There is no single verified fix for every report of high CPU, memory use, disk activity, or slowdown on a device running CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor. Start by recording the symptom and its timing, identifying the affected host’s operating system and sensor version, and comparing it with a similar unaffected host. Then check for changes in workload, software, policy, or platform configuration before changing protection settings. CrowdStrike’s public deployment-script diagnostics can help establish system and installation context, but they are not performance profilers.

A disciplined investigation matters because a performance complaint can have several overlapping causes. A sensor update, operating-system change, application release, scheduled workload, policy edit, or ordinary resource contention may all occur near the same time. Treat the sensor as one variable to test rather than assuming it is responsible. Preserve the original state, make one controlled change at a time, and escalate with precise version and timing information when local evidence does not identify a cause.

What to capture before changing anything

First define the problem in terms that can be checked again. “The computer is slow” is a useful report of an experience, but it does not identify whether the issue is CPU, memory, disk activity, latency, battery impact, or a particular application. Preserve an initial measurement before altering policy or sensor configuration so you can compare later observations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Host and platform: record the affected host through your organization’s approved process, operating system and exact release, architecture, and Linux kernel version where applicable.
  • Falcon details: record the installed Sensor version, how the host receives updates, and any relevant policy context available to your administrators.
  • Symptom: state the observed resource metric or user-visible effect, the process or workload involved, and whether the host was idle or busy.
  • Timing: note when the issue began, when it occurs, how long it lasts, and whether the timing is repeatable.
  • Recent changes: list sensor, operating-system or kernel updates; application or workload releases; policy edits; and other host or infrastructure changes near the onset.

When possible, compare the affected device with an unaffected one that has a similar role and workload. A comparison is most informative when the hosts are observed under similar conditions; differences in load, platform, sensor version, or policy can otherwise obscure the pattern. The public CrowdStrike material cited here does not prescribe a profiler, measurement threshold, or benchmark for deciding that a given resource level is abnormal.

Use a case worksheet

A short worksheet prevents details from being lost between the help-desk report and an escalation. Give the case a unique identifier, record the time zone used for timestamps, and separate observations from assumptions. For example, “interactive build job took 18 minutes at 14:10 UTC while Falcon process CPU rose” is an observation; “Falcon caused the build delay” is a hypothesis that still needs testing. Record who supplied each observation and whether it came from a user, a monitoring system, or an administrator.

Capture the normal comparison as well as the outlier. Note whether the unaffected endpoint has the same application build, data set, network path, power state, and policy assignment. If those conditions cannot be matched, document the differences so a support engineer can judge how strong the comparison is. Keep the first measurement unchanged in the case record even if later testing makes the symptom disappear.

Distinguish the resource being affected

CPU saturation, memory pressure, storage activity, and application latency can produce similar user complaints but require different evidence. A CPU complaint should identify the interval and the process or workload that coincided with it. A memory complaint should note whether the problem was sustained pressure, paging, or a single application growing over time. A disk complaint should describe the operation and time window, while a battery complaint should include the power state and the activity being performed. Do not convert a subjective report into a numeric diagnosis unless the measurement method and conditions are known.

How to establish host and sensor context safely

CrowdStrike’s official Linux and Windows installation-script documentation describes redacted debug output that can provide useful environment and installer information. Use it to enrich the investigation, not to infer that the sensor caused the performance symptom: these are deployment-troubleshooting diagnostics, not CPU or memory traces.

Linux

The Linux script’s documented debug example is FALCON_DEBUG=1 ./falcon-linux-install.sh. Its redacted output can report the operating system, architecture, kernel, package manager, installer selection and integrity details, API request outcomes, sensor version, and AID. The documented command is part of installation-script troubleshooting; use the official script and instructions appropriate to your deployment rather than treating it as a general-purpose profiling command. See CrowdStrike’s Linux install and uninstall script troubleshooting documentation.

Use the output to verify that the host’s identity and software context match your case record. For example, an unexpected kernel or package-manager value may explain why two endpoints that appear similar are not actually comparable. An installer integrity or API-status detail can help explain an incomplete deployment, but it does not establish that an installation detail caused a later performance event. Preserve the output with the command, script version, and collection time.

Windows

The Windows PowerShell script supports the documented redacted debug mode with -FalconDebug. The output can include the operating-system and PowerShell versions, sensor query and installer choice, API call status, installed version, and AID. CrowdStrike notes that the version is resolved from policy or a query rather than re-read from the binary. Add the switch only in the context of the official script invocation and deployment instructions; do not guess at an invocation that differs from your environment. See CrowdStrike’s Windows PowerShell install and uninstall script troubleshooting documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check that the version and policy context in the log correspond to the endpoint and tenant under investigation. A script choosing an installer or resolving a version tells you about deployment logic, not how much CPU or memory the running sensor consumed. If the endpoint has changed policy since the event, retain the historical context if your organization can retrieve it through approved systems.

