To open a “Bitcoin account,” first choose what you mean: a self-custody wallet, where you control the keys that authorize spending, or a custodial account with a provider that manages those keys for you. Bitcoin is recorded on the blockchain; a wallet manages the credentials needed to spend it. The right setup depends on whether you prefer direct control or provider-managed access.
Choose between a self-custody wallet and a custodial account
“Bitcoin account” is not a standardized product name. It may refer to a wallet app or device you control, or to an account at an exchange or other custodian. The main difference is who controls the private keys—the credentials that authorize bitcoin transactions.
| Consideration | Self-custody wallet | Custodial account |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys | You control them and are responsible for protecting them. | The provider manages access to the keys. |
| Recovering access | You generally need your recovery phrase or the wallet’s supported recovery method. | Access depends on the provider’s account recovery process. |
| If access is lost | If you lose the keys and cannot restore the wallet, you may lose access to the bitcoin. | You rely on the provider to restore account access. |
| Provider failure exposure | You do not depend on an exchange to hold the keys, but you bear responsibility for your own security. | You rely on the provider’s security and solvency; access may be limited if it fails or is compromised. |
| Convenience and withdrawals | You manage your own wallet and transactions. Fees and transfer options depend on the wallet and network. | The provider may make buying and account management simpler, but withdrawal options and limits vary. |
| Privacy and costs | Privacy depends on how you use the wallet and related services; costs may include transaction or device costs. | Providers may collect personal information and charge account, transaction, or transfer fees. Terms vary. |
Neither approach is best for everyone. A wallet app can be convenient for frequent use; a hardware wallet can reduce online exposure but introduces physical-device risks. A custodian can manage key access, but you depend on its policies and continued operation.
How to open a self-custody Bitcoin wallet
In self-custody, you control the private keys, so protecting the recovery information is part of setting up the wallet—not an optional extra. Bitcoin.org describes a wallet as an application that manages the keys that allow you to spend bitcoin. See its Bitcoin FAQ for wallet and security guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
- Choose a wallet type for your device and use. A hot wallet runs on an internet-connected device and is convenient for frequent transactions. Cold storage, including a hardware wallet, reduces online exposure but is less convenient and can be lost, damaged, or stolen. No wallet type is universally safest for every user.
- Get the wallet from a verified publisher channel. Confirm that the app or device is genuine and that you are using the publisher’s official distribution channel. Avoid links sent by strangers or unsolicited “support” messages.
- Create the wallet and follow its backup instructions. The wallet will provide a recovery phrase or another recovery method. Make sure you understand how restoration works before you rely on the wallet.
- Record the recovery phrase securely offline. Keep it private and protected from loss or damage. Do not share it, photograph it, or save it in a cloud service. Anyone who obtains the phrase may be able to access the wallet.
- Test recovery before moving substantial funds. Use the wallet’s documented recovery procedure, following its instructions carefully. Do not enter a recovery phrase into a website or share it with a person claiming to provide support.
- Send only after checking the details. Verify the recipient address and transaction information before confirming. Bitcoin.org warns that bitcoin transactions are irreversible, so a mistaken transfer may not be recoverable.
How to open a custodial Bitcoin account
A custodial account is opened with an exchange or another provider that manages private-key access. The provider’s signup steps, eligibility, identity checks, funding methods, withdrawal terms, and available services depend on the provider and your jurisdiction; there is no universal process.

- Whether it supports bitcoin in your location and lets you withdraw it to a wallet you control.
- Who holds the assets and what the custody terms say about access, account restrictions, and provider failure.
- What security measures and account protections it describes, and what any insurance claim actually covers or excludes.
- How it uses personal information and what privacy choices are available.
- Account, trading, deposit, and withdrawal fees, including any limits or conditions.
- What happens to customer access and assets if the provider suspends service, becomes insolvent, or is compromised.
Do not assume that a balance shown in an account means you hold the keys or can withdraw without restrictions. Confirm the custody arrangement and withdrawal terms before depositing money.
Protect your wallet and avoid common scams
- Keep the recovery phrase secret. Legitimate wallet support should not need you to disclose it. Never enter it into a message, support chat, or unfamiliar website.
- Verify the destination before sending. Check the full address and transaction details; a mistaken bitcoin transaction generally cannot be reversed.
- Do not pay bitcoin to unlock funds. Treat demands to send bitcoin to release a prize, recover a wallet, or “verify” an account as a warning sign.
- Plan for loss and physical damage. A hot wallet depends on the security of its internet-connected device. A cold-storage device may be lost, stolen, or damaged; your recovery method still needs secure protection.
U.S. federal tax considerations
For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets as property. Merely holding digital assets or buying them with real currency does not by itself require a “Yes” answer to the digital asset question on a federal return; certain receipts, sales, exchanges, and other dispositions do. Check the IRS guidance for the tax year you are filing and consult a qualified tax professional if your situation is unclear. Tax treatment and reporting obligations may differ outside the United States.
