Then distinguish attributed results from incremental results: tracking can show which interactions are associated with a sale, but a credible comparison group is needed to estimate what the campaign caused.
Start with the business result, not the easiest number to count
Choose one primary outcome that fits the campaign: revenue, qualified opportunities, registrations, store visits, donations, or another business result. Define exactly what qualifies before distribution, and decide what action the result will inform. A delivered mail piece, billboard impression, event attendee, QR scan, or phone call may indicate exposure or response; none is automatically a business outcome.

The American Advertising and Marketing Association (AAMA) recommends deciding what to measure and what decision will change as a result. That keeps a campaign from being declared successful merely because a delivery or engagement metric rose. AAMA’s marketing ROI guidance also supplies a calculation to use as a starting point.

AAMA defines marketing ROI as:
Marketing ROI = (Marketing Return − Marketing Investment) ÷ Marketing Investment × 100

- Very accurate -There are inches and centimetres measurement. It's very precise. The scale is very clear to read.
- Innovative design -The height ruler is a 3D sliding design that allows you to measure yourself with one hand just by standing up straight, with almost no data error.
- Save space -Demountable design, easy to take, 79inches, 7 section ruler can be joined. When you stick them on the wall, it never affect your wall design decoration.
- Safe material -Premium ABS materials, water proof, stain proof and scratch proof, durable and colorfast. Suitable for children, nursery, adults, etc
- Idea Choice for Birthday, Christmas and Thanksgiving Day. All of them are well tested before shipped to ensure qualified standard.
Specify what counts as the return and what costs belong in the investment. For a revenue campaign, decide whether return means booked revenue, collected revenue, or another consistently available value. Include the campaign costs relevant to the decision, such as production, printing, media placement, postage, event expenses, and measurement costs. Apply the same rules when comparing campaigns.
If you want to show revenue attributed to each advertising dollar, report ROAS separately:
ROAS = Attributed Advertising Revenue ÷ Advertising Cost
ROAS is a ratio of attributed revenue to advertising cost; it does not subtract costs or prove that advertising caused the revenue. Do not label it causal ROI. When the question is whether the campaign produced outcomes that would not otherwise have happened, measure incrementality instead.
Build a response path before printing or distributing
Choose a method the audience can use and your organization can capture reliably. Assign campaign identifiers while creative materials, call systems, and forms can still be changed.
| Method | What it can record | What can be missed or misread |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign URL or landing page | Visits using the printed address and subsequent activity on the page. | Some people may type the main domain instead of the campaign URL, so those visits may not be recognized as campaign responses. |
| QR code | Scans and resulting sessions when the code leads to a tracked destination. | A scan is an interaction, not a conversion. Define and measure the downstream event separately. |
| Tracked phone number | Calls placed to the campaign number. | Staff need to handle calls consistently and log outcomes; otherwise call counts may not connect to qualified leads or sales. |
| Offer or source code | Responses or purchases where the code is entered and captured. | Missed code entry can undercount campaign activity. |
| Reply device | Completed physical replies. | People who respond by phone, online, or another route may not be counted through the reply device. |
| Customer matchback | Transactions matched later to a campaign audience using approved identifiers. | Results depend on data quality, coverage, timing, and permitted use. Shared households or organizations can make it unclear who received or acted on the campaign. |
A QR code label or printable label sheet can make it easier to place a campaign-specific code on mail, signage, or event materials. The label only provides a response route; it does not measure ROI on its own. Track what happens after the scan.

Connect responses to sales and other outcomes
Map where each measure comes from and how it will reach the final report. A response may begin in website analytics or a call system, move into a CRM, and end in a point-of-sale, customer, or finance system. Preserve the campaign identifier as the record moves from initial response through qualification, conversion, and revenue.

Before launch, document who owns each system and data transfer, when records refresh, what rules are used to match a response to an outcome, and which records are likely to be missing. Systems may disagree, and campaign IDs can be lost along the way. A report should identify its source of truth rather than silently combining inconsistent figures.
Define the conversion and measurement window
Set the primary conversion and observation window before the campaign starts. A scan, call, form submission, appointment, redemption, and purchase are different events; use one as the primary outcome and treat other interactions as supporting measures. Apply the same definitions when comparing results.
Rank #4
Choose a window that reflects the buying cycle. Direct-mail responses may arrive days or weeks after delivery, while seasonal purchases or renewals may take longer. Do not extend the window after seeing early results simply to improve the reported outcome. State the window in the final report so readers know which delayed outcomes are included.
Separate attribution from incrementality
Attribution assigns credit to observed interactions according to a model and its rules. It can help describe which tracked touchpoints preceded a conversion, but it cannot establish that the campaign caused the conversion: some people may have purchased anyway, and several channels may have influenced the same decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIncrementality asks how many outcomes occurred because of the campaign that would not otherwise have occurred. Google Ads Help defines incremental conversions as treatment conversions minus control conversions and incremental ROAS as incremental conversion value divided by total ad spend. These definitions illustrate the distinction between observed credited activity and lift against a counterfactual. Google Ads Help explains incrementality.

The W3C technical report states: “To better measure the causal effect of advertising, the use of (randomized) control trials—or, in industry terms, incrementality—is necessary.” The W3C report makes the point in its discussion of non-causal effects and control trials.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a credible test for the decision
The right level of rigor depends on the decision at stake, audience volume, campaign cost, operational feasibility, and the consequences of getting the answer wrong. Possible approaches include randomized holdouts, geographic experiments, platform lift studies, and matched-market comparisons. IAB guidance also describes model-based counterfactuals, econometric models, and hybrid proxies; these should not be presented as randomized experimental results. IAB measurement guidance emphasizes credible counterfactuals, bias control, and separating signal from noise.
- Counterfactual credibility: Does the comparison represent what would likely have happened without the campaign?
- Assignment or matching: Can people or geographies be randomized, or can comparable markets be identified?
- Volume and noise: Is there enough data to distinguish a real difference from normal variation?
- Cost and disruption: Can the organization run the test without undermining service or campaign operations?
- Outcome coverage: Can the method capture delayed purchases and overlap with other channels?
- Decision fit: Is the result intended to guide one campaign or a longer-term budget allocation?
A small campaign may not have enough volume for a reliable experiment. In that case, tracked response and attribution can still inform operations, but label the result accordingly rather than claiming causal lift. For comparisons over time, use prior campaigns with comparable audiences, outcome definitions, and observation windows.
Report the result with its limits
Make the result interpretable by stating the source of truth, calculation, attribution model or test design, response window, exclusions, and match rate. Explain relevant gaps: delayed outcomes, cross-device paths, overlapping channels, missed code entry, or incomplete call and POS records. Tracking is evidence within a defined scope, not perfect person-level truth.
Review data at the pace the decision requires. Check delivery and broken tracking paths promptly; assess optimization signals during the campaign; and allow revenue quality, retention, or incremental outcomes enough time to mature before strategic conclusions. No defensible typical offline ROI, response-rate, or channel-lift benchmark is established by the cited sources, so avoid treating a generic benchmark as a target.
