Instructions and prompts make expectations clearer, but they are not a technical lock: no prompt guarantees that every assistant or harness will preserve tests.
Start with a baseline you can compare against
Before asking an assistant to change application code, check the working tree and run the project’s canonical test command yourself. Record the exact command, its result, and any failures or skipped checks. This gives you evidence to distinguish a newly introduced problem from a failure that was already present.
Microsoft’s VS Code repository-customization guidance recommends keeping track of changed files, tests run, failures or skips, and corrections during a representative baseline task. The useful principle is broader than VS Code: make the starting state observable before delegating.
- Check whether the working tree already contains changes; preserve or commit work you may need to recover.
- Run the test command the project actually uses, rather than assuming a generic command will cover it.
- Note existing failures and skipped checks so they are not later attributed to the assistant.
Set a narrow scope and make test edits explicit
Describe the application-code change in concrete terms. Separately identify protected tests and related files—such as test directories, fixtures, snapshots, and test configuration—and ask the assistant to explain why any change to them is necessary before making it. Require review and approval for a proposed test change.

This is a project rule, not an access restriction. An assistant may still be able to write to those files unless the selected tool or environment enforces a boundary. Microsoft’s VS Code guidance cautions against assuming that a role description limits tool access.
Put recurring guidance where the assistant can find it
For a rule you expect to apply repeatedly, add concise repository guidance in the instruction-file location recognized by the selected assistant or harness. Include the project structure, canonical test command, relevant conventions, and the requirement to seek review before modifying tests.

Instruction discovery differs between harnesses, so a file that works for one may not be read by another. Microsoft recommends starting with a repeatedly observed, project-specific problem, adding the smallest useful customization, and confirming that the chosen harness applies it. Do not treat repository instructions as a substitute for permissions.
Use tool permissions when the boundary matters
If an unintended write would be costly, reduce what the assistant can do rather than relying only on wording. Available controls depend on the product, its version, and how it is configured. The examples below describe official product documentation accessed October 3, 2026; check current documentation before relying on a particular default or command.

| Product | Documented control or behavior | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot CLI | GitHub documents --available-tools to limit the available tools and --allow-tool and --deny-tool to permit or block tools and subcommands. GitHub says deny rules take precedence over allow rules. |
Use the narrowest useful tool set and deny rules for actions you do not want available. Exact CLI syntax is version-sensitive; broad all-tools options are documented for isolated environments. |
| Claude Code | Anthropic describes a permission-based model that is read-only by default for modifications and most commands, and documents sandboxing for filesystem and network access. | Review the permissions and sandbox boundaries for the actual environment. Filesystem isolation and network isolation address different exposures; neither proves that a test is correct. |
| Cursor | Cursor documents that workspace edits can be saved immediately without approval, except for configuration files, while terminal commands require approval by default. It describes run modes as best-effort guardrails rather than a hard security boundary. | Do not assume every workspace edit will wait for confirmation. Keep recoverable version control and review changes as they are made. |
These are product-documentation examples, not the results of an independent, head-to-head security evaluation. Controls and defaults can change. Anthropic also reported an 84% reduction in permission prompts from internal Claude Code usage in an article published October 20, 2025. That vendor-reported figure concerns prompt frequency—not test preservation, defect rates, or independently measured safety.
Ask for a plan before broad or multi-file changes
For a multi-file refactor or another change with a wide blast radius, use a planning or preview workflow if the harness supports one. Anthropic’s Claude Code help guide describes a plan mode in which the assistant lists intended files and changes before editing, with edits held until plan approval. A plan gives you a chance to catch an unexpected test-file change before it happens; it does not establish that the eventual code is correct.

Review the full diff before accepting the work
Inspect the complete change against the recorded starting point, not just the assistant’s summary. Pay particular attention to test code, fixtures, snapshots, test configuration, and generated files. Confirm that the application change stays within scope and that any proposed test edit was specifically reviewed and approved.
- Check which files changed and whether any protected path was touched.
- Look for removed assertions, weakened expectations, deleted cases, or changed test setup.
- Check whether fixtures, snapshots, configuration, or generated output changed, and whether those changes are justified by the requested behavior.
- Use version control to discard or recover changes you did not intend to keep.
Cursor’s documentation notes that workspace changes may save immediately and recommends version control as a recovery measure. That is why a clean or otherwise recoverable starting point and diff review matter even when terminal commands require approval.

Rerun tests and report exactly what happened
After reviewing the edits, run the relevant tests again—starting with the project’s canonical command recorded at baseline. Report the exact command and outcome, including failures and skipped checks. If an approved fix changes code, rerun the affected tests afterward. A summary that says “tests pass” is not a substitute for saying which command ran and what it did.
Microsoft’s VS Code guidance emphasizes tracking commands, test results, failures, and skips. Anthropic’s documented test workflow likewise includes rerunning tests after an approved fix. These steps provide evidence about the final state; they do not guarantee that unrun tests or untested behavior are sound.
A prompt to adapt for your repository
You can use this as a starting point, replacing the bracketed details with the project’s real paths and command:
First inspect the repository instructions and identify the canonical test command. Before editing, report the files you expect to change and confirm whether any tests, fixtures, snapshots, or test configuration would need modification. Preserve the existing tests unless I approve a specific test change. Make only the requested application-code change. Afterward, show the full diff, run the canonical test command, and report the exact command and result, including failures or skipped tests.
