To open a certificate of deposit (CD) account, choose a term and provider, check the CD’s rate and rules, complete the institution’s application, and deposit the required funds. Before applying, confirm that the CD is an insured bank deposit and understand the early-withdrawal penalty and what happens at maturity. This guide is focused on U.S. accounts; application channels and requirements vary by provider.
1. Choose a term that fits when you’ll need the money
A CD is a bank time deposit: you deposit money for a specified term, rather than buying a physical product. The FDIC describes common terms as roughly three months to five years or longer. Pick a term based on when you expect to use the funds; withdrawing early may trigger a penalty. See the FDIC’s guide to shopping for a CD.
2. Compare the CD’s rate and contract terms
Compare offers with the same term and consider the full agreement, not just the advertised annual percentage yield (APY). Rates and offers change, so verify current disclosures with the provider before applying.
- APY and interest: Check how interest is calculated, when it is credited, and whether it is paid into the CD or elsewhere.
- Minimum opening deposit: Providers set their own minimums. For example, CIBC Bank USA lists $1,000 for its Agility CD, Santander lists $500 for its CDs, and Wells Fargo lists $2,500 for a standard fixed-rate CD. These are provider-specific examples, not a market-wide standard. See CIBC’s Agility CD page, Santander’s CD page, and Wells Fargo’s CD page.
- Early withdrawal: A fixed-rate CD commonly charges a penalty for withdrawing before the term ends. Check how the penalty is calculated and whether it could reduce your interest or principal. Some market-linked CDs may limit early redemption.
- Maturity, grace period, and renewal: Find the maturity date, how long you have to act afterward, and whether the CD renews automatically if you do nothing. Check what rate applies if it renews.
- Special features: Review any call feature or market-linked terms; these can affect how long the deposit remains invested or how returns work.
- Eligibility and application channel: Confirm that the provider serves your location and whether you can apply online or must visit a branch.
The FDIC discusses early-withdrawal penalties and other CD features in its consumer guide. CIBC’s product information describes a 10-day grace period after maturity; other providers may set different windows and renewal defaults. Check the terms for the specific CD you choose.

3. Verify the bank and deposit-insurance coverage
Confirm that the CD is a deposit issued by an FDIC-insured bank. You can check a bank using the FDIC’s BankFind tool. The FDIC’s standard maximum coverage is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category. Principal and accrued interest count toward the limit, and accounts at separate branches of the same bank are not insured separately. Review the FDIC’s deposit insurance brochure for details.
If you are considering a brokered CD, confirm which bank will hold the deposit and read the placement and account documents. Do not assume that a brokerage account itself establishes FDIC coverage; coverage depends on the issuing bank and applicable ownership rules.

4. Prepare the application information and opening deposit
There is no single national application checklist. The institution’s requirements depend on the product and how you apply. The provider pages reviewed illustrate the differences:
| Provider and CD | Channel stated | Requirements or minimum listed |
|---|---|---|
| CIBC Bank USA Agility CD | Online application | SSN, U.S. driver’s license or state-issued ID, current U.S. home address, employment information, and joint applicant details if applicable; $1,000 minimum opening deposit. |
| Santander CD | Must be opened in a branch | SSN, government-issued ID, valid email address, and $500 minimum. |
These details come from CIBC’s Agility CD page and Santander’s CD page; they are examples rather than universal requirements. Check the provider’s current instructions for accepted identification, eligibility, funding methods, and any joint-owner or beneficiary information.
