How to Mail Checks Safely—and What to Use Instead

Mailing a check is not risk-free. Use careful check-writing and mailing habits, monitor your account, and consider bill pay, e-check, or ACH when accepted.

If the person or business you need to pay accepts it and the terms suit you, use your bank’s bill-pay service, an e-check, ACH, or another electronic payment instead of mailing a paper check. If you do mail one, conceal it, complete it carefully, use a secure drop-off, and confirm it arrived. These steps reduce exposure; none makes a check theft-proof.

How to mail a check safely

  1. Complete the check carefully. Use black indelible or gel ink. Write the payee’s name and amount in full, and close unused space on the amount line so there is less room for alteration. Do not add your Social Security number, driver’s-license number, phone number, or credit-card details. These precautions are recommended by the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
  2. Conceal the check. Put it in a security envelope or otherwise make the contents hard to see. An envelope protects privacy, but it does not prevent theft or guarantee that a check cannot be copied.
  3. Use a secure drop-off. The FBI and USPIS recommend depositing outgoing mail at a post-office letter slot. If you use a blue USPS collection box, check its posted pickup time and deposit the envelope before the final collection. Avoid leaving outgoing mail in a home mailbox for an extended period.
  4. Keep track of delivery. For important mail, USPS lists Signature Confirmation as an option. Confirmation can help establish delivery, but it does not prevent theft or alteration. Check current service details with USPS before choosing it.
  5. Confirm the payment. Check your bank account and statements for the debit, and confirm the recipient received the payment. Do not assume a mailed check will take several days to come out of your account.

Is it safe to mail a check?

Mailing a check carries a risk that someone could steal it and use the information on it. A thief may change the payee or amount, wash the ink, or copy the check. The FBI and USPIS advise reducing opportunities for theft and making alteration harder, but a security envelope, careful handwriting, and a post-office drop-off cannot guarantee safety.

The scale of the problem is difficult to summarize with a single current rate. A USPIS/ABA announcement attributes a 385% increase in check fraud nationwide since the pandemic to the U.S. Treasury Department, but does not specify the comparison period. Separately, USPIS says it recovers more than $1 billion in counterfeit checks and money orders each year; its page, updated in 2025, does not identify the measurement year, and that figure is not a measure of consumer losses. Neither figure predicts the risk of any one mailed check.

What can you use instead of mailing a check?

First confirm that the recipient accepts the payment method. Then compare the timing, fees and terms shown by your bank or payee, what account information you will share, how easily you can document payment, and whether you need delivery confirmation. No method is established as universally safest or cheapest.

Method What to check
Bank bill pay Confirm whether your bank sends payment electronically or mails a check, when it will be sent, and any applicable terms or fees.
E-check Confirm the payee accepts it, what account information is requested, when the debit is expected, and how you can document payment.
ACH payment or automatic payment Check the authorization terms, timing, and any fees with the bank or payee. For recurring payments, understand how to manage or end the authorization.
Other electronic or mobile payment Check that the recipient accepts the service and review the payment timing, fees, terms, and available confirmation or records.
Mailed check Use the precautions above; allow for the possibility of earlier electronic processing and monitor your account.

A paper check you mail may not be processed as a paper check. The OCC explains that a merchant or utility may convert it into an electronic debit through ACH, which can clear faster than conventional paper processing. The payer usually cannot choose the processing route. Watch your available balance and statement; the OCC says the statement should identify EFT transactions. Its guidance applies to national banks and federal savings associations it regulates, and terms and consumer rights can vary by bank, transaction type, and state. See the OCC’s electronic fund transfer guidance.

How to reduce the risk from incoming mail

  • Pick up mail promptly rather than letting it sit unattended.
  • If you will be away, arrange for a trusted person to collect it or use USPS Hold Mail.
  • If an expected check does not arrive, contact the sender or payee promptly.
  • Review your bank account and statements for unfamiliar or altered transactions, and check available check images.

What to do if a mailed check is missing or altered

  1. Call your bank promptly. If the check has not been cashed, ask whether a stop payment is appropriate. If it was fraudulently cashed, request images of the front and back and work with the bank to identify where it was deposited. Ask whether closing or replacing a compromised account is warranted.
  2. Notify the intended recipient. Let the payee know the check is missing or was altered, and coordinate how to handle the payment so you do not inadvertently pay twice.
  3. Report suspected mail theft. Contact local police and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. USPIS says a report can include the mailing date, time and location; the mail service used; the intended payee; the financial institution where the check was deposited; and images of the altered check. See USPIS reporting guidance.
  4. Keep monitoring the account. Review transactions and statements for further unfamiliar activity and follow your bank’s instructions about the compromised check or account.