Protect diagnostic output

Follow your organization’s rules for collecting and sharing logs. Redacted debug output is preferable to indiscriminate command tracing, but it is not a reason to publish host identifiers or other sensitive details. CrowdStrike’s Linux container-pull guidance warns that bash -x can expose credentials and authorization headers; avoid enabling shell tracing casually. Review collected material and redact sensitive host details before sharing through an approved channel.

Store the original file in the approved location, restrict access to personnel working the incident, and create a separate redacted copy for collaboration. Check command history, copied output, and screenshots as well as the main log; secrets can appear outside the file you intended to share. If credentials or authorization headers were exposed, follow your organization’s incident procedure rather than simply deleting the log.

How to compare likely causes

Use the timeline and host comparison to identify what the issue tracks. A correlation is a lead to test, not proof of cause. If the same workload triggers a symptom across hosts, examine workload context; if affected machines cluster around a platform or sensor release, gather that exact version information for current vendor guidance.

Comparison What to check What the result can tell you
Affected versus unaffected hosts Role, workload, timing, operating system and release, kernel where relevant, sensor version, and policy context. Whether the symptom appears associated with a shared host or configuration difference. A difference alone does not establish cause.
Before versus after a change Sensor, OS or kernel update; application release; workload change; policy edit; or host configuration change, aligned with symptom timestamps. Which changes merit further investigation or version-specific guidance.
Workload and time window Process or workload involved, host load, recurrence, duration, and the metric that changed. Whether the complaint is tied to a repeatable workload or interval rather than being a general impression.
Platform and configuration Exact OS and sensor release, applicable settings, and whether comparable systems use the same setup. Whether a platform-specific configuration question needs to be checked against current documentation.

These comparisons are a practical investigation framework, not a CrowdStrike-published performance matrix. The public sources do not establish numeric thresholds, known-issue mappings by sensor version, or a universal remedy.

Reproduce without creating a second incident

If the symptom is repeatable, write down the workload and stopping condition before asking a user to reproduce it. Use a maintenance window or test endpoint when possible, and avoid changing production protection merely to make reproduction easier. Repeat the same workload on the affected and comparison hosts, keeping the observation period and power or network conditions as similar as practical. If the event is intermittent, record several occurrences rather than treating one quiet interval as proof of resolution.

Do not run unrelated updates, policy changes, and application tests at the same time. Each additional change makes the result harder to interpret. If a restart, rollback, or other operational action is necessary, record its exact time and expected effect. A symptom that disappears after a restart is a changed observation, not evidence of a permanent fix.

How platform configuration affects the investigation

Falcon configuration is not uniform across operating systems. CrowdStrike’s Ansible configuration role covers Linux and macOS and supports Windows with fewer options. It documents Linux-specific falconctl controls, including trace and message logging. The presence of a control does not mean it should be enabled to fix high CPU or another performance complaint. Confirm that a setting applies to the host’s OS and installed sensor release, and check current vendor guidance for its use and impact before changing it. See CrowdStrike’s Ansible falcon_configure documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trace and message logging can change the amount of diagnostic data generated and may affect storage or operations. Treat them as diagnostic controls with a defined owner, duration, and collection destination, not as an always-on remedy. Record the prior state so it can be restored. If the documentation for the installed release differs from an older procedure, use the current release-specific instructions.

For managed Linux and macOS deployments, distinguish installing the sensor from configuring it. CrowdStrike says its Ansible install role alone is insufficient for a fully operational deployment and directs administrators to run the configuration role after installation. That is relevant when checking incomplete or inconsistent setup; it does not establish that missing configuration causes high CPU use. See CrowdStrike’s Ansible falcon_install documentation.

Platform Documented investigation detail Important limit
Linux Installer debug output can report OS, architecture, kernel, package manager, installer details, sensor version, and AID. The configuration role documents Linux-specific falconctl controls. Installer diagnostics are not performance profiling, and settings must be verified for the installed release.
macOS The Ansible configuration role covers macOS; the install role says to run configuration after installation for a fully operational Linux or macOS deployment. The cited script debug details are documented for Linux and Windows, not as a macOS performance profiler.
Windows PowerShell script debug output can provide OS and PowerShell versions, installer/query context, API status, sensor version, and AID. The configuration role supports Windows with fewer options than Linux and macOS; applicability is release- and platform-specific.

