A hardware wallet can keep Bitcoin signing keys away from an internet-connected computer, but it does not protect funds by itself. Set it up securely, keep its recovery backup private and offline, and verify every transaction on the device before approving it. Your recovery phrase can give someone control of the wallet, so never disclose it—even to someone claiming to be support.
What a hardware wallet protects—and what it does not
A hardware wallet is a dedicated device used to hold signing keys and approve transactions. It can reduce exposure to malware on an everyday computer or phone, but it cannot secure a recovery phrase that has been copied, photographed, or shared. You remain responsible for the backup, device and companion-software updates, and checking transaction details before signing.

Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as “the best balance between very high security and ease of use.” That is Bitcoin.org’s characterization, not the result of a comparative test. Its broader guidance also discusses offline storage, secure backups, and multisignature as possible protections. Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance
Set up the device safely
- Buy through a trusted channel. Order from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Bitcoin.org warns that counterfeit devices from third-party marketplaces may have a seed phrase already known to an attacker or altered firmware. Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance
- Inspect the packaging. Check its integrity when it arrives and follow the manufacturer’s official setup instructions. Do not use a device if its packaging or setup prompts seem suspicious; contact the manufacturer through its official support channel.
- Create the recovery phrase yourself. Generate it during first-time setup on the device, as Bitcoin.org recommends. Do not accept a phrase supplied by a seller, another person, or a support agent.
- Complete the wallet’s backup procedure. Backup behavior varies. Some wallets may require more than backing up keys currently visible, so follow the instructions for the specific wallet and confirm what the backup restores. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ
- Update wallet software as directed. Keep the device firmware and related wallet software current using the manufacturer’s official instructions. Updates can provide security and stability fixes.
Protect the recovery phrase
Anyone who obtains your recovery phrase may be able to access the associated wallet. Treat it like the keys to the funds: keep it private and securely offline, and store it in a durable form and secure location. Do not photograph it, save it in a cloud account, send it in a message, or enter it in response to an unsolicited request. No legitimate support person or business needs your phrase or private key to help with a problem.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
For BIP39 wallets, the mnemonic may contain 12, 15, 18, 21, or 24 words, corresponding respectively to 128, 160, 192, 224, or 256 bits of entropy, according to Bitcoin.org Developer Documentation. The wallet’s own instructions determine the backup method and recovery process; do not assume every wallet uses the same procedure.
Understand the passphrase trade-off
Some wallets support an optional passphrase in addition to the mnemonic. It changes the derived seed, so a forgotten or incorrectly entered passphrase can prevent recovery. Bitcoin.org’s developer guide notes there is no fundamental way to prove that the intended passphrase was entered. Use this feature only by following the chosen wallet’s official guidance, and maintain a recovery plan for both the mnemonic and passphrase.

Verify addresses and transactions before signing
Before sending Bitcoin, check the complete receiving address and review the transaction details on the hardware wallet’s screen. Do not rely only on an address shown on a computer or phone: malware can substitute an address. Confirm the destination and amount on the device before approving. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, so a mistaken or fraudulent transfer cannot simply be undone. Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance

Choose a wallet that fits your needs
Compare devices by how they fit your security and recovery needs—not by a claim that one is universally “most secure.” Consider these practical factors:

Bitcoin.org’s BitBox02 listing is one example, not an endorsement or hands-on review. It describes an OLED display, touch sensors, USB connectivity, a companion app, and offline backup options using microSD and a BIP39 mnemonic. Device features and availability can change; consult current manufacturer documentation before choosing a model.

For everyday spending, keep only a small amount on an internet-connected device and store longer-term savings in a safer environment. For larger or more complex holdings, multisignature can require multiple independent approvals, but it also makes setup and recovery more complex. Understand how all signers and backups work together before relying on it; a poorly planned recovery process can put access at risk. Bitcoin.org discusses multisignature alongside other wallet protections in its security guidance.
