The Federal Trade Commission says assignments can be irregular even for successful models. Your safest approach is to understand how a booking pays, get the terms in writing, and avoid anyone who asks you to pay to get a job.
How models get paid
Payment depends on the assignment, the client, the role, and the permitted use of the images or performance. A written offer may describe an agency commission, a direct booking rate, a session fee, or additional compensation tied to where and how the work is used. Expenses, exclusivity, territory, and payment timing can also affect what you ultimately receive.
There is no general model-income figure that applies across these arrangements. The FTC says modeling assignments and earnings are irregular, and warns that no one can guarantee work or income. Treat any quoted rate as specific to the role and contract—not a promise of regular earnings.
7 ways to make money as a model
These are possible types of work to investigate, not guaranteed opportunities or a complete list. Availability and terms vary by location and client.

1. Agency-booked fashion and photography assignments
An agency may find assignments and receive an agreed share or fee under the applicable terms. Before signing, understand what the agency charges, what services it provides, and when any fee is due. Rules differ by location: US FTC consumer guidance warns against agencies demanding upfront payment for representation, while UK rules for fashion and photographic models allow certain agreed fees after work is found, subject to written disclosure. 2. Freelance and direct-client bookings
You can seek work directly from clients rather than relying only on agency representation. The sources cited here do not establish a standard rate, universal legal terms, or a verified marketplace for these bookings. For your own protection, agree in writing on the work requested, compensation, image or performance usage, expenses, and payment timing before accepting.

3. Commercial advertising
Commercial work can appear on broadcast, social, digital, streaming, radio, and other platforms. For commercials covered by a SAG-AFTRA US agreement, compensation may include a session fee and, for principal performers, use-based compensation. The role and type and duration of use affect the details. SAG-AFTRA says its listed minimums do not limit a performer’s right to negotiate; nonunion work does not automatically follow the same structure. Check the applicable agreement and contract. 4. Promotional and event bookings
Brands and event organizers may hire models for in-person promotional work. The official sources here do not establish typical rates or a current job platform for these assignments. Confirm the client, duties, hours, expenses, and payment terms in writing rather than relying on a promised “typical” rate.

5. Hand modeling and other specialized roles
Some commercial assignments call for a particular feature or skill rather than a full-body fashion presentation. SAG-AFTRA lists hand models among commercial performer roles, but that does not establish general demand or income for hand modeling. Ask what the client needs, how the material may be used, and what compensation applies.
6. Digital and social-media campaigns
A campaign may use a model’s image or performance on social media or other digital channels. The platform alone does not tell you whether the work is union-covered or what it pays. Clarify the role, usage, territory, duration, and any exclusivity in the contract; for covered US commercials, the applicable SAG-AFTRA agreement governs.

7. Print, editorial, catalog, and runway assignments
These are recognizable types of modeling work, but the sources here do not provide current market rates or establish that any route will be available to a particular person. Look for locally relevant opportunities and assess each offer on its written compensation and usage terms.
How to assess an offer before accepting
Compare the actual terms, not just the headline rate or the client’s claims. Ask for the offer and any contract before committing, then check:

- Compensation: Is it an agreed direct rate, agency commission, session fee, use fee, or another arrangement? When is payment due?
- Usage: Where may the client use the images or performance, for how long, and in what territory? Does the agreement restrict other work?
- Expenses and deductions: Who pays for travel or other costs, and what may be deducted from payment?
- Verification: Can you independently confirm the agency, casting contact, and claimed client through contact details you find yourself?
- Written terms: Are promises, fees, duties, and payment conditions documented? Keep copies of contracts and important communications.
For UK fashion and photographic modeling, the government says agencies must disclose relevant fees in writing and cannot charge upfront fees for finding work. Scams often sell certainty—guaranteed work, a guaranteed salary, or access to a job in exchange for money. The FTC says there are no guarantees and advises aspiring models to be cautious about pressure, required services, and promises that cannot be verified.
- Do not pay to get a job. The FTC warns against agencies that demand payment to secure work or charge upfront for representation. SAG-AFTRA says performers should never pay for a job and flags requests for travel or other upfront costs as warning signs. Local rules vary, so check the rules for your location and work category.
- Reject guaranteed work or high earnings. Assignments and earnings are irregular; a promise of a guaranteed job or salary is not a reliable basis for a decision.
- Question required in-house services. Be wary if an agency makes its own photographer, makeup artist, audition service, or other paid service a condition of getting assignments. The FTC says legitimate professionals generally request casual snapshots rather than professional photos for child-model submissions.
- Do not sign under pressure. Research the organization independently, check complaints, ask for references and verifiable placement examples, and confirm current licensing if your state requires it. Get fee terms and promises in writing.
- Verify casting messages independently. SAG-AFTRA warns about impersonators, personal-email addresses posing as official contacts, and requests for purported union fees or other costs. Contact the organization using a phone number or email found through its official site—not contact details supplied in a suspicious message. Its casting-scam warning explains these red flags.
- Be cautious with schools and programs. Modeling schools and programs typically charge in advance; paying for a class is not the same as securing representation or work. Do not accept high-pressure sales tactics or promises of jobs as proof that a program is legitimate.
What to do if you have already paid
Act promptly. Save messages, contracts, receipts, and payment records. In the United States, report suspected fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For an internet-based scam, SAG-AFTRA also points performers to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. If the message claimed to come from a union, verify it through the union’s official contact channel.
