In poker, you win the pot either by showing the best hand at showdown or by getting every opponent to fold. Poker includes many variants, so this guide uses Texas Hold’em to explain the basic rules: each player gets two private cards, shares five community cards, and tries to make the best five-card hand.
What you need to play Texas Hold’em
Hold’em uses a standard 52-card deck and is commonly played by two to ten people at a table. Each player receives two private cards, called hole cards. Five community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table for everyone to use. Your best hand is the strongest five-card combination you can make from any of your two hole cards and the five community cards; you may use both, one, or neither of your hole cards.
A standard deck is enough for practice. Chips represent bets and help track the pot in a home game, but they do not teach strategy by themselves.
How a Hold’em hand begins: the button and blinds
A marker called the dealer button identifies the nominal dealer position and moves one seat clockwise after each hand. Before the cards are dealt, the player immediately to the button’s left posts the small blind, and the next player posts the big blind. These are forced bets that seed the pot. The button’s position determines who posts the blinds and the order in which players act.

How betting and community cards work
A hand can have up to four betting rounds. Players act in turn, and the community cards arrive in stages:
- Pre-flop: Each player receives two hole cards. The first betting round takes place before any community cards are dealt.
- Flop: Three community cards are dealt face up, followed by a betting round.
- Turn: A fourth community card is dealt, followed by another betting round.
- River: The fifth and final community card is dealt, followed by the last betting round.
Not every hand reaches all four rounds. If all but one player folds, the hand ends immediately.

The basic actions
- Check: Pass without betting when no bet is facing you. If another player has bet, you cannot check.
- Bet: Put chips into the pot when no bet has yet been made in that betting round.
- Call: Match the current bet to stay in the hand.
- Raise: Increase the current bet. Other players must fold, call the increased amount, or raise again to continue.
- Fold: Give up your hand and stop competing for the pot.
Betting limits change how much you can wager
The betting format determines the permitted bet size. In no-limit Hold’em, a player may bet up to the chips they have in front of them. In pot-limit play, a bet is capped by the current pot size. Fixed-limit games use set betting amounts. Check the table’s format and rules before joining; the actions are familiar, but the limits are not interchangeable.
How a hand is won
There are two ways to win a Hold’em pot. If every other player folds, the last player still in the hand wins without showing their cards. If at least two players remain after the river betting round, they reveal their cards at showdown, and the best-ranked five-card hand wins. PokerStars’ poker rules guide describes these as winning by holding the highest-ranked hand at showdown or making the last uncalled bet.

Traditional poker hand rankings
For traditional high-hand poker, the following rankings run from strongest to weakest. A hand is evaluated using its best five cards:
- Royal flush: A, K, Q, J and 10, all of the same suit.
- Straight flush: Five consecutive ranks of the same suit, other than a royal flush.
- Four of a kind: Four cards of the same rank.
- Full house: Three cards of one rank and a pair of another rank.
- Flush: Five cards of the same suit, not in consecutive rank order.
- Straight: Five consecutive ranks in more than one suit.
- Three of a kind: Three cards of the same rank.
- Two pair: Two cards of one rank and two cards of another rank.
- One pair: Two cards of the same rank.
- High card: None of the combinations above; the highest card determines the hand’s rank.
This traditional high-hand order is used in widely played games such as Hold’em and Omaha, but it is not universal. Lowball games, for example, use a different ranking objective. Learn the rules for the specific variant before playing.

How poker variants differ
“Poker” refers to a family of games, not a single ruleset. When choosing a game, check three things: how betting is limited, whether players share community cards, and whether the winning hand is judged high or low. Hold’em is a community-card game with a traditional high-hand objective; other variants can differ on one or more of those points. The PokerStars rules guide and PokerNews poker rules overview provide variant-specific rules and rankings.
