How to Open an Islamic Bank Account in Bangladesh

Choose the bank and account type first, then confirm eligibility, required documents, current charges and whether online e-KYC is available for your application.

To open an Islamic bank account in Bangladesh, choose a bank and account type, check the current eligibility and opening requirements, then apply through the bank’s available branch or digital process. Requirements vary by institution and product. As a concrete example, Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC (IBBPLC) lists identity documents, photographs and nominee information for its Mudaraba Savings Account; its online e-KYC route is limited to natural persons with a valid NID.

Choose an account that fits how you will use it

Islamic account names describe different arrangements and features; they are not interchangeable. At IBBPLC, a Mudaraba Savings Account is intended mainly for non-trading customers who want to save and make relatively few transactions. Its Al-Wadeah Current Account allows unlimited transactions and pays no profit, according to the bank’s Mudaraba Savings Account and Al-Wadeah Current Account pages.

Feature IBBPLC Mudaraba Savings Account IBBPLC Al-Wadeah Current Account
Typical use Personal savings and relatively few transactions Frequent transactions; the bank says transactions are unlimited
Profit Variable profit under Mudaraba; provisional payments may be adjusted after the annual final calculation No profit, according to the bank
Minimum balance listed by the bank Tk 500 Tk 1,000
Eligibility described on the product page Bangladeshi nationals aged 18 or older; joint accounts and guardian opening for a minor are listed Eligible individuals and multiple personal or business categories are listed

These are the terms published for IBBPLC products, not a standard for every Islamic bank in Bangladesh. Confirm the selected bank’s current product rules, balance requirements and charges before applying.

Check eligibility, balance and the right application form

Start with the bank’s official product page and forms index. IBBPLC separates forms for individual accounts, term deposits, Waqf, organizations, government or semi-government and autonomous bodies, and offshore accounts. An applicant opening a business, joint, minor or other non-standard account may need a different form and supporting documents than an individual saver. See the bank’s forms index.

  • Used Book in Good Condition

The Mudaraba Savings Account page lists Bangladeshi nationality and age 18 or older for an individual account, while also describing joint operation and guardian opening for a minor. Check with the bank how those options apply to your circumstances. Do not assume the Tk 500 minimum balance or personal-account document list applies to a different product.

Gather the documents for IBBPLC Mudaraba savings

For its Mudaraba Savings Account, IBBPLC lists the following documents. The bank may ask for additional evidence:

  • A completed and signed account-opening form.
  • One accepted identity document: NID, valid passport or driving licence.
  • Two recent passport-size photographs of the applicant, attested by an introducer.
  • The nominee’s NID and photograph.
  • A recent utility bill if the applicant’s present address differs from the address on the identity document.

This list is specific to the product page cited above. Requirements may differ for other banks, products, applicants and application routes. Ask the chosen bank what it requires before submitting an application, particularly if you are applying jointly, on behalf of a minor, or for an organization.

Apply online only if you meet the e-KYC route’s limits

IBBPLC’s e-KYC portal says its online route is for natural persons with a valid NID. It requests a customer photograph, images of the front and back of the NID, and a nominee photograph or NID image. The portal’s flow includes selecting an account, uploading images, entering customer and KYC information, and creating the account. Its existence does not establish that every IBBPLC account or applicant can open an account online.

  1. Open the portal and check whether the account type and applicant fit the stated e-KYC eligibility.
  2. Select an available account and upload the requested customer, NID and nominee images.
  3. Enter the customer and KYC information requested by the portal, then follow its account-creation steps.

If you do not have a valid NID, are applying for a business or other entity, or cannot use the portal for your chosen product, ask the bank about its branch or paper application process instead of assuming online onboarding is available.

The portal displays monthly checking-account deposit and withdrawal limits of BDT 1,00,000, a term-deposit limit of up to BDT 10,00,000, and a special-deposit-scheme maturity limit of up to BDT 10,00,000, attributing them to Bangladesh Bank guidance. These are figures shown on the bank portal, not confirmation of the limits currently applicable to every applicant or product. Bangladesh Bank’s guidelines index lists “Guidelines on Electronic Know-Your-Customer (e-KYC), March, 2026”; check the current regulator guidance and the bank before relying on the portal figures. The index is available at Bangladesh Bank’s guidelines list.

Understand profit, withdrawals and charges before signing

For a Mudaraba savings account, do not treat a provisional profit payment as a fixed or guaranteed rate. IBBPLC says it makes provisional profit payments twice a year and may adjust the amount after its annual final calculation. The bank also describes a lowest-balance basis and a withdrawal condition on the product page. Its deposits page says, “The rate of profit paid is variable.” Read the current terms and ask how the calculation and withdrawal conditions apply to your account; the relevant bank pages are Mudaraba Savings Account and Deposit Products.

Before you sign, ask the bank to explain the current schedule of charges and any conditions that affect your intended use. The Mudaraba product page refers customers to the schedule of charges but does not provide a complete current fee schedule in the information cited here.

  • Minimum balance and any consequences of falling below it.
  • Account-opening, maintenance or transaction charges, plus applicable taxes or duties.
  • Debit-card, cheque-book, SMS and Internet-banking availability and charges.
  • Withdrawal limits or conditions, and how and when profit is calculated and paid, if applicable.
  • Any extra verification or documents required for your applicant type.

What Islamic-banking guidance does—and does not—tell you

Bangladesh Bank’s Islamic-banking guideline describes principles, terminology and deposit or investment modes. It says the guideline is supplementary to, not a substitute for, applicable banking and company laws and regulations. It does not remove the need to meet the chosen bank’s product-specific identity and KYC requirements. Read the Bangladesh Bank Islamic-banking guideline page alongside the bank’s own current account terms.

If you are comparing providers, use each bank’s own product pages and forms. For example, Al-Arafah Islami Bank has a separate forms page; another bank’s process should not be assumed to match IBBPLC’s checklist.
