A successful international storefront aligns each market’s language, prices, payments, shipping, returns, content, and search presence. For most small and midsize merchants, the practical starting point is one Shopify store using Shopify Markets, a subfolder URL, and a carefully reviewed translation workflow. Launch one priority market, test the whole customer journey, then expand based on profitable results.
What Shopify localization includes
These related terms describe different jobs:
- Internationalization means structuring a store to support multiple markets, languages, currencies, and locales.
- Translation converts text from one language to another.
- Localization adapts the complete buying experience to a market, including prices, measurements, shipping, payment, policies, imagery, and support.
- Transcreation rewrites creative material so it has a similar persuasive effect in a different culture.
- Market configuration defines which countries, products, prices, domains, currencies, and shipping options belong together.
A French-language page is not automatically a France-specific experience. France and French-speaking Canada may need different prices, taxes, shipping promises, sizes, policies, and promotions. Likewise, one English translation may serve several countries while each market still needs distinct commercial information.
Depending on the market, localization may cover product names and descriptions, navigation, search filters, SEO titles and descriptions, URL slugs, measurements, tax wording, payment methods, delivery estimates, returns, warranty terms, promotional calendars, product availability, images, email notifications, and customer-service content.
Decide whether a market is ready
Before configuring Shopify, score each proposed market against demand, economics, operations, and service capacity. A translated storefront cannot compensate for poor margins or delivery that customers will not accept.
#1 Best Overall
- Accurate to 0.1oz: High precision for postage, packaging, or food preparation.
- Solid design with high weight limit: 50Lbs
- Smart Tare & Hold Functions: Effortlessly subtract container weight or lock readings for larger boxes.
- Clear LCD Display: Large, backlit screen makes weights easy to read, even in dim rooms.
- Multi-measuring units: Kg, lb/oz, oz
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is there existing traffic or evidence of demand? | Helps prioritize markets with a plausible route to sales. |
| Can the product legally be sold there? | Rules for products, labeling, safety, and imports differ. |
| Can you deliver at an acceptable cost and time? | Shipping costs, customs, and delivery expectations affect conversion and margin. |
| Are returns practical? | Return shipping, local return addresses, and consumer rights can change the economics. |
| Are relevant payment methods available? | Card-only checkout may not meet local expectations, and provider availability varies. |
| Can your team support customers in the language? | Localized sales create expectations for understandable service before and after purchase. |
| Are taxes and duties clear to customers? | Unclear charges can cause checkout abandonment and disputes. |
| Is the product culturally suitable? | Images, claims, sizing, and references may not carry the same meaning everywhere. |
| Is there enough margin after shipping, tax, duties, payment costs, and returns? | Revenue alone does not establish that a market is viable. |
| Can you meet local privacy and marketing requirements? | Consent, privacy, and promotional rules may affect store configuration and campaigns. |
A sensible pilot is one market with existing demand, manageable fulfillment, a language your team can review, and workable payment and returns arrangements.
Choose a store model
One Shopify store with Markets
For many merchants beginning international expansion, one store with Shopify Markets is the simplest operating model. It centralizes the catalog, theme, orders, and analytics while allowing market-specific domains, languages, currencies, and settings. It works best when operations and inventory are substantially shared. Complex legal entities, catalogs, fulfillment, or compliance needs may make a single store less suitable.
Multiple Shopify stores
Separate stores can make sense when countries need different legal entities, inventory, catalogs, teams, checkout requirements, or merchandising. The trade-off is duplicated themes, apps, analytics, content, and translation maintenance.
Headless or custom storefront
A custom storefront may suit businesses with complex regional experiences or enterprise integrations, but it adds development and ongoing testing. It is not usually the default starting point for a small merchant.
Check Shopify requirements and limits
Shopify’s documentation says multilingual selling requires Basic or higher, excluding Shopify Lite, and that the store’s theme must support multilingual selling. Shopify says its free themes are compatible; check with the developer of a third-party theme. Its current help documentation describes support for up to 20 languages per store on eligible plans. Plan entitlements, country availability, and features can vary, so confirm the live Shopify pricing and plan availability for your location.

