How to Move Direct Deposits and Automatic Payments to a New Bank

A careful bank switch starts with an inventory: redirect deposits, update company debits and bank bill pay separately, keep funds for pending transactions, and close the old account only after verifying the change.

Open the new account first, then update each deposit and payment instruction separately. Confirm when the first deposit will arrive, keep enough money in the old account for pending activity, and close it only after you have verified that the transition is complete. There is no single schedule that applies to every U.S. employer, benefit provider, biller, or bank.

1. Open the new account and make a complete inventory

Before changing anything, open the account you plan to use and make sure you can access the information needed to set up deposits and payments. Compare the account’s fees and the conditions for avoiding them, minimum-balance requirements, convenience, branch or ATM access if relevant, online and mobile banking, and bill-pay services. Terms and features vary, so confirm them with the provider. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s bank-account guidance recommends comparing fees and considering convenience and services.

List every transaction that regularly moves money into or out of the old account. Review statements and payment settings so you include items that do not happen every month.

  • Money in: payroll, benefits, and other recurring deposits.
  • Company-initiated debits: utilities, insurance, loans, subscriptions, and other bills authorized to withdraw from the account.
  • Bank-sent payments: recurring payments set up through the old bank’s bill-pay service.
  • Other outstanding activity: checks that have not cleared and scheduled payments that have not yet occurred.

2. Redirect each deposit at its source

For each paycheck, benefit, or other deposit, use the process provided by the employer or payment provider to submit the new account information. Opening a new bank account does not automatically redirect deposits. Ask the payor when the new instructions will take effect and when the first deposit is expected in the new account. Processing schedules and cutoffs differ, so do not assume a particular number of days.

3. Update payments according to who sends them

First identify how each payment is set up. With an automatic debit, you authorize a company to take money from your account. With recurring bank bill pay, you instruct your bank or credit union to send money to a company. Update the instruction with the party that controls it.

Company-initiated automatic debits

Contact each company that withdraws payments directly and provide the new account information through its approved process. Confirm that the new instruction is active and ask when the first withdrawal from the new account will occur. Arrange an alternative payment method if a bill is due before that date.

Recurring payments through bank bill pay

Set up or transfer each recurring payment through the new bank or credit union’s bill-pay service. Check the scheduled payment date and confirm the new instruction is active. Stop the corresponding recurring instruction through the old bank’s bill-pay service so both banks do not send the same payment.

For every payment, coordinate the new instruction with the old one: avoid turning off the old method before you know how the next bill will be paid, but do not leave both instructions active for the same payment.

4. Time withdrawals around the first new deposit

Ask each payor for the expected date of the first deposit into the new account. Then schedule payments from the new account for dates after the funds are expected to arrive. Confirm payment effective dates with the biller or bank that handles each instruction; the timing can vary.

The CFPB advises: “Leave enough to cover any checks that haven’t cleared or automatic payments that haven’t taken place.” Keep sufficient funds in the old account for those items while the transition is underway, and monitor both accounts for balances and scheduled transactions. This reduces the risk of a returned payment, overdraft, or nonsufficient-funds charge.

5. Stop an old company debit carefully

If a company-initiated debit should no longer occur, CFPB guidance says to contact both the company and your bank or credit union, and to follow up in writing. Keep copies of requests and note when you sent them. Ask the financial institution whether a stop-payment order is appropriate; it may charge a fee. The CFPB’s guidance on stopping automatic payments was last reviewed August 28, 2026.

Stopping a debit does not cancel the underlying subscription, contract, or loan obligation. If you still owe the payment, arrange another way to pay it. The CFPB also explains how automatic debits work; that guidance was last reviewed August 28, 2026.

6. Verify the change before closing the old account

Check both accounts and confirm that deposits are arriving in the new one and payments are being made from it as intended. Make sure outstanding checks and scheduled debits have cleared or have another payment arrangement. Once the transition is verified, transfer the remaining funds, close the old account, and ask the old institution for written confirmation of closure. The CFPB’s checking-account moving checklist recommends closing after deposits and payments have been moved and requesting written confirmation.
