You can start an NPS account through PhonePe or BHIM if NPS Tatkal appears in your app and your bank is supported. The reported flow is three steps: open the option, enter your details and select an eligible bank account, then make the initial contribution through UPI. Availability and the amount required can vary; verify both in the app before proceeding.
What is NPS Tatkal?
NPS Tatkal is a mobile-app route for enrolling in the National Pension System (NPS), reported as available through BHIM and PhonePe. PFRDA’s October 6, 2026 launch announcement described the service as a way to begin enrollment through the apps. It is still enrollment in a regulated, market-linked pension account—not a savings deposit or a promise of a particular return.

App visibility and participating-bank support matter. The available reports do not establish a definitive current list of eligible banks for PhonePe or BHIM, so check whether the option appears and whether your bank account is accepted before starting. Mint reports that successful verification and payment can result in a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN), the NPS account’s unique identification number; issuance is not guaranteed to be immediate in every case.

PFRDA’s current All Citizen Model information says an eligible individual must be an Indian citizen—resident or non-resident—or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), be aged 18 to 85, and meet KYC requirements. The account is individual: it cannot be opened on another person’s behalf. Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) are not eligible under this model. See PFRDA’s current registration information for the applicable requirements.

For resident individuals, PFRDA’s general enrollment information lists a recent photograph, PAN card and proof of address. NRI and OCI documentation differs, so use the current registration form rather than assuming the resident checklist applies to you.
How to open an NPS account through PhonePe or BHIM in three steps
- Find NPS Tatkal. Open PhonePe or BHIM and look for the NPS Tatkal option. If it is not visible, the route may not be available to you in that app at that time.
- Enter your details and select a bank account. Complete the requested information and choose a supported bank account. The reports do not provide a definitive current bank-eligibility list, so rely on what the app accepts.
- Make the initial contribution using UPI. Review the amount and any instructions displayed in the app, then authorize the payment. Keep the confirmation for your records and check for your PRAN and account details; successful payment does not establish that every application receives a PRAN instantly.
What is the minimum contribution for NPS Tatkal?
Recent reports give different figures, and the PFRDA Tatkal circulars cited here do not settle a universal app-specific minimum. Mint’s October 11, 2026 report says ₹250 is the minimum initial contribution for Tatkal. Financial Express reported on October 9, 2026 that the minimum is ₹500 for a new Tier I account and ₹250 for Tier II. These figures do not align, so check the amount shown in your app before authorizing payment; do not treat either report as a definitive rule for every app or account type.

Also distinguish the initial amount requested during enrollment from rules for later contributions. PFRDA’s separate 2024 fee schedule for contributions through Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) lists charges of ₹0.50 per lump-sum transaction and ₹0.50 per SIP transaction, plus applicable GST, and a one-time ₹4 SIP mandate registration charge, plus applicable GST. Those are BBPS channel charges—not Tatkal account-opening charges.

What to verify before contributing
- App and bank availability: Confirm NPS Tatkal is visible and the app accepts your bank account. Do not assume that support in one app means support in the other.
- Contribution amount: Check the amount displayed in your app and the account type it applies to. Published figures differ.
- KYC and personal details: Review your information before submitting it. PFRDA’s August 14, 2026 circular keeps onboarding and KYC with Bank-Points of Presence (Bank-PoPs).
- Nomination: Under that circular, nominee name and relationship may be left optional during onboarding; an application must not be rejected solely because nomination information is absent from a bank’s records. You must register a nomination later. Until you do, you cannot change your PoP, and the account is under debit freeze restricting withdrawals and exit. Contributions can still be received.
- Photograph provision and date: PFRDA’s July 23, 2026 amendment makes photograph capture optional through December 31, 2026, as a temporary implementation measure. Until a photo is added to CRA records, you cannot shift your PoP, and the account is under debit freeze restricting withdrawal and exit; contributions can continue. Check whether this temporary provision remains in effect when you enroll.
What happens after enrollment: Tier I, Tier II and returns
Tier I is the default individual NPS pension account. Withdrawals are governed by the applicable regulations, and the account may be eligible for tax benefits under the Income Tax Act. Tax treatment depends on current law and your circumstances; verify it before relying on a benefit.
Rank #3
Tier II is optional and requires an active Tier I account. It has fewer withdrawal restrictions and does not receive the same tax benefits. NPS returns are market-linked and depend on your investment choices; they are not guaranteed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you enroll through another channel?
Yes. PFRDA lists registered Points of Presence (PoPs), online or in person, and the NPS Trust eNPS platform as enrollment channels. These are alternatives if Tatkal is not shown in your app or your bank is not accepted. The detailed requirements and support experience for PhonePe and BHIM are not established in the sources cited here, so compare the current instructions on the route you choose.
