The safe method is a verified, two-stage transfer: initialize a hardware wallet with a new wallet and offline recovery backup, generate a receive address for the exact asset and network, verify that address on the device’s own screen, then send a small test transaction before moving the rest. Your coins do not enter the physical device; the blockchain records a transfer to an address controlled by keys that the device keeps offline.
A wrong address, wrong network or compromised recovery phrase can permanently jeopardize a transfer. Use the procedure below as a general workflow, then confirm the current screens, supported networks, fees and limits in your chosen wallet and exchange.

What “moving crypto to cold storage” actually means
Cryptocurrency remains recorded on its blockchain. When you withdraw from an exchange or send from a software wallet, you create an on-chain transaction that changes control of the specified amount from the sender’s address to a receiving address. A hardware wallet stores and protects the private keys needed to authorize future transactions; it does not contain a physical balance of coins.

A hardware wallet is one common implementation: the companion application on a computer or phone can display balances and prepare transactions, while the device protects the signing keys and asks you to confirm important details. You can receive funds while the device is disconnected because the address exists on the blockchain. You need the device, and a valid recovery backup, when you later need to authorize a spend.

Bitcoin.org’s FAQ explains the distinction between the digital record and the keys that control it: Bitcoin.org FAQ. Treat the recovery backup as the most sensitive information in the entire setup. Anyone who obtains it may be able to recreate the wallet without possessing your device.
Before you start: a safety checklist
Do these checks before opening a withdrawal screen. They prevent the most expensive mistakes, which are usually made before the transaction is submitted.
- Use a genuine device and official setup flow. Follow the manufacturer’s current instructions and install the official companion application from a source you can verify. Do not use a wallet that arrives with a recovery phrase already written out.
- Decide whether this is a new wallet. For a new cold-storage destination, create a new wallet on the device. Restoring an old backup is a separate decision and can preserve risks from a previous wallet or provider.
- Prepare an offline backup method. Have the supplied recovery-backup material ready, and plan a physically secure place for it. Do not photograph it, save it in cloud storage, email it, paste it into a notes app or type it into a computer or phone.
- Identify the exact asset and network. “The same coin” can be available on several networks. The destination must support the asset on the network selected by the sender.
- Check limits and fees. Exchanges may impose minimum withdrawals, while receiving services may impose minimum deposits. A test amount must be large enough to satisfy the applicable rule and still account for the network fee.
- Use a private environment. Avoid public computers, screen-sharing sessions and unsolicited support messages. No legitimate helper needs your wallet backup.
Step 1: initialize the hardware wallet and create a verified backup
Create a new wallet when establishing a new destination
Connect or activate the device only through its official setup process. Select the option to create a new wallet if the goal is to move assets from an exchange or another wallet into a newly established cold-storage destination. The device should generate the recovery words or other backup material; never substitute a phrase supplied by a seller, an online generator or a support representative.

Write the backup in the order displayed by the device. Complete the device’s backup-check procedure, which may ask you to confirm selected words or another part of the record. This check is important: a backup that was copied incorrectly will not help you recover later.
Keep the backup offline and private
Store the written backup where unauthorized people cannot see or remove it, and protect it from the physical hazards relevant to your location. Make any duplicate only through a deliberate, offline process that does not expose the words to a camera, keyboard, cloud account or internet-connected device.
Trezor’s wallet-backup guidance states: “Never enter your wallet backup anywhere unless prompted by your Trezor device.” This is a vendor instruction, but it captures the operational rule: enter recovery information only when the physical device itself requests it during a legitimate recovery flow. Never enter it into a website, exchange, computer, phone, chat or form.
Do not confuse a backup restoration with a transfer
Restoring an existing backup makes the device control the addresses derived from that backup. It does not move funds from a different wallet into a new one. If your objective is to separate funds from a prior provider or potentially exposed wallet, initialize a fresh wallet and send the assets to its newly generated address instead of importing the old phrase.

