If your federal student loan payment is difficult to manage, sign in to StudentAid.gov, check which repayment plans are available for your loans, and compare their estimated costs with the official Repayment Calculator. If an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan is available and fits your situation, submit the online IDR application. Your servicer will confirm the payment terms after processing it. If your income or family size changes, you can request a recalculation without waiting for annual recertification.
How can I lower my student loan payments?
An IDR plan bases payments on income and family size. In general, a lower income or a larger family can result in a lower monthly payment, but the amount and the plans you can use depend on details such as loan type and when the loans were disbursed. Check your actual loan record and eligible plans rather than assuming that every federal borrower qualifies for the same options. Federal Student Aid’s IDR FAQs explain the eligibility limits and application process.

Start by checking your loans on StudentAid.gov, then compare the available plans using the Repayment Calculator. If you decide to change plans or enroll in an available IDR plan, apply online. The calculator provides estimates; your servicer determines the final terms after it processes your application. Federal Student Aid’s preparation guide also recommends reviewing your loan and repayment information before payments are due.

This process is for federal student loans. It is not a universal payment-reduction program for every borrower, and a lower estimated monthly amount is only one part of the decision. Your first task is to confirm what loans you have and which plans StudentAid.gov identifies as available for those loans. Then compare the costs and timing of the options you can actually choose.

Check whether your loans qualify before choosing a plan
Plan eligibility is not universal. Loan type, disbursement timing, repayment status, and sometimes the history of a consolidation can affect which options are available. A plan name appearing in general guidance does not mean it is available for every borrower.
Review your account details
Sign in to StudentAid.gov and review your loan types, balances, current repayment plan, and repayment status. Use these details when comparing plans; if you enter information into the calculator manually, make sure it matches your actual loans. The Federal Student Aid repayment plans page describes plan availability, while your account can help show options relevant to your record.
Check every loan rather than looking only at your combined balance. If you have more than one federal loan type or a consolidation loan, the mix can affect your options. Make note of any parent PLUS loan, a default status, or a consolidation involving Direct PLUS or parent loans. Disbursement timing also matters, so do not rely only on the date you last borrowed or on a general description of a plan. If anything in your account is unclear, confirm it with your servicer before submitting an application or making a consolidation decision.
Understand the specific restrictions
- Parent PLUS-only loans: These loans are not eligible for IDR as-is. Consolidation may affect possible paths, but it does not guarantee eligibility for a particular plan. Check the rules against your loan history before acting. Federal Student Aid’s IDR FAQs describe the restriction.
- Loans in default: A defaulted loan is not eligible for IDR as-is. Rehabilitation or consolidation may change the options available, subject to the rules that apply to your loans; neither should be treated as an automatic route to a specific IDR plan. Federal Student Aid’s IDR FAQs cover this limitation.
- Direct PLUS or parent-loan consolidation history: This history can constrain later plan choices. Check the plans listed for your actual loans before consolidating or selecting a plan, especially if you are considering a plan with a scheduled end date. Federal Student Aid’s plan information provides the relevant rules.
Do not consolidate or pursue rehabilitation solely because you expect it to unlock a particular payment or discharge outcome. Those steps can change possible paths for some borrowers, but eligibility still depends on the rules for the resulting loan and the plan. Verify the consequences for your specific loan history first.
If a loan is private rather than federal, this federal IDR application is not a way to change its payment. The process here is for federal loans; consult the private lender or servicer about any options it may offer rather than assuming federal plan rules apply.
Compare payment and total cost, not just the lowest monthly amount
Use the official Repayment Calculator to compare estimated eligible-plan options. You can use account data or enter details manually. Federal Student Aid describes comparisons by monthly payment, total paid, and payoff speed; the calculator also provides estimates such as interest, discharge, and payoff date. Its results are not final payment terms: the servicer confirms those after processing your application.
| What to compare | Why it matters | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated monthly payment | Shows the expected payment under a plan and whether it may be more manageable for your current budget. | Compare the estimates for plans that are eligible for your loans; do not assume the calculator’s lowest figure is final. |
| Estimated total paid and interest | A lower monthly amount does not by itself show that you will pay less overall. | Consider the total and interest estimates alongside the monthly amount when choosing. |
| Estimated discharge and payoff timing | These estimates help show how a plan could affect the expected end of repayment or discharge. | Review them when comparing options, particularly if you are planning around discharge or Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). |
| Plan availability and scheduled end | A plan may not fit your loans, and a plan with a scheduled end could affect longer-term planning. | Confirm availability for your loan record and account for the dates described below for PAYE and ICR. |
These are borrower-specific estimates, not general promises about savings. Compare plans using accurate loan and household information, and review the servicer’s resulting terms before relying on a particular payment amount. The calculator’s purpose and estimate limitations are explained in Federal Student Aid’s August 2026 guide.

