How to Invest in the Space Industry Through Public Companies and ETFs

Public-market space investing comes down to individual listed-company shares or ETFs. This guide explains how each route works, what to verify, and why thematic funds can still be concentrated.

There are two public-market routes into the space industry: buy shares of a listed company, or buy an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that owns a basket of securities. A stock gives you direct, company-specific exposure. An ETF can spread exposure across issuers, but a narrow space fund may still be non-diversified and heavily weighted to a few companies, sectors or countries. The practical decision is therefore not simply “stock or ETF”; it is which business exposure, portfolio construction, costs and risks you can verify from current filings and holdings.

What investing in the space industry through public markets actually means

Public-market space investing means purchasing securities that trade on an exchange through a brokerage account. The security may represent a company whose operations include launch vehicles, spacecraft, satellites, communications, Earth observation, navigation, space-derived data or related infrastructure. It may also be an ETF whose mandate includes several of those activities.

News coverage can mention a private company, a contractor or a subsidiary without creating a security that you can buy. Before treating any name as investable, verify a current listing, ticker, share class and issuer filing. An industry connection alone is not proof that a company’s shares are publicly available.

Route 1: Buy individual shares of a listed space-related company

What you own

When you buy an individual share, your result is tied primarily to one issuer. Its revenue mix, financing needs, cash position, launch or manufacturing execution, regulatory approvals, customer concentration and future share issuance can all affect the investment. A company may have a large space business while also operating in other industries, so read the latest annual report and earnings filings rather than relying on a ticker description.

How to check that a company is actually listed

  1. Find the issuer’s current investor-relations page and its latest regulatory filing.
  2. Confirm the exchange, ticker, share class and whether the security is common stock, a depositary receipt, a warrant or another instrument.
  3. Read the business description to determine what percentage of activity is genuinely space-related and what comes from other segments.
  4. Review financial statements, debt maturities, cash needs, outstanding share counts and any disclosed risks specific to launches, satellites, government contracts or spectrum.
  5. Check your broker’s security details immediately before placing an order. A symbol can change, be suspended or refer to a different class in another market.

SpaceX as a dated example of why share-class details matter

A public-offering prospectus approved by BaFin on June 5, 2026 identifies SPCX as SpaceX’s Nasdaq symbol and describes separate Class A and Class B shares. The filing states that each Class A share carries one vote while each Class B share carries ten votes. That difference can affect control and should be read alongside the offering terms, eligibility and exchange access available to you. The prospectus is available at SpaceX’s June 5, 2026 prospectus. It documents an offering and a symbol; it does not by itself establish that every brokerage customer can purchase the shares or that they are suitable for a particular investor.

Placing a stock order

  1. Fund a brokerage account that supports the relevant exchange and security type.
  2. Search the exact ticker and verify the company name, exchange, currency and share class.
  3. Choose an order type. A market order prioritizes execution but can fill at an unexpected price in a volatile or thinly traded stock; a limit order sets the highest price you will pay or the lowest price you will accept.
  4. Review the estimated value, commission (if any), currency conversion charge and trading hours.
  5. After execution, confirm the filled quantity and price in the trade confirmation. Keep the issuer’s filings available for subsequent monitoring.

A single stock can be simpler to understand than a fund only if you are willing to monitor one issuer closely. It also removes the fund-level expense ratio, but it does not remove brokerage costs, bid-ask spreads, corporate actions or the risk that one company’s technology or financing plan fails.

Route 2: Buy a space-focused ETF

How ETF trading works

An ETF owns a portfolio and issues shares that trade throughout the day. You buy or sell those shares in a market transaction through a broker. The trading price can be above or below the portfolio’s net asset value (NAV), especially when markets are moving or the underlying holdings are less liquid. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) advises investors to read the fund’s summary prospectus and full prospectus, including its objective, strategy, risks, costs and performance information. Its February 23, 2023 bulletin states: “Carefully read all of the fund’s available information, including its summary prospectus and full prospectus.” See the SEC ETF bulletin.

  2. Open the issuer’s current product page and download the latest summary prospectus, statutory prospectus and shareholder report.

