To find properly fitting medical scrubs, measure your chest or bust, natural waist, hips and inseam, then compare those numbers with the size chart for the exact brand and style you plan to buy. Measurements are not a universal conversion to a scrub size: charts differ, and some describe your body while others describe the garment.
What you need before measuring
- Use a flexible measuring tape made for taking body measurements; a rigid ruler or construction tape will not follow body contours accurately.
- Measure over the undergarments or light clothing you expect to wear beneath the scrubs.
- Stand naturally and keep the tape level and comfortably snug. Do not pull it tight or compress your body. Ask someone to check that the tape stays horizontal if needed.
- Write down each result with its unit, such as inches or centimeters, and use the same unit as the size chart.
How to take each measurement
Chest or bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest or bust, keeping it level beneath your armpits and across your shoulder blades. Boston University recommends using this measurement as the primary guide for choosing a scrub top size (Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine; guide last updated June 19, 2020).
Waist
Measure around your natural waistline, holding the tape slightly loose rather than cinching it. Waist placement instructions can vary by chart, so follow the directions provided by the brand whose scrubs you are considering.
Hips
Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat. Keep the tape level all the way around.

Inseam
Measure along the inside of your leg, from just below the crotch to the hem length you want. A guide may specify a particular endpoint: Oregon Health & Science University’s guide, for example, describes measuring to about one inch below the ankle (OHSU GME Scrubs Policies and Procedures, 2022). If you want to check the finished length, measure in the footwear you expect to wear and use the brand’s inseam instructions. Do not substitute your height for inseam when a chart asks for inseam.
How to use the size chart
- Find the chart for the exact brand and style. Do not assume that an XS, medium or numeric size means the same thing across brands. Even within one brand, different styles may have different cuts or chart instructions.
- Check what the measurements describe. A body-measurement chart gives ranges for the person wearing the garment. A finished-garment chart gives dimensions of the item itself. Those garment dimensions include its cut and intended ease, so they are not directly interchangeable with your body measurements. Careletics explicitly labels its chart as body measurements, not garment measurements (Careletics size chart).
- Compare the relevant measurements for each piece. For a top, start with chest or bust; Boston University’s guide also notes that people with a pear shape should account for hip measurements when selecting a top. For pants, compare waist and hip measurements with the pants chart, then check the available inseam or length separately.
- Follow that brand’s fit guidance if you fall between sizes. There is no reliable universal rule to size up or down. Use the chart’s stated ranges and fit notes for the specific garment.
Separate top and pant sizing may be possible when a brand sells pieces separately or publishes separate charts. The University of Minnesota Bookstores, for example, provides distinct men’s and women’s scrub charts with their own measurement ranges (University of Minnesota Bookstores scrub sizing).

Choose inseam and fit details separately
A pant size and its length are often separate decisions. OHSU’s 2022 guide lists regular inseams of 31–32 inches, short 29–30 inches, tall 34–35 inches and ultra-tall 36 inches unhemmed. Those are options in that guide, not a universal standard for medical scrubs.
When the chart or product details provide them, also compare garment length, rise, the stated fit (such as relaxed or modern), fabric stretch and waistband adjustability. Treat these as garment-specific details rather than substitutes for your measurements. For example, the cited Careletics chart gives separate top and bottom details and an unstretched waistband measurement for its pants.

Quick measurement checklist
- Chest or bust: fullest part, tape level under the arms and across the back.
- Waist: natural waistline, unless the chosen chart specifies a different placement.
- Hips: fullest part of hips and seat, standing with feet together.
- Inseam: inside leg from just below the crotch to the desired hem, using the brand’s endpoint instructions.
- Chart: exact brand and style; confirm whether its figures are body or finished-garment measurements.
- Fit: choose top and pants independently where the brand permits, and check length options separately.
