The right setup depends on what should qualify, which destinations you serve, and whether the offer applies to every product or only selected items.
How do I offer free shipping on Shopify?
Shipping zones and rates determine where you ship and what customers pay, as Shopify explains in its shipping zones and rates guide. In a zone or shipping option, set a rate to free to remove the shipping charge for orders that match its coverage and conditions. A rate can be flat, based on order amount or weight, or calculated by a carrier or app.
Shopify stores may show shipping profiles and rates or the newer shipping options by market. The transition is gradual: existing configurations remain until a store is upgraded, at which point Shopify migrates them. Follow the controls shown in your own admin; navigation is not identical for every store. See Shopify’s shipping options by market documentation for the current explanation.
How do I set a free-shipping threshold?
Set an order-amount condition on a shipping rate so that the rate is free once an order reaches your chosen minimum. Shopify’s rate setup guidance covers conditional rates and their configuration: Setting up shipping zones and rates.

- In the shipping settings shown in your admin, open the relevant shipping zone or market shipping option.
- Add or edit a rate for the destination and choose the order-amount condition that matches the threshold you want to offer.
- Set the qualifying rate’s price to zero, then check that your other rates cover orders below the threshold.
- Review the upper end of each amount tier. If a tier is intended to cover all larger orders, leave it without a maximum; a gap beyond the highest configured tier can result in a shipping error.
Choose the threshold based on your own delivery costs and margins. Shopify’s sample amounts in setup instructions are examples, not a recommended threshold for your business.
Can I offer free shipping only on certain products?
Yes. Shopify’s documented approach is to create a custom shipping profile for the selected products and add a free flat rate to that profile. Products not included in the profile can continue using their existing shipping rules. See Shopify’s shipping profile guidance.

Profiles can also reflect fulfillment locations, so check that the products and locations in the profile match the offer you intend. When an order contains products covered by multiple profiles, Shopify may combine applicable rates. Check the checkout total for mixed-profile carts rather than assuming the free rate removes every shipping charge.
How do I give a customer a free-shipping code?
Create a free-shipping discount and choose whether customers redeem it with a code or receive it as an automatic discount. Shopify lets merchants limit the discount by country, eligible customers, and shipping rate, and optionally require a minimum purchase. The setup options are documented in Shopify’s free-shipping discount guide.

| Setup | Who or what qualifies | How the charge is handled | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free shipping rate | Orders matching the rate’s destination and any conditions | A configured rate is set to zero | Check zone coverage and amount or weight tiers. |
| Threshold-based rate | Orders that reach the specified amount or weight tier | The qualifying rate is free; other tiers can charge shipping | Ensure the tiers cover the intended order range without gaps. |
| Free-shipping discount | Customers and countries eligible under the discount rules | A code or automatic discount removes eligible shipping charges | Review minimum purchase and shipping-rate limits. |
| Product-specific profile | Selected products assigned to a custom profile | A free flat rate applies through that profile | Mixed-profile orders may combine rates. |
All four methods still depend on the destination being served. A country or region must be included in an active market and the relevant shipping zone or market option. The best fit is the simplest configuration that covers the products, customers, and destinations you actually intend to include.

What should I check before announcing the offer?
- Destination: Verify the country or region is active in your market and included in the applicable zone or shipping option.
- Products and locations: Confirm each product’s shipping profile and its fulfillment locations match the offer.
- Tier coverage: Look for gaps, overlapping conditions, or a maximum that leaves larger carts without a matching rate.
- Discount rules: For a discount, verify customer eligibility, eligible countries, minimum purchase, and maximum shipping-rate settings.
- Mixed carts: Test orders containing products from different profiles to see how Shopify combines applicable rates.
- Checkout behavior: Test representative carts and destinations in your store before promoting the offer.
How does free shipping affect fulfillment costs?
Free shipping changes what the customer pays at checkout; it does not make delivery cost-free for the merchant. Estimate delivery costs and the effect on your margins before deciding whether to subsidize every order, restrict eligibility, or set a threshold. There is no universally suitable threshold established for all stores.
Shopify supports buying and printing shipping labels from the admin, and recommends entering package dimensions and weights to help carriers calculate shipping costs accurately. Available labels and carriers can depend on the merchant’s location and eligible carriers. See Shopify’s shipping label documentation.
Connecting your own accounts with carriers such as UPS, FedEx, or USPS requires third-party carrier-calculated shipping. Shopify says this may require specific plans or an additional monthly fee; check the current carrier-calculated shipping requirements before relying on a particular plan or price.
