Back up the wallet using an option it supports, keep recovery credentials private and accessible only to you, enable available security settings, and verify every token network and transaction before approving it. A recovery phrase is not a password support can reset: anyone who obtains it may be able to access the wallet.
Understand what a wallet backup protects
A recovery phrase is critical access material for many self-custody wallets. Tether says it cannot look up or reset a lost phrase; without the phrase or another usable backup, access may be unrecoverable. Ethereum.org warns that anyone who gets the phrase can access the wallet’s accounts and assets. Treat it like a master key, not like a routine account password.
A backup is useful only if you can retrieve it when your phone or computer is unavailable. Before choosing a method, identify what the wallet requires for restoration: a phrase, a cloud account, a backup password, or some combination. Those requirements differ by wallet, so use that wallet’s official instructions rather than assuming every app works the same way.
Choose a backup method you can recover from
Tether Wallet and Coinbase Wallet document both encrypted cloud backup and manual recovery-phrase backup. Their documented flows are product-specific, not universal wallet features.

| Method | What recovery depends on | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Encrypted cloud backup | The wallet’s documented cloud account and any required backup password or encryption details. Tether Wallet describes encrypted wallet data and a separate encryption key in the user’s cloud account, reunited on the device during recovery. Coinbase Wallet says its cloud backup requires a password. | Convenient if you retain access to the relevant cloud account and credentials; losing an account or required password may prevent recovery. The backup is stored digitally, so secure the cloud account and its authentication. |
| Manual recovery phrase | The phrase entered according to the wallet’s recovery instructions. | You control where the phrase is kept, but losing it can mean losing access, and anyone who finds or copies it may be able to access the wallet. |
Decide by considering who could access the recovery material, which accounts or credentials restoration depends on, and what happens if a device, cloud account, password, or physical copy is lost. The SEC’s investor guidance similarly frames custody as a balance between security and convenience: Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors.
For Tether Wallet’s specific setup, consult its official FAQ and backup guidance. Coinbase Wallet’s recovery-phrase guidance explains its options and the need to retain the cloud backup password.

Store recovery material so thieves cannot use it
- Never share your recovery phrase or enter it on a website. A request to reveal it is not a normal step for receiving support.
- Avoid screenshots or unprotected digital copies. Ethereum.org warns that screenshots may sync to cloud storage, creating another place where the phrase could be exposed.
- If you keep a phrase offline, protect the physical copy from both theft and damage. Tether mentions a metal backup plate as an option for physical storage; it still contains sensitive access material and must be stored securely.
- Keep any cloud-backup password or encryption details private and recoverable. Do not store them in a way that gives an unauthorized person access to both the backup and the information needed to unlock it.
Tether Wallet states: “For your security, our team will never ask for your recovery phrase or your cloud backup encryption details.” See its official help guidance if a message claiming to be support asks for either.
Confirm the backup and recovery path
- Open the wallet’s official backup or security settings and follow its instructions for the chosen method. Menu names and steps vary between apps.
- Check the app’s backup status, if available. Tether says users can check backup status or rerun its process; do not assume a setup screen means a backup completed.
- Make sure you know which cloud account, password, or phrase is required to restore this particular wallet. Secure the account and credentials that recovery depends on.
- Keep the wallet’s official recovery instructions available through a trusted source, without putting the recovery phrase itself into a website, message, or support chat.
Do not experiment with recovery by entering a phrase into an unfamiliar app or website. Use the wallet’s own documented process and verify that you have the correct wallet before proceeding.

Turn on available wallet security settings
Review the wallet’s security menu and enable the authentication options it offers, such as biometric authentication where available. Tether’s wallet guidance describes biometrics as an option. These settings can help protect access on a device, but they do not replace a recovery backup: if you lose access to the device, you may still need the wallet’s recovery method.
Keep your device and wallet access protected, and be skeptical of unexpected links, tokens, support messages, and connection prompts. Phishing can target recovery credentials, while a wallet connection can present a separate risk: a malicious contract approval may give permission to move tokens.

Review wallet connections and signing requests
Read each signing request and approval before confirming it. Tether warns that connecting to and approving a malicious contract may permit it to move tokens. If you do not understand what a request authorizes, decline it rather than signing first and investigating later. Avoid links or prompts that arrive unexpectedly, even if they appear to come from a token project or support account.
A hardware wallet can keep private keys offline, reducing exposure to a compromised internet-connected computer. It does not prevent phishing, make a malicious approval safe, or protect a recovery phrase that has been exposed. Ethereum.org explains hardware wallets and other security practices in its security and scam-prevention guidance.

Check the network and destination before sending stablecoins
A stablecoin may be available on more than one blockchain network. Before confirming a transfer, check that the selected network is compatible with both the token and the recipient’s wallet or deposit instructions, then verify the destination address and amount. Sending on an unsupported or mismatched network can create problems that the recipient may not be able to resolve.
Tether Wallet says its app presents compatible available networks for its transfers. If you use another wallet, check its selected network yourself and confirm the recipient accepts that network. Tether’s official FAQ covers its network guidance and warns users not to share recovery material with purported support.
Quick Recap
A practical security check before you finish
- You know whether your wallet uses a cloud backup, a manual phrase, or another documented method.
- You know exactly which account, password, phrase, or device recovery depends on.
- Your backup is complete, and the recovery material is not exposed in screenshots, websites, chats, or unsecured storage.
- Available device or wallet authentication is enabled, without treating it as a substitute for backup.
- You understand the wallet connections and approvals you sign, and you verify the token network and recipient before sending.