Confirm two independent facts before generating an address:
- The device and app support the specific asset.
- They support the exact network on which the asset is currently held and will be withdrawn.
Asset names can be reused across networks, and an address format that appears familiar is not proof of compatibility. If the exchange offers several network choices, consult the asset project’s and destination wallet’s official network instructions whenever the choice is unclear. Sending on an unsupported network can make recovery uncertain.
Understand who chooses the network
The sender’s withdrawal form normally determines the network used for the transaction. Your destination account must be prepared for that same network. If you are sending from a software wallet, inspect its send screen for the selected network and any fee setting. If you are withdrawing from an exchange, read the network label next to the asset and destination address rather than relying on an asset name alone.

Do not switch networks simply because one displays a lower fee. Compatibility and recoverability come first. A lower-cost route is not useful if the destination wallet cannot control or display the resulting asset.
Step 3: generate and verify the receive address
Generate a fresh address for the selected account
Choose Receive (or the equivalent action) in the official companion app, select the exact account and network, and let the app generate the address. If the app presents a memo, tag or other destination field for that asset, note it; some services require an additional identifier beyond the address.
Compare the app with the device screen
Ask the hardware wallet to show or verify the receive address on its own screen. Compare the complete string shown on the device with the string displayed in the companion app, including the beginning, ending and any network-specific prefix. Only use the address after the two match.
This check matters because malicious software can replace an address copied from a computer or phone. Address-poisoning scams also place look-alike addresses in transaction histories, hoping that a user copies one without checking its full value. Never select a destination merely because it resembles an address you used previously.

After the device confirms the address, copy it from the app’s verified display into the exchange or sending wallet. Avoid retyping a long address. Before submitting, compare the pasted value again with the device display; a clipboard replacement can occur after the first check.

If the sender asks for a destination tag, memo or payment ID, enter the value shown for that receive flow exactly where the sender requests it. An address can be correct while a required secondary identifier is missing.
Step 4: prepare the withdrawal or send transaction
On an exchange
- Open the withdrawal or send function for the exact asset.
- Paste the verified receive address.
- Select the same network you confirmed in the wallet app.
- Enter the amount, taking the exchange’s minimum-withdrawal rule and its stated fee into account.
- Review any memo, tag or destination field required for that asset.
- Use the exchange’s confirmation and security steps, but never provide your wallet recovery backup.
From a software wallet
- Open the send function for the exact asset account.
- Paste the hardware wallet’s verified receive address.
- Choose the matching network and review the wallet’s proposed network fee.
- Check the amount and any required memo or tag.
- Confirm the transaction only after the destination, asset and network agree with the hardware wallet’s receive screen.
Exchange interfaces, supported networks, fee schedules and limits change. This is a general process, not a promise that a particular provider uses these labels or steps.
Step 5: send a small test transaction
When a test is worthwhile
For a large transfer, send a small test amount first. The test checks the entire path: address, asset, network, memo or tag, exchange rules and wallet display. A test creates an additional transaction and may incur another network fee, so it is a risk-control measure rather than a free guarantee.
Choose an amount that can actually arrive
Check the exchange’s minimum withdrawal and the destination service’s minimum deposit before deciding the test size. A tiny amount below either threshold can be rejected, delayed or not credited. Leave enough value for the stated network fee; the amount deducted may differ from the amount that arrives.
Wait for confirmation and verify receipt
- Submit the test withdrawal or send transaction.
- Save the transaction ID if the sender provides one.
- Wait for the required blockchain confirmation rather than treating a pending status as final.
- Check the destination account in the companion app and, if necessary, the sender’s transaction record.
- Confirm that the amount is associated with the intended asset and network.
Do not send the remainder merely because the sender says “submitted.” Proceed only when the test is confirmed and visible in the intended wallet.
Step 6: send the remaining balance
Return to the sender’s withdrawal screen and repeat the review instead of assuming the earlier details persisted correctly. Verify the complete destination address against the hardware wallet, the asset name, the network, the amount, and any memo or tag. Then authorize the remaining transfer.
Keep the transaction ID and confirmation details for your records if they help you monitor status. They are not a substitute for the recovery backup and should not be confused with it. Never disclose the backup words while asking for help with a pending transaction.
What can go wrong, and what to do
The asset or network is unsupported
Stop before sending if the wallet does not list the asset or network you selected. Ask the asset project and the destination wallet for official compatibility instructions. Do not infer support from a similar ticker, an address format or a third-party claim.