  5. Compare the ETF’s market price with its NAV, recent premium or discount history and bid-ask spread before trading.
  6. Submit a limit order if controlling the maximum purchase price is more important than immediate execution. Confirm the fill and retain the trade confirmation.

“Space ETF” is not one standardized category

Each fund defines its opportunity differently. The actively managed Tema Space Innovators ETF (NASA) says it normally invests at least 80% of net assets in publicly listed companies engaged in its defined space-related business. Its prospectus definition uses a revenue threshold and includes launch systems, spacecraft, satellite communications, Earth observation, GPS-related activity and space-derived data. It can also include products used on Earth when they are intricately linked to space. This is a prospectus definition, not a universal industry standard.

The Procure Space ETF (UFO) seeks results that correspond generally to the S-Network Space Index. The VanEck Space ETF (WARP) seeks to track the MarketVector Space Index and describes exposure to launch systems, satellite infrastructure, Earth observation and space data. NASA’s active selection process, UFO’s index rules and WARP’s index methodology are different. Their tickers do not make them interchangeable.

Fund Selection approach Dated fee or portfolio information What to investigate
Tema Space Innovators ETF (NASA) Actively managed; normally invests at least 80% of net assets in publicly listed companies meeting its prospectus definition of space-related activity. The summary prospectus dated April 23, 2026 reported 0.94% total annual operating expenses before a specified waiver or reimbursement and 0.87% after it. The stated waiver arrangement runs at least through June 28, 2027, subject to its conditions. Revenue-based eligibility, active security selection, acquired-fund or special-purpose-vehicle expenses, non-diversified status and aerospace and defense exposure.
Procure Space ETF (UFO) Seeks investment results that correspond generally to the S-Network Space Index. The SEC-filed semiannual report covers the six months ended April 30, 2026 and identifies the fund as non-diversified. Index rules, current holdings, issuer concentration and risks tied to satellite manufacturing, launch, operations and the environment.
VanEck Space ETF (WARP) Seeks to track the MarketVector Space Index. The sponsor page displayed a 0.50% total expense ratio on October 12, 2026. Holdings dated October 9, 2026 listed 22 positions; SpaceX represented 22.51% and Rocket Lab 14.53% of net assets on that date. Index methodology, current top weights, geographic and sector exposure, fund size, spread and whether the present concentration fits your plan.

What the WARP portfolio snapshot shows

As of October 9, 2026, WARP’s holdings page listed SPCX, RKLB, ASTS, ECHO, VSAT, GSAT, IRDM, PL, MDA, RDW, FLY and other positions among 22 holdings. The page reported 83.73% of net assets in U.S. holdings and 48.44% in Communication Services as of September 30, 2026. Those are time-stamped portfolio weights, not permanent characteristics or a buy list. The 22.51% and 14.53% top positions also demonstrate why counting the number of holdings is not enough to judge concentration.

The comparison framework that matters more than a ticker

Question Why it matters
What counts as space-related? Eligibility may depend on a revenue threshold, an index classification or an active manager’s judgment. The answer determines whether the portfolio is pure-play or includes adjacent communications, defense or data businesses.
How many holdings are there? A larger count can reduce dependence on one issuer, but top positions may still dominate returns. Check each weight rather than relying on the count.
Is the fund diversified or non-diversified? Non-diversified status can permit greater exposure to individual issuers. A thematic fund can remain narrow even when it owns several companies.
How is the portfolio managed? Index tracking follows stated rules and rebalancing; active management relies on the manager’s selection process. Compare turnover, reconstitution dates and any permitted derivatives or other vehicles.
Where are the holdings located? Country and currency exposure affect regulation, market access, taxes and geopolitical risk. A U.S.-heavy portfolio is not equivalent to a global one.
What businesses generate revenue? Launch, satellite operations, defense contracts, navigation, data and terrestrial communications have different customers, capital needs and failure modes.
What does it cost to own and trade? Expense ratios, waivers, acquired-fund expenses, spreads, commissions, currency conversion and premium or discount effects all reduce results.

