To open a joint bank account with your partner in the United States, agree on how you’ll use and fund it, choose a bank or credit union that allows joint ownership, complete identity checks and ownership paperwork for both applicants, then make any required opening deposit. The exact documents, application method, fees and minimums depend on the institution.
1. Agree on what the account is for
Before applying, decide which shared expenses or goals the account will cover, how each of you will contribute, and whether you’ll keep separate accounts. Talk through what you would change if your household budget or relationship circumstances change. The FDIC recommends discussing account structure, recurring expenses and savings goals before combining finances in its guide to sharing finances.
2. Compare institutions and account terms
Look for a joint checking or savings account that fits the purpose you agreed on. Compare fees, minimum balances, overdraft settings, ATM and branch access, interest on savings, and features such as debit cards, checks, bill pay and transfers. Confirm how each owner will access the account and whether both applicants can apply online, through an app or in person. The FDIC says consumers can apply in person, online or through a mobile app, but some banks set narrower procedures. For example, Santander’s joint-checking information says applicants must apply together at a branch; that is a bank-specific requirement, not a universal rule.
Check the institution’s current terms directly before applying: fees, minimums, application options and account features vary by provider.

3. Prepare identity information for both applicants
Each applicant must satisfy the bank’s customer-identification checks. The OCC says a bank’s customer identification program must obtain each person’s name, date of birth, address and identification number. The FDIC’s GetBanked guide suggests having a Social Security number or ITIN and an identity document—such as a driver’s license, state or military ID, or passport—ready.
Those examples are not a guaranteed document list. Banks set their own acceptable documents and verification procedures, so ask the chosen institution what each of you needs, including how it handles different proof-of-address documents. The OCC explains identification requirements here.

4. Apply together and confirm ownership
Follow the bank’s application instructions. Both partners will generally need to complete the required application and provide ownership confirmation, such as signing a signature card or completing an electronic equivalent. For FDIC joint-account classification, co-owners must sign the signature card—including electronically—or the bank’s records must establish co-ownership; see the FDIC’s joint-account rules.
5. Make any opening deposit and set up access
Deposit the required amount, if any, and confirm when the account is active. The FDIC notes that some institutions may allow an account to be opened with as little as $25; this is an example, not a standard minimum. Ask how to set up each owner’s login, debit card, checks, bill pay, transfers and any alerts you want. Confirm the account’s overdraft options and fees before using it for recurring payments.

Understand what joint ownership allows
A joint account is more than a way to share statements: each owner can have meaningful authority over the money. The FDIC says, “When two or more people establish a joint deposit account together in an FDIC insured bank, each co-owner has equal rights to make withdrawals and transactions from the joint account.” The CFPB likewise cautions that a joint owner may be able to withdraw funds without the other owner’s consent. Read the agreement and ask the bank what each owner can do before adding a name.
If your goal is to let someone help with bill paying or banking rather than share ownership, adding them as an owner is not the only option. The CFPB discusses alternatives such as a carefully written power of attorney, convenience account or trust arrangement in its guidance on joint accounts and financial planners. Consider qualified legal or financial advice for your circumstances.

Choose the ownership terms with care
Ask whether the account provides rights of survivorship or is held as tenants in common, and read the agreement and relevant state-law terms. With rights of survivorship, funds generally pass to the surviving owner when one owner dies. With a tenants-in-common arrangement, the deceased owner’s share may pass to heirs under a will or state law. The CFPB explains the distinction in its answer about what happens to a joint account when an owner dies.

At an FDIC-insured bank, qualifying joint deposits are insured up to $250,000 for each co-owner’s combined interests in all qualifying joint accounts at that same bank—not $250,000 for each account. The FDIC generally assumes equal ownership unless the bank’s records clearly show otherwise. Coverage depends on meeting the joint-account category’s requirements, including that co-owners are living people, have equal withdrawal rights, and have signed the signature card or are established as co-owners in bank records. Review the FDIC’s joint-account guidance and deposit-insurance brochure for details.
