You choose whether to take another card or stop; the dealer follows fixed rules set by the table. Card values are straightforward, but payouts and options such as splitting or surrender can vary, so check the posted rules before you play.
How blackjack hands are scored
Number cards count as their face value. Jacks, queens, and kings count as 10. An ace counts as either 1 or 11, using whichever value helps the hand without causing it to exceed 21. Suits do not change ordinary hand values in the cited online-game rules.
A hand totaling more than 21 is a bust. A two-card hand containing an ace and a 10-value card is a natural blackjack. A natural is distinct from making 21 with three or more cards; the payout for a natural depends on the table’s rules.
How a typical round works
- Place your wager. You put your bet down before the cards are dealt.
- Receive the opening cards. In the cited digital game, you receive two face-up cards while the dealer gets one face-up card and one face-down card. Physical dealing procedures can vary by jurisdiction and table.
- Choose how to play your hand. You may hit, stand, or—if permitted and eligible—double down or split. You act before the dealer reveals the face-down card and completes the dealer hand.
- Dealer completes the hand. The dealer reveals the hidden card and draws or stands according to the game’s fixed rules, not personal discretion.
- Settle the round. If you bust, you lose. If the dealer busts while your hand has not, you win. Otherwise, the higher total that does not exceed 21 wins; equal totals are a tie, commonly called a push.
What each player decision means
Hit
Take another card. You can usually hit again if you still have not busted and have not chosen to stand, subject to the game’s rules.

Stand
Take no more cards. Your hand is finished for the round, and the dealer plays after the players have acted.
Double down
Add to your wager under the table’s rules and take exactly one additional card, then stop. Pennsylvania’s published procedure, for example, limits a doubled hand to one additional card. Whether you can double, and under which conditions, depends on the game.

Split
If your opening cards form an eligible pair, you may be allowed to make an additional wager and play the cards as two separate hands. Eligibility, the number of times you may split, and rules for split aces vary. In British Columbia Lottery Corporation’s double-deck game, re-splitting is allowed up to four hands, doubling after a split is permitted, and split aces receive only one additional card each.
Surrender and insurance
These options are not available at every table. Colorado’s regulation effective April 14, 2025, describes late surrender and insurance, and distinguishes surrender on the first two cards from a rescue option after doubling. By contrast, BCLC’s cited double-deck rules do not offer surrender. Check the rules screen or table sign rather than assuming an option is available.

How the dealer’s turn works
Dealer drawing rules are set by the game. PokerStars says the dealer hits on hard or soft totals of 16 or less, and notes that whether the dealer draws on a soft 17 varies. Pennsylvania’s published regulation describes the dealer drawing until a hard or soft 17 or higher, subject to specified exceptions. The table’s posted rule is the one that applies to your game.
How wins, pushes, and payouts are settled
A busted player hand loses. If the dealer busts, any player hand that has not busted wins. When neither side busts, the higher total wins and an equal total pushes, so neither side wins the hand. A natural blackjack can pay differently from an ordinary winning hand.

For a specific example, BCLC’s double-deck rules pay a winning natural blackjack 3:2 and ordinary winning hands 1:1. Those are rules for that game, not universal blackjack payouts.

- Whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17.
- How many decks are used.
- Whether surrender and insurance are offered.
- Which pairs may be split and how many re-splits are allowed.
- Whether doubling after a split is permitted.
The cited official and operator rules show that these details differ, but they do not establish one universally best table. A standard deck of playing cards is enough to practice hand values and sample rounds at home; no special deck is required.