Shopify Payments is required for selling in multiple currencies through Shopify’s international selling features, and payment availability varies by merchant country. Shopify provides professionally translated options for a defined set of checkout languages; do not assume every language or third-party checkout element is covered. Product translations also do not guarantee that an app, review widget, subscription interface, email, or support tool is translated.
See Shopify’s localization and translation requirements and its international domains guidance for current details.
Set up a localized market in Shopify
Admin labels can change. Shopify’s documented setup uses the following paths:
Recommended Free Tools
- Create or select the market: In Shopify admin, go to Markets, then create or select the market and define its countries or regions.
- Choose the market’s domain structure: Open the market and go to Domain / language, then select Add. Choose a subfolder, subdomain, or separate domain. Connect a separate domain in Shopify’s domain settings first. Shopify says international domains cannot be created from a
myshopify.comdomain. - Add the language: Go to Settings → Languages → Add language, select a language, and save it.
- Assign it to the market: Go to Markets → select market → Languages and domains → Add languages and choose the language.
- Translate and adapt content: Use Shopify Translate & Adapt, a CSV workflow, manual translation, or a compatible third-party app. Have a person review important material before publishing.
- Configure the commercial experience: Set prices and currency where supported, then review payment methods, shipping rates and delivery wording, tax and duty messaging, returns, and policies for the destination.
- Test before publishing: Check the localized storefront, checkout, apps, notifications, mobile layout, and SEO signals. Publish only after critical content and flows work in the target language.
See Shopify’s domains and languages guide, its language-management instructions, and its instructions for setting up international URLs.
Choose a URL structure
| Structure | Example | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subfolder | example.com/fr/ |
A first international rollout with centralized operations. | No additional domain purchase, but market and language mappings need care; changing an established URL structure can require redirects. |
| Subdomain | fr.example.com |
A market with distinct regional branding or infrastructure needs. | Requires additional DNS, analytics, tracking, and SEO management. |
| Country-code domain | example.fr |
A strategically important country where local branding and operations justify a distinct domain. | More domains to buy and maintain, plus additional SEO and redirect work. Some country domains have eligibility rules, and the domain can imply local presence. |
Subfolders are generally the least complex starting point for a merchant using one store. Shopify documents these domain structures and their setup in its Markets domains and languages guide. A country-code domain may support local trust or geographic relevance, but it does not guarantee higher search rankings.

Translate and adapt content with a review workflow
Prioritize what customers need to buy
Translate in order of commercial and customer impact: checkout-critical theme strings; best-selling product pages; high-traffic landing and collection pages; shipping, returns, warranty, and FAQ content; navigation; SEO metadata and slugs; email notifications; then long-tail catalog, blog, and campaign archive content. Include metafields, dynamic content, images, and app content where the tools support them.
Use a glossary and review levels
Maintain a market-specific glossary covering brand terms, product terminology, measurements, tone, formality, prohibited claims, regulatory wording, button labels, capitalization, gender and pluralization, and local search keywords. Decide which names, model numbers, trademarks, technical standards, and official product terms should remain unchanged.

- Machine translation: Useful for internal discovery or low-risk draft content, not a substitute for review.
- Machine translation plus bilingual review: A practical workflow for standard product and marketing pages.
- Professional translation and appropriate legal review: Use for claims, warnings, warranties, privacy, returns, contracts, regulated products, and healthcare-related content.
- Native-market copywriting: Prefer for brand campaigns, humor, idioms, headlines, and culturally sensitive messages.
Shopify Translate & Adapt supports translation and market-specific adaptations such as different product descriptions, promotional banners, legal text, and localized media for supported resources. Shopify describes automatic translation as a starting point that should be reviewed and refined; see its Translate & Adapt app documentation.
Know what can remain untranslated or unsupported
Do not blindly translate brand names, model numbers, trademarks, official standards, customer-entered information, or URLs relied on by integrations. Shopify notes that product, article, and blog tags cannot be translated, and the fixed word products in Shopify URL structures cannot be translated even when a product slug can be localized. Check the resource and app rather than assuming every field is translatable. See Shopify’s localization considerations.
Shopify tracks translation states as translated, outdated, or untranslated. Product edits, theme updates, new apps, and campaign changes can leave content outdated. Assign an owner to review those states regularly. If important translations are missing, Shopify may display primary-language content, creating a mixed-language experience; treat that as a launch blocker for critical pages.
Localize currency, prices, payments, shipping, and returns
Make the price understandable
A currency symbol alone is not a localized price. Review conversion and market-specific rounding, decimal and thousands separators, tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive display, duties, shipping charges, refunds, and the currency used for authorization and settlement. Customers should be able to tell what they will pay, whether taxes and duties are included, whether shipping is extra, and whether their card issuer might charge a conversion fee. Shopify’s multiple-currency features require Shopify Payments for the relevant international selling setup; availability depends on merchant location. See Shopify’s international domains guidance.

