Leverage magnifies gains and losses, and neither a stop order nor extra collateral guarantees an exit price or caps your loss. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that customers trading margined virtual-currency futures can lose more than their initial investment.
What are you trading: spot margin, futures, or a perpetual?
“Crypto leverage” can describe different products with different borrowing, settlement, and liquidation rules. Before comparing leverage settings, identify the instrument and read its current contract specifications.
| Instrument | What to check |
|---|---|
| Spot margin | Whether you borrow cash or crypto, the borrowing rate, collateral rules, and how the venue closes or liquidates a position. |
| Dated futures | Expiry date, settlement method, and the index, auction price, or other reference used at settlement. The CFTC notes that many virtual-currency futures are cash-settled; do not assume every contract is. |
| Perpetual futures | How the contract tracks its reference price, its funding-payment rules, and what happens if funding or margin requirements change. A perpetual does not have the same expiry and settlement mechanics as a dated futures contract. |
For every product, establish whether you receive or deliver the underlying asset or settle in cash. The CFTC advises customers to understand a futures contract’s settlement index or auction price. Its [virtual-currency trading advisory] also discusses risks of both spot and futures trading.
How much leverage should I use?
There is no universally safe leverage setting, and the available sources do not establish a suitable amount for an individual trader. Choosing higher leverage reduces the initial margin required for a given position size, but it increases exposure relative to the margin posted. A smaller adverse price move can therefore have a larger effect on that margin.

Start with the position’s notional value—the total market exposure—not the leverage number displayed by the platform. For a linear contract quoted in dollars, a simple approximation is:
Notional value = contract quantity × price
If a position has $10,000 in notional exposure and requires 10% initial margin under the venue’s rules, the initial margin would be $1,000 before fees and other adjustments. This illustration is arithmetic, not a recommended position or a guarantee that a venue will use a 10% requirement. Contract multipliers, collateral currency, margin tiers, and account settings can change the calculation.
Compare choices by their notional exposure and required margin, then consider how much you could lose if the market moves against you. Do not treat the venue’s maximum permitted leverage as a risk target.

How do I avoid liquidation when trading crypto with leverage?
You cannot guarantee that liquidation will not occur. You can, however, understand the conditions that may trigger it and avoid relying on a displayed liquidation price as an assured exit.
Find the initial and maintenance margin rules
Initial margin is the collateral required to open or maintain a position under the venue’s rules; it is not a cap on losses. Maintenance margin is the minimum collateral required to keep a position open. If account equity falls below the applicable requirement, the venue may liquidate the position. Requirements can vary with position notional and may change by tier.
For example, Binance’s documentation describes maintenance-margin tiers and warns that failure to meet the requirement may lead to liquidation. Those rules are specific to Binance products and can change; check the current schedule for the exact contract and account you would use. See [Binance’s leverage and margin documentation].

Check the liquidation trigger and price reference
A venue may use mark price, index price, last traded price, or another defined reference for a liquidation trigger. These are not interchangeable. Binance’s futures guidance describes mark price as its liquidation reference. It also warns that in volatile conditions the actual execution price can differ from the initially calculated liquidation price. Read the relevant contract rules rather than assuming the chart price or a stop-order trigger controls liquidation. Binance explains its own process in [its futures liquidation protocols].
One Binance illustration, on a page updated January 2, 2026, shows a hypothetical 1 BTC position entered at $55,000 with 20x leverage and a long liquidation price of $50,200; its corresponding short example shows $59,750. These figures describe that illustration only, not a typical liquidation distance or a suggested setting. They do not apply automatically to other dates, contracts, margin balances, or venues. See [Binance’s liquidation example].
Reduce exposure before relying on more collateral
Reducing position size lowers notional exposure. Adding margin may move a position farther from a maintenance threshold under a venue’s rules, but it puts more collateral at risk and does not guarantee that the position will avoid liquidation. Binance’s guidance discusses reducing a position or increasing margin when collateral approaches the maintenance requirement; neither action removes execution risk.

Review whether the venue supports partial liquidation, charges a liquidation fee, or uses an insurance fund or auto-deleveraging process. These procedures can affect what happens after a trigger and differ by venue and contract. Notifications can help you monitor a position, but they are not a substitute for checking it: a fast move, system or connectivity problem, or a changed requirement may leave too little time to act.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the difference between cross margin and isolated margin?
The names describe how collateral is allocated, but the precise behavior depends on the venue and contract.
| Margin mode | Collateral exposure | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated margin | Margin is assigned to a particular position under the venue’s rules. This can limit which collateral is directly allocated to that position, but it does not make the position loss-proof. | Whether you can add or remove margin, what happens to remaining collateral after liquidation, and whether fees or other account rules can affect funds outside the assigned amount. |
| Cross margin | Eligible account collateral may be shared across positions to support them. A loss or margin shortfall in one position can therefore put more of that shared collateral at risk. | Which balances and positions are included, how unrealized profit and loss is counted, and how the venue liquidates multiple positions or applies margin tiers. |
Do not infer the amount at risk from the mode label alone. Read the venue’s current definitions and liquidation rules for the specific product, especially if you have several open positions or hold collateral in more than one asset.

Which costs and market risks belong in the plan?
A position can lose money even when its margin calculation is correct. Include trading fees, borrowing charges for spot margin, and funding payments for perpetuals. Funding rates and fees vary; consult the live contract and fee information rather than relying on a universal figure. Slippage, thin liquidity, and abrupt price gaps can also make execution worse than the price you expected.
Risks also extend beyond the position itself. The CFTC identifies volatility, flash crashes, manipulation, cyber risks, and weak or absent government supervision among risks in virtual-currency cash markets. A futures contract’s price behavior may differ from spot exposure: a joint SEC/CFTC staff alert about funds trading Bitcoin futures warns that fund returns may not track Bitcoin spot-price movements exactly. That alert addresses funds, not retail perpetual contracts, so its fund-specific discussion should not be treated as a description of every leveraged crypto product. The alert also states that it has no legal force or effect.
Venue and jurisdiction matter. Confirm that the product is available to you, what oversight applies to the venue and product, how customer assets and complaints are handled, and which protections—if any—apply in your jurisdiction. Regulation of a futures product should not be taken to mean that every crypto cash market is supervised in the same way. Exchange documentation can explain that exchange’s mechanics, but it is not independent evidence that the venue is suitable for you.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Can you explain whether the product is spot margin, dated futures, or perpetual futures, and how it borrows, tracks a reference, and settles?
- Have you calculated notional exposure and the initial margin required under the venue’s current rules?
- Have you found the maintenance-margin schedule, including any notional tiers and the possibility that requirements may change?
- Do you know which price reference triggers liquidation and whether liquidation can be partial, incur fees, or involve insurance-fund or auto-deleveraging procedures?
- Have you considered fees, borrowing or funding costs, slippage, liquidity, and the possibility of a rapid move past an intended exit?
- Do you understand whether collateral is isolated to the position or shared across positions, and can you accept losing the full amount exposed under those rules?
