Promote a website by helping the right people find it through useful content, search discovery, relevant communities, email, referrals, advertising and offline touchpoints. No channel guarantees a traffic increase or a top search position. Choose tactics based on whether you need awareness, leads, sales or a stronger audience relationship, then measure the results.
Start with a discoverable, useful website
Promotion works best when the destination is worth visiting. Google groups its Search guidance into technical requirements, spam policies and key best practices. It recommends creating helpful, reliable, people-first content, using the words readers are likely to search for in prominent places such as page titles and main headings, and making links crawlable. Meeting those recommendations does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index or serve a page. Google Search Essentials
1. Make each page answer a real audience need
Publish material that is useful, original, readable and organized. A clear guide, service explanation, comparison or answer to a recurring customer question gives visitors a reason to stay and gives others something relevant to share. Update material when its facts or usefulness change. Avoid producing thin or copied pages simply to target search terms; Google’s SEO Starter Guide favors useful, compelling content over that approach.
2. Make important pages easy to find and understand
Give each page a descriptive title and a main heading that reflect what it actually offers. Use the language your intended visitors use, without awkward repetition. Link related pages with normal crawlable links so both people and crawlers can follow the site structure.

3. Check search discovery before assuming a page is invisible
Google usually discovers pages automatically, primarily through links from pages it has already crawled. Search for site:yourdomain.com to see whether pages from your domain appear, and use Search Console to inspect individual URLs and identify possible technical problems. Google also offers a way to submit a sitemap, but a sitemap is optional rather than a requirement. See its guidance on getting information on Google.
Choose promotion channels that fit your goal
Google’s traffic guidance groups promotion into paid, owned and earned channels. One campaign can involve more than one—for example, a paid social post may also prompt people to share a useful page organically. Before choosing a channel, state the outcome you want and decide how you will recognize progress. Google AdSense’s guide to growing website traffic recommends goal-led promotion and using analytics to track impact.
| Channel type | What it means | Examples | Useful question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid | You pay to reach an audience. | Advertising on another platform or website. | Does this audience and campaign objective justify the budget? |
| Owned | You control the channel and its audience relationship. | An email list of people who opted in. | Can you reach people who have a reason to hear from you again? |
| Earned | Other people or sites choose to mention or link to you. | A relevant link or mention from another website. | Is the attention likely to come from people interested in your work? |
These categories describe how attention is obtained, not how well a tactic performs. The cited guidance does not establish comparative returns or benchmarks. Assess options by audience fit, cost and time, ability to measure visits or outcomes, and whether the goal is awareness, community growth, leads or sales.

4. Share new material where your audience already spends time
Promote a page through relevant social accounts instead of posting indiscriminately. Explain what a reader will get from the link, adapt the message to the platform and join conversations where the page genuinely helps. Social media promotion and community engagement are among the methods listed in Google’s SEO Starter Guide.

Answer questions and contribute useful information in appropriate forums, professional groups or local communities. Link to your site when it directly adds context or solves the question, and follow each community’s rules. Repeated, irrelevant links can frustrate people rather than build trust.

6. Build an opt-in newsletter
An email list is an owned channel: it lets you reach subscribers who agreed to receive messages. Send useful updates, new material or offers that match the reason people signed up. Keep the cadence and content valuable; a list is not permission to overwhelm subscribers with repeated promotions. Google names recurring newsletters sent with permission as one way to promote a site.
7. Earn relevant mentions and referrals
Make it easy for satisfied customers, collaborators and other publishers to refer people to your work by providing a page that is genuinely useful to their audience. A relevant mention can introduce new visitors and may help Google discover pages through links. Seek accurate, editorially appropriate recommendations rather than buying or manufacturing links: Google’s spam policies warn that manipulative practices can lower rankings or remove pages from Search.
Rank #4
8. Use paid advertising when the objective and budget are clear
Advertising can put a page in front of a selected audience, but it costs money and does not guarantee leads or sales. Decide what action matters before spending—such as a qualified inquiry or purchase—and assess the campaign against that outcome, not just visits. Google states that buying Google ads does not affect a site’s organic Search presence or ranking; ads and organic visibility are separate.

If customers interact with your business in person, include its web address on relevant materials such as business cards, letterhead or posters. Offline promotion makes sense when those materials reach the same people the site serves; it is an option, not a requirement for every website.

10. Encourage word of mouth with a page worth recommending
Word of mouth is more likely when a visitor can quickly explain what your site offers and why another person should visit. Make your core value and next step clear, and give existing customers a helpful page they can share. Google’s starter guide lists word of mouth among possible promotion methods, not as a guaranteed growth mechanism.

11. Set a measurable objective for each channel
Use site analytics to assess whether a channel is contributing to the intended result. Depending on the goal, look beyond total visits to relevant actions such as a completed inquiry or purchase. Keep the measurement tied to the campaign and the objective you chose; a traffic increase alone does not show whether the visitors were useful to the business.
12. Compare channels by fit, not by assumed return
For each option, record who it can reach, whether it is paid, owned or earned, how much time and budget it needs, and what visit or business outcome you can measure. Then choose a small set of suitable channels and compare their actual results. Google’s guidance supports goal-first selection and analytics, but does not supply universal ROI figures that would make one channel best for every site.
13. Assess SEO changes on a realistic timeline
Google says changes may take from a few hours to several months to appear in Search and suggests waiting a few weeks before assessing whether an SEO change helped. Not every change will produce a noticeable effect. Record what you changed and when, then review relevant search and site measures; do not treat a short-term fluctuation or a waiting period as proof of a future ranking gain. Google SEO Starter Guide
What to avoid when promoting a website
- Spam and manipulative tactics: Google’s Search Essentials warns that spam practices can lead to lower rankings or exclusion from results.
- Promotion without audience fit: Repeated messages in irrelevant places can tire audiences and undermine trust.
- Promises of guaranteed rankings: Google does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving even when a site follows its guidance.
- Unsolicited SEO pitches: Google advises site owners to learn the fundamentals and be cautious about unsolicited offers.
When to consider an SEO professional
An SEO professional may help with content or site-structure reviews, technical advice, content development, keyword research, training or market expertise. Hiring may save time and could improve visibility, but poor work can harm a site’s standing or reputation. Learn the basics first, check the proposed work carefully and be wary of unsolicited pitches. Google’s guidance on whether you need an SEO also clarifies that buying Google ads does not change organic rankings.