- Digital tabletop postal scale for quickly and precisely weighing items
- Includes a shipping postal scale and AC adapter; made of durable black ABS, aluminum, and iron
- 65 pound (30kg) capacity reads to 0.1 ounce (1g) in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 0.2 ounces (5g)
- Extra large LCD display for easy viewing; measuring units in ounces, pounds, g, and kg
- Tare function for resetting the scale to zero after setting a container on the platform; great for net weights
Offer payments that fit the market
Check cards, digital wallets, bank transfers, buy-now-pay-later services, local methods, and cash on delivery where it is operationally viable. Consider fraud screening, chargebacks, 3-D Secure, and which payment methods appear for each country. Never assume a provider or method is available everywhere: confirm eligibility and language behavior for your own business and target country using Shopify’s current plan and availability information.
Explain fulfillment before checkout
State destination-specific shipping costs, delivery ranges, cutoff times, business days, tracking, customs documentation, restricted products, and whether import duties are paid at delivery or included. Make return address, return cost, exchange handling, warranty service, and applicable consumer rights understandable before purchase. Shopify’s language and market settings do not replace tax, customs, logistics, or legal advice.
Build a durable translation-app workflow
Shopify Markets and Translate & Adapt may be enough for a store with a small number of languages and a manageable review process. A CSV workflow can suit a team working with translators or version control, but it needs careful handling to avoid mismatched or overwritten content. Third-party apps may add translation management or coverage for particular resources, but they can introduce separate costs, synchronization work, and compatibility limits.
| Approach | Consider it when | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Markets plus Translate & Adapt | You want a native workflow for a modest number of markets and can review content. | Whether all resources and app content you need are supported. |
| CSV translation workflow | Translators or editors need bulk files, external review, or version control. | Import/export coverage and safeguards against mismatches or overwrites. |
| A compatible translation app | You need broader resource, URL, metafield, image, or third-party-app capabilities. | Checkout, app blocks, subscriptions, email, language limits, usage charges, and synchronization with Shopify. |
| Professional localization service | Content is regulated, high-value, legally sensitive, or brand-critical. | Who approves terminology, maintains updates, and reviews local compliance. |
Shopify requires third-party translation apps to be compatible with multilingual selling. An app may translate Shopify resources while leaving third-party content partly or wholly untranslated. Test the exact app features your store relies on rather than relying on a general claim of whole-store translation.

Theme and app behavior can undo otherwise sound market configuration. Shopify recommends using localization-aware theme features rather than hardcoded internal URLs. Hardcoded paths such as /cart can send a shopper to the default market or language context. Developers should use Shopify’s routes object for internal links, the localization Liquid object, and {% form 'localization' %} for selectors. See Shopify’s theme guidance for multiple currencies and languages and its Markets theme documentation.

Test app blocks and integrations for reviews, subscriptions, bundles, search and filters, size guides, shipping bars, personalization, loyalty, wishlists, recommendations, cart drawers, customer accounts, returns portals, email and SMS, cookie banners, consent management, and checkout extensions. Confirm that the selector preserves the customer’s choice and that language and currency remain aligned as the customer navigates.
For Arabic, Hebrew, and other right-to-left languages, test the theme rather than assuming text direction alone is enough. Navigation, galleries, icons, forms, price blocks, mixed-direction product codes, and mobile layout may all need attention.
Make international SEO useful, not just technically valid
Shopify says configured Markets can automatically provide key international SEO signals such as hreflang, canonical URLs, sitemaps, and crawler access. Those features reduce technical setup work; they do not guarantee good translation, useful local keywords, correct market assignment, or indexing. See Shopify’s international SEO guidance and its hreflang documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For each market, use a distinct, indexable URL where appropriate, localized titles and descriptions, meaningful slugs where supported, local keyword research, and internal links to relevant content. Avoid thin machine-translated pages or near-duplicate market pages with no useful adaptation. If a URL structure changes, plan redirects and check existing indexed URLs.
- Open the localized URL in a private browser and confirm it resolves successfully.
- Inspect page source for hreflang values and confirm they reflect the intended language and region.
- Check that the canonical points to the appropriate URL.
- Review the sitemap and test redirects, removed products, and language-selector links.
- Use Google Search Console to monitor the localized pages, impressions, clicks, and indexing.
- Check for missing translations and confirm users and crawlers can access alternate versions.
Use location detection without overriding customer choice
Automatic redirects based on location or browser language can send travelers to the wrong market, frustrate multilingual households, hinder access to other versions, or create consent concerns. Shopify documents special considerations for automatic domain and browser-language redirection, including consent-based localization requirements for certain European Union configurations. A visible selector or a dismissible suggestion is generally safer than an irreversible redirect. Review the current Shopify international domains and redirection guidance, preserve explicit customer choices, and test for redirect loops.
Test every important path before launch
Use a test matrix that covers desktop and mobile, a new and returning visitor, a direct localized URL and homepage entry, language and country switching, currency, and the following transactional cases:
- Products with variants, discounts, out-of-stock status, and market restrictions.
- Search, filters, product forms, cart updates, and checkout.
- Address validation, shipping-rate calculation, payment success and failure, and refund behavior.
- Customer accounts, order confirmation, shipping notifications, and support content.
- Review widgets, subscriptions, bundles, returns tools, consent banners, and other app content.
- Missing translation, unpublished product, and right-to-left layout where applicable.
Expected results: the chosen language persists during navigation; the market, currency, products, and prices match; shipping options fit the destination; checkout does not unexpectedly revert to the default language; notifications use the intended language where supported; no critical mixed-language messages remain; localized URLs are stable; and the selector does not loop.
Measure whether localization is working
Report results by market and language, not just across the whole store. Track sessions, organic impressions and clicks, conversion and add-to-cart rates, checkout completion, average order value, revenue and gross margin, shipping cost per order, payment failure, returns, support contacts, translation-related complaints, localized search performance, repeat purchases, and email engagement.
Judge expansion by profitable, repeatable sales after fulfillment, payment, support, returns, and localization costs—not by translated-page count or traffic alone. Use results from the first market to decide what to fix before extending the workflow to the next one.