The transaction is pending
Use the sender’s transaction ID and its stated status information to determine whether the transaction was broadcast, waiting for confirmation or rejected. Network congestion and fee conditions can affect timing. Avoid sending a second transfer simply because the first is slow; first establish whether the original transaction exists and is still valid.
The funds do not appear after confirmation
Check that you are viewing the correct account, asset and network in the companion app. Confirm the transaction ID on the relevant network and compare the receiving address with the address shown on the device. If the transaction went to an unsupported network or an incorrect address, recovery is uncertain; contact only the official destination provider or asset project and do not share your backup.
The address was replaced or copied incorrectly
Do not approve the transaction. Generate a new receive address, verify it on the hardware wallet, and replace the destination in the sender. If a transaction has already been confirmed to the wrong address, customer support generally cannot reverse it because blockchain transfers are not normally reversible. Any possible recovery depends on who controls the destination and the rules of that network.
A person asks for your recovery words
End the conversation. A support agent, exchange, wallet manufacturer or recovery service should not need the words to identify a transaction. Treat requests through email, social media, chat or screen-sharing as an attempted theft.
Receiving while the device is offline
Once you have verified a receive address, the sender can broadcast to it while the hardware wallet is disconnected. The blockchain records the transaction independently of the device’s power or cable connection. Reconnect the device only through the official app when you need to inspect the account in detail or authorize a later outgoing transaction.
Offline receiving does not make the backup less important. The recovery secret remains the authority to recreate the wallet, so keep it offline and private even when no transfer is in progress.
How to choose a cold-storage device for this transfer
No device is universally safest or compatible with every token. Compare the options against the assets you actually hold and your ability to follow the process accurately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Decision criterion | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Asset and network support | The exact asset and network, not only the ticker | An otherwise valid-looking address may not accept the route you select. |
| Receive-address verification | Whether the device displays the address for independent comparison | It helps detect clipboard replacement and altered computer displays. |
| Setup and backup workflow | New-wallet creation, backup check and recovery procedure | A correctly recorded backup is essential if the device is lost or damaged. |
| Signing and confirmation controls | What transaction details the device asks you to approve | Clear on-device review reduces reliance on a potentially compromised host. |
| Operational fit | Whether you can store, connect and use it without exposing the backup | A theoretically strong setup fails if the owner cannot operate it safely. |
Independent comparative testing was not established for this general workflow. Base your choice on documented support and the controls you will actually use, then confirm current compatibility before transferring funds.
Quick Recap
Fees, limits and record-keeping
- Network fee: A blockchain transaction requires a fee set by the network and the sending wallet or exchange. A test transfer can add a second fee.
- Exchange withdrawal fee: An exchange may deduct a stated amount from the withdrawal. Read the final review screen to see what is sent and what arrives.
- Minimum withdrawal or deposit: The sender and destination can enforce different minimums. Check both before choosing a test amount.
- Confirmation time: The number of confirmations and the time required vary by asset and network. Follow the sender and destination’s current guidance.
- Records: Keep transaction IDs, dates, amounts and networks in a record that does not contain your recovery words. These details help reconcile balances without exposing control of the wallet.
A compact final checklist
- The device was initialized through its official setup flow.
- A new wallet was created when a new cold-storage destination was intended.
- The recovery backup was written in order, checked by the device and stored offline.
- The exact asset and network are supported by the destination account.
- The receive address was generated in the official app and matched on the device screen.
- The sender’s address, asset, network, amount and memo or tag were reviewed.
- Exchange limits and network fees were checked.
- A test transfer was sent for a large move and confirmed in the destination wallet.
- The remaining amount was reviewed again before authorization.
- The recovery backup was never typed, photographed, uploaded or shared.
