To maximize credit card rewards, match each planned purchase to a card whose current terms reward that exact merchant and transaction, then compare the usable value of the rewards with fees, prices and restrictions. A grocery-store bonus may exclude warehouse clubs or big-box retailers, and a travel bonus may depend on whether you book directly or through the card issuer’s portal.
Start with purchases you already plan to make
List your expected holiday gifts, groceries, airfare, hotel stays and other travel. For each purchase, check the cards you already hold and compare the rewards you can realistically redeem. A category card can make sense for eligible groceries or travel; a flat-rate card can be useful when a purchase does not qualify for a bonus category. Neither strategy justifies buying more or paying a fee solely to earn rewards.

Check whether the merchant actually qualifies
A store’s shelves do not determine its rewards category. Issuers may classify merchants by how they process payments, so a retailer that sells food may not count as a supermarket. Purchases routed through some third-party payment accounts or digital wallets may also fail to qualify if the transaction is not processed in the relevant category.

Chase says its grocery category can exclude warehouse clubs, discount stores, pharmacies and retailers that sell only a limited selection of groceries. Its category FAQ also explains that some payment methods may not qualify. Read the terms for your specific card and check the merchant category when available; do not assume that Walmart, Target, Costco or another food seller earns a supermarket bonus. Example: a limited-time rotating category
Chase announced that Freedom Flex cardmembers could earn 5% in Q4 2026 on grocery stores, dining and eligible American Red Cross donations, after activating the offer. The 5% applies to up to $1,500 in combined purchases across the quarter’s bonus categories; Walmart, Target, warehouse clubs and wholesale clubs are excluded from its grocery category. Choose a travel booking channel by total value
Before booking a flight or hotel, compare the card’s earn rate for direct purchases with its rate for bookings through the issuer’s travel portal. Some issuer categories count only tickets bought directly from airlines or stays booked directly with hotels; purchases through travel agencies, discount sites or packages may be treated differently. Judge rewards by what you can redeem
Points and miles are program currencies, not guaranteed cash equivalents. Depending on the program, redemption may include cash back, partner transfers, gift cards, goods or services, and the value can change—including when you redeem. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau discusses these options and warns that issuers and loyalty programs can change rewards value. CFPB Circular 2024-07
Compare the reward you can actually use with the purchase’s cash cost and any restrictions. For example, a travel redemption is useful only if its available dates, booking rules and value suit your plans. Chase lists travel, gift cards, cash back and other Ultimate Rewards redemptions, but options and values are specific to that program; another issuer may work differently. The CFPB circular also repeats an older statistic about consumers planning to use rewards for gifts and holiday-meal groceries. It is historical, not a current estimate of how much optimizing rewards saves.

Use a quick check before seasonal spending
- Identify the planned purchase. Separate groceries, gifts, airfare, hotels and other travel rather than assuming one card is best for all of them.
- Read the card’s current category terms. Check eligible merchants, exclusions, payment-processing rules, caps and whether you must activate an offer.
- For travel, compare booking paths. Check direct and portal earn rates, then weigh price, cancellation terms and protections.
- Estimate usable reward value. Use the redemption option you would actually choose, accounting for restrictions and any costs.
- Choose the best net fit. Include annual fees and benefits you will use, and do not add spending or pay extra just to earn points.
Offers, fees, benefits, merchant classifications and redemption terms can change. Recheck the current card agreement and offer details before a seasonal purchase or a new application. The examples above do not establish an objectively best card across issuers or for every shopper.
