected. Confirm the insured bank.
- Treating a DBA as a separate entity. A sole proprietorship’s business deposits generally aggregate with the proprietor’s other deposits at that bank.
- Assuming a sweep is automatically insured. Pass-through coverage depends on disclosure, recordkeeping, and actual beneficial ownership.
- Ignoring accrued interest. Interest can move a balance over the limit even when principal appears below it.
- Counting securities as insured deposits. Treasury securities and mutual funds have different protections and risks.
- Optimizing insurance while neglecting access. A distribution that complicates payroll, approvals, or fraud monitoring can create an operational risk greater than the benefit.
- Relying on a one-time calculation. Coverage changes as balances, entities, account titles, and receiving banks change.
When to obtain professional confirmation
Ask the bank’s deposit-insurance specialists and a qualified attorney or accountant to review unusual ownership structures, fiduciary accounts, mergers, subsidiaries, joint ventures, and funds held for customers or employees. The FDIC rules are fact-specific, and a worksheet cannot resolve whether an entity is validly formed, independently active, or the true owner of the money.
Keep the review tied to the exact account agreements and current bank charters. A general explanation cannot guarantee coverage for a particular account, provider, or failure scenario.

Does opening another account at the same bank increase FDIC coverage?
No. Checking, savings, money-market deposit accounts, CDs, and accounts at different branches are aggregated when the same depositor owns them in the same category.
Does a DBA get its own FDIC limit?
A sole proprietorship or DBA does not receive a separate business-organization category. Its deposits are generally counted with the proprietor’s other deposits in the same category at that bank.
Can two banks provide two $250,000 limits?
Deposits at separately chartered FDIC-insured banks are evaluated separately, subject to the depositor and ownership-category rules at each institution. Confirm that the institutions are genuinely separate insured banks.

Are sweep accounts FDIC insured?
A sweep or deposit-placement service may support pass-through coverage when fiduciary disclosure, beneficial-owner records, and actual ownership requirements are met. Coverage still aggregates at each receiving bank and is not automatic because of the product name.
Are CDs and money-market accounts covered?
A CD and a money-market deposit account are deposit products at an FDIC-insured bank and count toward the applicable limit. A money-market mutual fund is an investment, not an FDIC-insured deposit.
Are Treasury bills protected by FDIC insurance?
No. Treasury bills, notes, and bonds are not FDIC-insured deposits. The FDIC describes Treasury securities as backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, with different market, maturity, custody, and liquidity considerations.
How often should a business recalculate its exposure?
At least monthly and whenever a large receipt, payment, account change, entity change, bank change, or placement arrangement change occurs. Use peak projected balances and include accrued interest.
