Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTell customers early that your store is open, give them a verified route and entrance, and keep those directions aligned with each construction phase. First confirm access, parking, pickup, and delivery details with the road project team; then publish the same current information wherever customers look.
Get confirmed access details before you publish directions
Roadwork plans can change by phase, so do not base customer directions on an old map, a navigation app, or an assumption that the usual entrance remains available. Ask the project contact for the facts customers and suppliers need, and request updates as the work progresses. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) notes that agency notices can explain traffic, duration, and foreseeable disruptions, and that businesses can raise special needs.

- Whether pedestrians can reach the business and which entrance or driveway is usable.
- Customer parking, curbside pickup, and any temporary parking arrangements.
- Delivery routes, timing restrictions, and any alternate loading area.
- A named project contact and a way to receive phase or schedule updates.
FHWA lists options businesses may request, including roadway entrance signs, temporary access points, alternate parking, a single agency contact, and regular project reports. These are requests to discuss, not guaranteed services; feasibility and approval depend on the project and the responsible agency. See FHWA’s business access guidance.
How do I get to the store during road construction?
Give people a route they can follow, not just a general assurance that access is available. Name a familiar cross street or turn, identify the usable driveway or door, and say where to park or pick up an order. A simple map can make a complicated detour easier to understand. WisDOT recommends maps that show alternate routes, and MnDOT recommends sharing maps on doors, social media, and mailings.
#1 Best Overall
- Made in the USA with durable 15oz fluorescent safety orange woven mesh
- Includes standard orange fiberglass roll-up sign cross ribs for a 48” sign
- Sturdy corner pockets to fit cross ribs
- Easy to setup and take down for maximum portability and effectiveness
- Compatible with sign mounts and universal sign and roll-up brackets (sold separately)
Make the route match the current phase. MnDOT cautions that navigation apps may not use the official detour, so tell customers to follow your verified directions and posted project signs rather than relying on an app alone. The exact routing and access arrangements must be confirmed locally.
Is the store still open?
Say so plainly and prominently. Use a concise storefront sign for people already nearby, then repeat the message on your website or business listing, in email, on social media, and in staff responses. A short open-status statement paired with the route is more useful than a reassurance without directions.

Channels serve different purposes, so keep one source of truth and repeat its current details consistently:

|---|---|---|
| Storefront sign | Reach people at or near the site; visible at the decision point. | “Open” status, the usable entrance, and a brief directional cue. |
| Website or business listing | Carry more route detail and a map; can be refreshed as access changes. | Current route, parking or pickup details, map, and last-updated date. |
| Reach existing customers and share a fuller explanation. | What changed, when it applies, and where to find current directions. | |
| Social media | Share timely updates and keep a current post easy to find. | Short directions, a map or link, and a clear update date. |
MnDOT provides sample “doors are open” wording and notes that official detour guidance may differ from what appears in navigation apps. Its approach to detour signs is specific to Minnesota: MnDOT says it directs drivers to business areas rather than listing individual businesses. WisDOT, by contrast, describes temporary business signs subject to agency guidelines. Neither policy should be assumed to apply elsewhere. See MnDOT’s business roadwork guidance and WisDOT’s temporary business sign information.

Coordinate customer parking, pickup, and deliveries
Access planning should cover more than customer cars. Confirm delivery routes and time windows with the project team, then pass the verified plan to suppliers and staff. If the regular entrance is restricted, ask whether an alternate entrance or temporary access point is feasible. Where conditions allow, identify a clear customer parking or curbside pickup location and include it in the map and directions.
Tell customers about restrictions only when the project team has confirmed them. Do not promise that a driveway, sidewalk, parking area, or loading point will remain usable if its status is uncertain.

Keep every channel current at each construction phase
- Before work begins: Identify the project owner and contact. Request the schedule, phase map, access and parking arrangements, delivery rules, and expected changes. Attend a public meeting if one is offered. Prepare a brief FAQ and map using confirmed facts, and plan how the notice will appear on signs, online, in email, and on social media.
- When a phase changes: Reconfirm the route and entrance with the project contact. Update the map and all customer-facing messages together, including signs, listings, and any pinned social post. Put an “updated” date on the digital notice, and send the revised directions to staff and suppliers.
- If access on the ground does not match the notice: Report a blocked or misleading route to the contractor or project contact promptly. Update customer directions after the access facts are verified.
- After construction: Announce that work is complete and invite customers back. Share improvements only after they are confirmed; MnDOT also suggests a post-project celebration and feedback to the agency.
FHWA recommends regular project reports, and the City of Toronto advises businesses to subscribe to updates and refresh signage as required. Subscribe to the project’s updates and keep the project contact’s details with the current map. See Toronto’s road construction and businesses guidance.

Coordinate signs with the responsible authority
Storefront signs can tell nearby customers that the business is open, but signs on public roads, in the right-of-way, or on construction barriers raise separate permission and safety questions. Ask the project contact or local government which signs are allowed, where they may be placed, and whether approval is required before installing anything in those locations. Rules vary by agency and jurisdiction.
Best Value
- WORK ZONE SIGN: Orange mesh sign made to alert oncoming drivers and pedestrians to construction or work zones
- QUICK & EASY SETUP: Supported by durable fiberglass ribs for stability; rolls up for compact storage with included velcro strap
- LARGE DISPLAY: Big, easy-to-read format meets visibility needs from long distances
- MEETS MUTCD STANDARDS: Meets manual on uniform traffic control devices requirements. NCHRP-350 approved sign perfect for all types of work zone/construction projects

A weather-resistant open or directional sign may be useful on the business’s own property if placement is permitted. It cannot replace a verified route or make an inaccessible entrance usable.