Check deployment consistency

For a fleet-wide complaint, compare how endpoints were installed and configured, not only what version they report. A Linux or macOS host that received the install role but not the required configuration role may not match a fully configured peer. Record that distinction as a deployment fact and ask whether the tenant’s intended configuration was applied. Do not label the difference a performance cause without a controlled comparison or vendor guidance.

On Windows, document the policy and installer path used by the affected group because the configuration role exposes fewer options than it does for Linux and macOS. A cross-platform procedure copied from one operating system to another can produce an invalid or irrelevant test. Always verify option names, supported values, and side effects in the documentation for the installed release.

Why broad exclusions are a risky first response

CrowdStrike documents several exclusion classes: IOA, machine learning, sensor visibility, and certificate-based exclusions. Its exclusions documentation describes API scopes and management operations; it does not recommend exclusions as the default response to performance complaints. An exclusion changes security configuration, so adding one simply to see whether a symptom changes can reduce protection without identifying the cause. See CrowdStrike’s exclusions documentation.

If your organization approves a controlled exclusion test and current CrowdStrike guidance supports it, document the suspected cause, the narrow scope, the owner and approval, the before-and-after measurement, and a rollback plan. Do not disable protection or apply a broad exclusion as a generic performance fix. A change that coincides with improvement is evidence to investigate, not by itself proof that the excluded item was the cause.

Choose the smallest testable object and shortest approved duration, and make sure the exclusion’s type and scope are understood before applying it. Note whether it affects a file, path, certificate, indicator, or other control area, and record which policy receives the change. Verify removal after the test and confirm that the endpoint returned to its intended protection state. If the symptom remains, remove the exclusion rather than expanding it reflexively.

A repeatable investigation and escalation sequence

  1. Define the symptom. Identify the metric or user-visible effect, workload or process context, time window, duration, and host load. Save an initial observation before making changes.
  2. Build the host record. Capture the OS and release, architecture, kernel where relevant, Falcon Sensor version, update context, and relevant policy information using approved internal procedures.
  3. Find a meaningful comparison. Compare with an unaffected host of similar role under similar workload conditions. Record differences rather than assuming the sensor is the only variable.
  4. Align the timeline. Check whether the start of the symptom coincides with a sensor, OS/kernel, application, workload, policy, or infrastructure change.
  5. Collect applicable diagnostics. If useful for deployment context, follow CrowdStrike’s official script documentation for the platform’s redacted debug mode. Keep logs within organizational handling rules and do not treat them as a performance trace.
  6. Verify configuration before editing. Check the current Falcon documentation for the host’s operating system and exact sensor release. For managed Linux or macOS systems, confirm that installation and the required configuration role are both accounted for.
  7. Test only an approved, narrow change. Preserve the original measurement, define scope and rollback in advance, and compare the same symptom under similar conditions. Avoid simultaneous changes that make results hard to interpret.
  8. Escalate when evidence does not isolate a cause. Use your organization’s CrowdStrike support channel and current authenticated documentation when the issue remains unclear or appears product-related.

Decision points during the sequence

If only one workload on one host is affected, first verify the workload, host configuration, and timing before changing tenant-wide policy. If many comparable hosts show the same event after a shared update, preserve the common version and deployment facts and seek version-specific guidance. If symptoms span operating systems but share a workload or policy, investigate that common factor. If symptoms are confined to one platform, keep the platform and release details together in every escalation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop local experimentation when the endpoint is at operational risk, when protection would need to be disabled, or when repeated changes have produced contradictory results. Restore the last approved configuration, document what happened, and escalate with the evidence collected. There is no benefit in accumulating broad exclusions or undocumented tuning that makes later diagnosis harder.

What to include when contacting support

Prepare a concise evidence packet through approved secure channels. Include the affected host identifiers only as permitted by your organization, OS and kernel details, Falcon Sensor version, symptom measurements and timestamps, comparison-host findings, recent changes, relevant policy context, and applicable redacted diagnostics. State what was changed during investigation and the observed result. The cited public sources do not specify an authoritative support checklist, response-time commitment, or version-specific performance issue matrix, so follow the support process available to your organization rather than assuming one.

Arrange the material in a timeline: first report, first measurement, each change, each reproduction attempt, and the current state. Include the time zone and indicate whether timestamps came from the endpoint, a management console, or another system. Explain what is missing, such as an unavailable comparison host or an event that could not be reproduced. This helps support distinguish a product question from an environmental difference.

