In blackjack, try to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over 21 yourself. Number cards count at face value, face cards count as 10, and an ace can count as 1 or 11. You receive cards, choose whether to take another card or keep your total, and then the dealer plays according to the rules posted at that table.

How do you play blackjack?

Blackjack is a contest between each player and the dealer, not a contest among players. Your aim is to have a hand total higher than the dealer’s without exceeding 21. If your total goes over 21, you bust and lose that hand.

A basic round begins with two cards for each player and two for the dealer. After seeing your cards, you decide whether to take another card or stop. Once players have finished, the dealer plays under the table’s rules. Casinos BC’s beginner guide describes this sequence and the basic objective; the exact procedures can differ by venue and game variant.

How much is each card worth?

  • Number cards (2 through 10): Count at their printed value.
  • Face cards (jack, queen and king): Count as 10.
  • Ace: Counts as 1 or 11, whichever value benefits the hand without making it exceed 21.

For example, an ace and a 7 can total 8 or 18. If you take a card that would make the hand exceed 21 when the ace counts as 11, the ace can count as 1 instead.

What does “hit” or “stand” mean?

  • Hit: Ask for another card. Your total changes according to that card’s value, and you may need to decide again whether to hit or stand.
  • Stand: Take no more cards and keep your current total for the round.

Choose based on your hand and the table’s rules. A hit can improve a low total, but it can also make you bust. A stand avoids taking that risk, though it leaves your current total unchanged.

What happens when you bust?

A hand busts as soon as its total is more than 21. A player who busts loses the hand, regardless of whether the dealer later busts. If you stay at or below 21, the dealer’s final hand determines whether you win, lose or tie under the table’s rules.

What does the dealer do?

After players have completed their decisions, the dealer takes a turn. The dealer’s required actions are set by the rules of the game; do not assume every table follows the same stopping rule. For a specific casino, read its posted rules or official game information before playing.

Which blackjack rules can vary?

Blackjack rules are not identical everywhere. Jurisdictional regulations and casino game variants can specify different setups and procedures, so a description of one table should not be treated as a universal rule.

How can you practise at home?

A standard deck of playing cards is enough to practise card values, keeping a running hand total, and deciding when to hit or stand. Home practice can teach the basic sequence, but it does not reproduce every casino setup: rules and the number of decks can vary.