How to read the calculator results
Start with the monthly estimate to see whether a plan may ease the immediate strain on your budget. Then look at total paid and interest. A plan that lowers the current bill can still have a different overall cost or repayment timeline, so do not treat the smallest monthly figure as a recommendation by itself. The calculator is useful for comparing tradeoffs, not for guaranteeing that a particular option is best for every borrower.
Next, look at the estimated payoff date and any discharge estimate. These figures can help you understand the potential long-term path, particularly if you are considering PSLF or another discharge outcome. They are still estimates. Your actual eligibility and final terms depend on the applicable rules and the servicer’s processing of your application; do not make a discharge plan based solely on an estimate displayed by the calculator.
For a useful comparison, keep the inputs consistent across options and make sure manually entered loan and household details match your records. If an option does not appear to match what you expect, revisit the loan type, disbursement information, and repayment status rather than assuming the calculator or account has confirmed eligibility. The relevant comparison is among eligible plans for your loans, not every plan that exists.
How do I apply for an income-driven repayment plan?
- Sign in and verify your record. On StudentAid.gov, review your loans, current repayment plan, balances, and repayment status. Note any loan type or consolidation history that may affect eligibility.
- Compare the available estimates. Open the Repayment Calculator, use account data or enter your details, and compare the estimated monthly payment, total paid, interest, discharge estimate, and payoff timing for eligible plans.
- Choose an eligible option and submit the online application. Use the IDR Plan Request information and the online IDR application on StudentAid.gov. Apply based on the options available to your loans, not just the name of a plan you have heard about.
- Wait for the servicer’s terms. Review the payment and other terms the servicer sets after processing. Do not treat a calculator estimate as approval or a final bill.
- Save the annual recertification date. Track the date and submit the required recertification in advance, allowing time for processing. Federal Student Aid’s IDR FAQs explain annual recertification.
Applying and receiving a calculator estimate are separate steps. The estimate helps you compare; it does not enroll you in a plan. Submit the online IDR application for an option available to your loans, then wait for the servicer to process it and confirm the terms. Read the servicer’s notice carefully so you know the payment amount and any dates or next actions it provides.
If you are already enrolled in IDR and want a lower payment because your circumstances have changed, the application can also be used to request recalculation. You do not need to wait for the next annual renewal date to ask. This early request does not erase the separate annual recertification requirement, so keep tracking that deadline even if you submit a recalculation request in the meantime.
Request a recalculation if your circumstances change
You do not have to wait for the annual recertification date to ask for a new payment calculation after a material change in income or family size. Use the IDR application to request recalculation and provide the information it asks for. The application process is described in the IDR Plan Request; the servicer determines the resulting terms after processing.
A recalculation request is worth considering when income falls or family circumstances change in a way that may affect the payment calculation. In general, lower income or a larger family can mean a lower monthly payment, although the exact effect depends on the applicable rules and your loan details. Do not assume a change has already altered your bill: submit the request, allow the servicer to process it, and review the new terms it provides.

Keep annual recertification separate from an early recalculation request. Recertification remains an annual requirement for borrowers enrolled in IDR. If you miss the deadline, your payment may increase. Federal Student Aid recommends submitting recertification ahead of time because processing takes time. See the IDR FAQs for the recertification guidance.
Put the recertification date on your calendar and leave time to complete the process before it is due. Do not assume that an earlier recalculation request counts as your annual recertification, or that the upcoming deadline will be moved automatically. If you are uncertain about your specific date or whether a submission is complete, check your account and contact your servicer.
Account for current plan changes
If you were enrolled in SAVE
The SAVE plan ended following a court order on March 10, 2026. If you were in SAVE, follow the notice from your servicer and review the plans currently available for your loans. Do not assume SAVE remains an option or select a replacement without checking your account. Federal Student Aid’s IDR FAQs address the plan’s status.
Use the notice from your servicer as the starting point for what to do next, and check your current account for the options available to your loans. The right next step may depend on loan type, disbursement timing, repayment status, and consolidation history. Compare those available plans with the Repayment Calculator, but rely on the servicer for the terms it sets after processing an application.
If you are considering PAYE or ICR
PAYE and ICR are scheduled to end no later than July 1, 2028. That scheduled end may matter if you are planning for discharge or PSLF, or if your loan history limits later choices. Check your actual eligibility and consider the plan’s expected end date before enrolling; do not assume a currently available plan will remain available indefinitely. See Federal Student Aid’s repayment plan information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThink beyond the payment shown today if you are comparing either plan. Consider how its scheduled end could affect your repayment or discharge planning and whether your loan history may limit alternatives later. The end date is a reason to verify your options and plan carefully, not a reason to assume a particular future outcome. Use the current plan information and your servicer’s guidance for your own account.
Common mistakes that can lead to a wrong choice
- Choosing by monthly payment alone. A smaller estimated bill does not establish a lower total cost. Review the calculator’s total paid, interest, discharge, and payoff estimates as well.
- Assuming every federal loan qualifies. Parent PLUS-only and defaulted loans are restricted as-is, and other loan or consolidation details can affect eligibility. Verify the options tied to your specific record.
- Treating consolidation or rehabilitation as a guarantee. These steps can change possible paths for some borrowers, but the applicable plan rules still control. Check before taking action.
- Waiting for annual recertification after a change. If income or family size changes, you may request recalculation sooner; the annual recertification requirement still applies.
- Missing the annual deadline. Missing it may raise the payment. Record the due date and submit ahead of time so processing can occur.
- Relying on stale plan information. Plan availability changes, and SAVE ended in 2026. Use your current account and servicer notice to confirm the options in effect for your loans.
- Confusing an estimate with an approved payment. The Repayment Calculator compares estimated outcomes. Your servicer sets final terms after processing your application.
- Entering incomplete or inaccurate details. Loan type and disbursement timing affect eligibility, and the calculator’s results depend on the details used. Confirm your account information before comparing manually entered scenarios.
- Assuming a private loan can use federal IDR. This process applies to federal loans. Ask a private lender or servicer about any options for a private loan.