For general deployment-script context, CrowdStrike also maintains a deployment scripts overview. A decision about whether a particular configuration change is safe for a specific tenant, platform, and sensor release requires current vendor documentation or tenant-specific support guidance.

How to interpret vendor performance language

CrowdStrike’s product datasheet search result contains the sentence, “Minimal CPU overhead restores systemperformance and end-user productivity.” Treat that as vendor marketing language, not as an independent test result. The result supplies no numeric performance figure or test conditions, and the concatenated wording “systemperformance” should be checked against the underlying datasheet before quoting it directly. It cannot serve as a threshold for deciding whether an endpoint’s CPU use is abnormal.

No named performance statistic with a figure, original publishing organization, year, and applicable test conditions is established in the official material reviewed for this topic. Do not fill that gap with a generic benchmark or a number from a different platform. Use the endpoint’s own baseline and a comparable host, then ask CrowdStrike for version- and tenant-specific information when the evidence points to a product issue.

Cost and tooling considerations

This investigation does not establish a requirement to purchase sensor hardware, accessories, a repair utility, or a physical manual. The useful work is evidence collection, comparison, configuration review, and support escalation using approved enterprise processes. Avoid recommending unrelated consumer computers, cables, or cleanup tools as a remedy for Falcon Sensor performance complaints.

Likewise, do not assume that a third-party optimizer or generic “repair” application is safe for an endpoint-security agent. Such software can change services, exclusions, or files and may destroy evidence. If specialized monitoring is already approved in your environment, document its version and collection settings; if it is not approved, use the organization’s established telemetry rather than introducing an unreviewed tool during an incident.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is CrowdStrike Falcon using so much CPU?

The available public material does not establish one universal cause or CPU threshold. Record when the increase occurs, the workload and process involved, the host’s OS and sensor version, and recent changes. Compare with a similar unaffected host before changing policy, then use current CrowdStrike guidance or support if the pattern remains unexplained.

How do I troubleshoot Falcon Sensor high memory or disk use?

Define the resource and time window, preserve an initial observation, and note whether the endpoint was idle or performing a specific workload. Compare the same conditions on a similar host, check sensor, operating-system, application, policy, and infrastructure changes, and collect only approved diagnostics. The documented deployment scripts provide context; they are not memory or disk profilers.

Can I run the Linux debug script to find the performance bottleneck?

No. FALCON_DEBUG=1 produces redacted installation and environment details such as OS, architecture, kernel, package manager, API outcomes, sensor version, and AID. It does not provide a CPU or memory performance trace. Follow the official script instructions and protect the resulting logs.

What does -FalconDebug do on Windows?

The documented PowerShell debug mode reports deployment context including OS and PowerShell versions, sensor query and installer choice, API status, installed version, and AID. CrowdStrike notes that the version is resolved from policy or a query rather than re-read from the binary. Use the switch only with the official script invocation for your environment.

Should I add a Falcon exclusion to stop the slowdown?

Not as a default response. CrowdStrike documents IOA, machine-learning, sensor-visibility, and certificate-based exclusion classes, but does not present exclusions as a general performance remedy. Use one only for an approved, narrow, measured test supported by current guidance, with an owner and rollback plan.

Does installing the sensor complete a Linux or macOS deployment?

CrowdStrike’s Ansible documentation says the install role alone is insufficient for a fully operational Linux or macOS deployment and directs administrators to run the configuration role afterward. Check that distinction when investigating inconsistent setup, but do not treat missing configuration as proof of high CPU use.

When should I contact CrowdStrike support?

Escalate when comparison and timeline checks do not isolate a cause, when symptoms cluster around a specific sensor or platform release, or when a proposed change could weaken protection. Include approved host identifiers, OS and kernel, sensor version, metrics and timestamps, comparison results, recent changes, policy context, and redacted diagnostics.

Is there an official Falcon performance benchmark or fix threshold?

The cited public material does not provide a numeric benchmark, universal threshold, version-specific issue matrix, or authoritative performance escalation checklist. Use consistent measurements from the affected and comparison hosts and request exact-version guidance through your organization’s authenticated CrowdStrike channel.

The Bottom Line

Investigate Falcon Sensor performance as a controlled comparison: define the symptom, preserve a baseline, capture exact host and sensor context, align the timeline with workload and configuration changes, and use documented redacted deployment diagnostics only for installation context. Avoid broad exclusions and undocumented tuning. When the evidence does not identify a safe cause or points to a product issue, escalate with precise versions, timestamps, comparison results, policy context, and redacted logs.
