1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare at least three cards’ annual fees, APRs, other fees, and grace-period terms before applying. Choose a card whose bill you can manage, pay at least the minimum by its due date, and—when the card offers a purchase grace period—pay the statement balance in full to avoid interest on new purchases. You do not need to carry debt to build a good credit score.
What to compare before you apply
A credit card is borrowed money: you make purchases now and repay them later, potentially with interest. The card agreement and required disclosures set out the APR, fees, and other conditions. Consumer.gov recommends comparing at least three cards; the FTC likewise advises reviewing costs, terms, and protections before choosing one.
| Card type | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Unsecured credit card | A credit account that does not require a cash security deposit. | Eligibility, annual fee, APR, late and other fees, grace-period terms, and cardholder agreement. |
| Secured credit card | A credit account backed by a cash deposit; the deposit may be tied to the available limit. | Deposit amount, annual or maintenance fees, APR, whether the issuer reports account activity to credit bureaus, and the conditions for getting the deposit back. |
| Credit-builder loan | A loan product—not a credit card—that the CFPB identifies as another possible way to start or rebuild credit. | Ask a bank, credit union, or nonprofit counseling agency whether one is available and compare its terms. |
| Prepaid card | A payment card that uses money you deposit in advance; it is not a credit account. | Do not assume it builds credit or use it as a substitute for a secured credit card. |
For cards, compare the annual fee, APR, and other charges. APR is the standard measure for comparing borrowing costs, and a higher APR generally means higher interest costs if you carry a balance. If you expect to pay in full each month and the card has a purchase grace period, annual and other fees may be especially important. If you may carry a balance, the APR becomes a more significant cost. These are comparison principles, not a guarantee about which card will be cheapest for every spending pattern.
Check the current cardholder agreement and disclosures rather than relying on an advertisement or an old rate. Eligibility, rates, fees, rewards, and terms vary by issuer and can change.

When a secured card may make sense
If you cannot qualify for, or do not want, an unsecured card, a secured card may be an option. You provide a cash deposit, then use the account up to its limit and restore available spending as you pay the bill. The CFPB says secured cards may help establish or rebuild credit history when the issuer reports the account and other requirements are met.
The FTC notes that a secured-card deposit can be a percentage of the limit or as much as the full limit, and is usually returned when the account is paid off and closed. Confirm the issuer’s exact deposit-return conditions before applying. A deposit does not automatically make a card a good deal: secured cards may have higher APRs or fees than unsecured cards. Compare the full terms, and verify that the issuer reports to the credit bureaus if building credit is your reason for choosing it.

How to use your card without avoidable costs
Pay by the due date
Pay at least the required minimum by the due date every month. Missing the minimum can lead to interest, fees, a higher rate, and harm to your credit history. Set a reminder or arrange automatic payment for at least the minimum if that fits your budget; keep track of the payment and available funds so an automatic debit does not create another problem.

Pay the statement balance in full when the grace period applies
A grace period is the time between the end of a billing cycle and the payment due date. Issuers are not required to provide one, although most cards provide a grace period for purchases. If your card offers one and you are not carrying a balance, paying the full statement balance by the due date can avoid interest on new purchases. Check your card’s agreement for the exact rules. Cash advances generally start accruing interest on the transaction date, so do not assume they receive the same treatment as purchases.
Keep spending and balances manageable
Track purchases during the month, not just when the bill arrives. Keep the balance low relative to your total credit limit. The CFPB says experts advise using no more than 30% of total available credit; treat that as a guideline, not a universal requirement or a promised score outcome for every credit-scoring model.

Do not borrow just to build a score
You do not need to carry an unpaid balance to earn a good credit score. The CFPB says paying in full can support strong scores while avoiding interest costs. Apply only for credit you need, and check your credit reports for errors you suspect may be affecting your record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A simple first-card decision
- Decide what you can manage. Consider whether you can reliably pay the monthly bill and whether a cash deposit is feasible.
- Compare at least three cards. Review annual fees, APRs, other fees, grace-period rules, and the agreement’s terms.
- If considering a secured card, verify the details. Check the deposit, issuer credit-bureau reporting, fees, and how and when the deposit can be returned.
- Choose based on the full terms, not one feature. A low deposit or appealing offer does not by itself establish that a card is low-cost or suitable.
- After approval, make a payment routine. Track spending, pay at least the minimum on time, and pay the full statement balance when the purchase grace-period rules allow you to avoid interest.
This is general U.S.-oriented guidance, not a recommendation of a particular issuer or offer. The right choice depends on your eligibility, credit profile, finances, and the current terms available to you.
