You can make money on Twitch through subscriptions, Bits, ads, and sponsorship opportunities—but access depends on your status, and none guarantees a particular income. Twitch’s nine monetization-related options include both ways to earn revenue and programs or tools that expand access. Here’s what each one does, who may use it, and how Twitch’s payout rules affect what you receive.
How Twitch monetization works
Twitch separates creators into different statuses: all streamers, streamers who complete monetization setup, Affiliates, and Partners. Affiliate and Partner status unlocks additional monetization features. Completing setup alone does not make a non-Affiliate, non-Partner streamer eligible for a cash payout; Twitch describes Spendable Balance as an option for eligible purchases. Affiliate onboarding requires three steps: enabling two-factor authentication, completing account details, and setting up revenue. Twitch says all three must be complete to begin Affiliate monetization. Its Affiliate onboarding guide explains the process. Partner status is a separate application path: Twitch says creators should complete Path to Partner and meet its recent streaming and viewer criteria before applying, but meeting criteria does not guarantee acceptance. Check the Partner Program overview for current requirements.
For every option below, availability and terms can vary with status, region, payment method, and Twitch’s current rules. Twitch also requires creators to follow its Community Guidelines.

How Twitch streamers make money: 9 methods and opportunities
The nine items below are not nine guaranteed or independent income streams. Some are direct viewer payments, some are ad or sponsor opportunities, and some describe access or improved terms rather than a separate way to earn.
1. Paid channel subscriptions
Viewers can pay to subscribe to a channel. Twitch’s Affiliate FAQ describes a standard 50/50 revenue split for Affiliates, before applicable deductions and adjustments. Taxes, processing, bank, and currency-conversion fees can affect the amount, and regional or payment-method differences matter. The split is not a promise that a creator takes home half of every viewer’s displayed subscription price. See Twitch’s Affiliate Program FAQ for its explanation.
2. Gift subscriptions
Viewers can buy subscriptions for other people. Gift subscriptions may be eligible for the enhanced subscription revenue share under the Plus Program, but Twitch says they do not count toward the Plus Points used to qualify for that program. A gift can therefore contribute to eligible revenue without helping the channel reach a Plus qualification threshold.

3. Prime subscriptions
Prime subscriptions are another viewer subscription option, but Twitch’s Plus Program table excludes them from both Plus Points and Plus Program net subscription revenue. Do not count Prime subscriptions toward those specific qualification calculations.
4. Bits and Cheering
Viewers can use Bits to Cheer in chat, supporting a channel through Twitch’s monetized viewer interaction. Twitch identifies Cheering earnings for Affiliates and Partners; the exact amount a streamer earns should not be inferred from a universal per-viewer or per-stream estimate. Twitch describes the feature in its Cheering guide for monetized streamers.
5. Bits-enabled Extensions
Some Twitch Extensions let viewers spend Bits through an interactive feature. For qualifying Bits-enabled Extension use, Twitch says the channel ordinarily receives 80% of one U.S. cent per Bit, while the Extension developer receives 20%. This is a specific distribution for eligible Extension use, not a general rate for all Bits. See Twitch’s Bits in Extensions documentation.

The available documentation does not establish a universal ad rate or reliable income-per-view figure, so an ad estimate should not be treated as a standard Twitch payout.
7. Creator Sponsorship Profile
Twitch lists a Creator Sponsorship Profile among tools for Affiliates and Partners. It can be part of a creator’s sponsorship opportunities, but Twitch’s feature listing does not establish that a deal will be offered, how much it might pay, or what terms apply. Twitch also lists StreamElements Sponsorships for Affiliates and Partners. That listing does not establish current availability, deal volume, expected earnings, or commissions. Check the service’s current terms and your dashboard before relying on it as an income source.

9. Partner status and the Plus Program
Partner status can unlock additional features and support, but it is an access level—not a guaranteed source of income. The Plus Program, meanwhile, can increase qualifying subscription revenue share for eligible streamers. Twitch lists two levels: 60/40 and 70/30 net subscription revenue shares. Qualification requires 100 Plus Points for Level 1 or 300 Plus Points for Level 2 in each of three consecutive months. Recurring paid subscriptions count toward qualification; gift subscriptions do not, although gifts can be eligible for the enhanced share. Prime subscriptions count toward neither Plus Points nor Plus Program net subscription revenue. Twitch also says streamers must adopt the Monetized Streamer Agreement before meeting the qualification criteria. Review The Plus Program for current definitions and rules.

There is no single take-home amount that applies to every subscription. Twitch’s Affiliate FAQ gives a standard 50/50 split, while the Plus Program provides enhanced 60/40 or 70/30 shares to qualifying creators. Those percentages apply under Twitch’s stated revenue-share rules, not automatically to the viewer-facing price in every region or payment scenario. Deductions and regional or payment-method variation can change the final amount.

Can you make money on Twitch without being an Affiliate?
Completing monetization setup does not by itself make a non-Affiliate, non-Partner creator eligible for a cash payout. Twitch’s overview distinguishes setup from Affiliate and Partner status, and describes Spendable Balance as an option for eligible purchases for creators who are not eligible for cash payout. For Affiliate monetization, complete two-factor authentication, account details, and revenue setup; then check Twitch’s current eligibility and dashboard guidance.
When does Twitch pay Affiliates?
Twitch says eligible Affiliates and Partners are generally paid around the 15th after the end of the earning month, provided they have completed payment details and met the minimum balance. Twitch states a $50 minimum for most payout methods and $100 for wire transfer. Processing and arrival times can vary, so the 15th is not a guarantee that funds will appear in a bank account that day. See Twitch’s payout timing page for current details.