Fees: look beyond the headline expense ratio

The NASA prospectus’s 0.94% figure was the total annual operating expense before the specified waiver or reimbursement, while 0.87% was the figure after that arrangement. The prospectus says the waiver runs at least through June 28, 2027, subject to its conditions; it is not a promise that the post-waiver number will remain unchanged indefinitely.

WARP’s sponsor page displayed a 0.50% total expense ratio on October 12, 2026. Treat that as the figure shown on that date, not a guaranteed future cost. The SEC fee bulletin explains that fund expenses reduce returns and that some trading costs are not included in the prospectus fee table.

  • Operating expenses: the annual percentage charged by the fund, normally reflected in NAV rather than billed separately.
  • Waiver or reimbursement: a temporary or conditional reduction that may expire or be revised.
  • Acquired-fund expenses: costs from other funds or vehicles the ETF owns, when disclosed.
  • Bid-ask spread: the difference between the price available to buy and the price available to sell.
  • Premium or discount: the amount by which the ETF’s market price differs from NAV.
  • Brokerage and currency costs: commissions, exchange fees or foreign-exchange charges imposed by your account provider.

Does an ETF remove the risk of owning space companies?

It can reduce dependence on one company compared with buying only that company, but it does not make a narrow theme broadly diversified. NASA’s prospectus classifies the fund as non-diversified, describes concentration in certain industries and notes meaningful aerospace and defense exposure. UFO’s report also identifies it as non-diversified and discusses satellite-company concentration plus manufacturing, launch, operational and environmental risks.

Shared industry risks can affect many holdings at once. Launch failures or delays, satellite damage, spectrum or regulatory decisions, high research and manufacturing costs, government-budget changes, supply-chain problems and the need for repeated capital raises can pressure several companies simultaneously. A basket can spread issuer-specific shocks without eliminating these common risks.

A practical due-diligence checklist before you buy

  1. Define the exposure you want. Decide whether you are seeking launch providers, satellite communications, Earth observation, navigation, space data or a broader aerospace mix.
  2. Verify investability. Confirm the live ticker, exchange, share class and broker access from current issuer or fund documents.
  3. Read the primary filing. For a stock, review the latest annual and quarterly filings. For an ETF, read the summary prospectus, full prospectus and most recent shareholder report.
  4. Map concentration. Record top-five weights, number of holdings, sector and country allocations and any non-diversified classification.
  5. Measure total cost. Note the expense ratio and waiver end date, then estimate spread, commission, currency and premium or discount costs for your trade.
  6. Check liquidity. Look at typical trading volume, spread and the liquidity of the underlying holdings. Avoid assuming that a popular theme always trades tightly.
  7. Separate facts from forecasts. Industry growth estimates, contracts or lower launch costs do not guarantee profits or share-price gains. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results, as the WARP page itself cautions.
  8. Set a monitoring rule. Decide how often you will recheck filings, holdings, fees, share count, debt and the fund’s investment objective.

How to choose between an individual stock and an ETF

An individual stock may fit when

  • You can explain the company’s revenue sources, financing plan and principal operational risks.
  • You accept that one issuer can dominate the outcome.
  • You need exposure to a particular business that a fund does not hold or holds only lightly.
  • You are prepared to monitor filings, share issuance, governance and execution.

An ETF may fit when

  • You want several issuers in one transaction and accept that the fund’s definition may include adjacent industries.
  • You prefer an index or active manager to select and rebalance holdings.
  • You have checked that the fund is not so concentrated that it defeats your diversification objective.
  • You understand the expense ratio, spread, premium or discount and any waiver conditions.

Neither route is automatically appropriate. The correct comparison is between the actual security, its documents, its concentration and its costs—not between a company’s headline and an ETF’s ticker.

Important limits on what public-market space investing can tell you

A public listing does not validate a technology, guarantee government demand or establish a fair valuation. Likewise, an ETF’s inclusion rules do not certify that every holding is a pure-play space company. Treat contracts, launch schedules, revenue projections and industry forecasts as claims to verify in filings, not as assured returns.

Use current documents because exchange access, holdings, fees, waivers, share classes and issuer status are volatile facts. The SEC and fund sponsors can update filings after the dates cited above. Recheck the live prospectus and holdings page immediately before trading and after material portfolio changes.
