India’s clean-energy boom offers several ways to participate, but investing in a company or fund is not the same as installing rooftop solar or switching to an electric vehicle. Each route has different risks, costs and goals—and the investments made by wealthy families are not evidence that a particular option suits you.
What the rich-list headline does—and doesn’t—tell you
Mint reported on 6 October 2026 that the M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026 identified ten established business groups moving into solar, wind and other clean-energy businesses. The named groups were Gautam Adani and family, Mukesh Ambani and family, Aditya Birla, Torrent, JSW, INOXGFL, RPSG, Mahindra, Welspun and O.P. Jindal. Mint associated Adani with Adani Green Energy and Adani New Industries, and Ambani with Reliance New Energy. These are business activities and wealth-list figures, not a retail investment recommendation. (Mint)
According to Mint’s account of the list, Gautam Adani and family were valued at ₹9,22,800 crore and Mukesh Ambani and family at ₹8,63,400 crore. Those amounts describe wealth attributed to the families by the ranking; they do not indicate how much either family invested in a particular green-energy asset. The underlying list was not independently reviewed here. (Mint)
India’s renewable-energy projects also draw on a mix of private developers’ equity and borrowing. In a 7 December 2023 release, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said most projects were being set up by private developers selected through transparent bidding. It described equity sources such as private equity, developers’ own funds and venture capital, and debt from banks and institutions including IREDA, PFC and REC. Choose the kind of participation you want
Before choosing a product, decide whether your goal is potential financial returns, lower household electricity costs, lower transport costs, or some combination. Shares, mutual funds and bonds expose you to financial-market risks. Rooftop solar and an EV are household purchases whose value depends on how you use them and what they cost to install or run.

Investing through listed shares
Mint names Adani Green Energy, JSW Energy, NTPC, Inox Wind, Suzlon, solar-panel manufacturers, Reliance Industries and Larsen & Toubro among companies relevant to green-energy exposure. These examples span different business activities; they should not be treated as a list of pure-play renewable companies or as recommendations. (Mint)
A share gives you exposure to one company’s results and valuation, not simply to the growth of clean energy as a whole. Mint notes risks including volatile share prices, policy changes, land delays and high debt. Before buying, review the company’s current filings, business mix, balance sheet and project pipeline, and consider whether a single-company position fits your overall portfolio. Using mutual funds or ESG funds
Mint cites ICICI Prudential Energy Opportunities Fund and SBI Energy Opportunities Fund as examples of energy-oriented funds. It says these can cover traditional energy as well as a shift toward renewables. Fund names, mandates and portfolios can change, so check the latest scheme documents and holdings before investing; the examples are not endorsements. (Mint)

If your priority is broad diversification rather than a targeted energy position, compare the fund’s concentration and holdings with your existing investments.
ESG funds are another category, but an ESG label is not a guarantee of pure-play renewable-energy exposure. Read the investment objective and portfolio rather than assuming that the label tells you exactly which businesses the fund owns. (Mint)

What green bonds can—and cannot—show you
Government green bonds are one way public borrowing can support eligible green infrastructure. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy reported that about ₹16,000 crore was raised through sovereign green bonds in FY 2022–23, of which ₹6,186 crore was dedicated to renewable energy. The same ministry release relayed a Central Electricity Authority draft National Electricity Plan estimate, dated 31 May 2023, of ₹20.67 lakh crore in funding requirements for solar and wind generation projects during FY 2022–2032. Rooftop solar: a household asset, not a market investment
Residential rooftop solar may reduce electricity purchases, but the economics depend on the system, installation, household consumption and local rules. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy says residential consumers apply through the National Portal or a State DISCOM portal. Its programme description says assistance follows successful installation by an empanelled vendor and verification by the State DISCOM. (MNRE rooftop solar programme)
The MNRE page says the Phase-II scheme ran until 31 March 2026 and links to PM Surya Ghar materials. Because that stated period has passed, do not rely on older subsidy amounts or assume the same process or eligibility still applies. Check current PM Surya Ghar guidance and your local DISCOM’s requirements before committing to an installer or budgeting for assistance. (MNRE rooftop solar programme)
Mint reported subsidy figures of up to ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW and ₹78,000 for 3 kW, along with installation-cost and recovery estimates attributed to Moneycontrol. These are secondary-source figures and should not be treated as current entitlements or guaranteed payback. Confirm scheme rules, state-specific applicability, quotes and expected household generation before making a decision. (Mint)

Electric vehicles: compare your own running costs
An EV is a transport decision, not an investment in a renewable-energy company. Its household economics depend on purchase price, annual distance, charging access, electricity and fuel costs, maintenance, and how long you keep the vehicle. Mint reported that EV running costs can be around 70% lower than petrol vehicles, but that comparison was not independently verified and should not be read as a universal saving. (Mint)
A practical decision checklist
- For securities or funds: decide how much market risk and sector concentration you can accept, and assess the option alongside your broader finances rather than buying because wealthy families are investing in the industry.
- For bonds: distinguish a historical issuance record from a live offer or secondary-market listing; check the current instrument terms and availability.
- For rooftop solar: check current central and state rules, portal and DISCOM steps, vendor eligibility, installation costs and the system’s fit for your home.
- For an EV: compare total ownership and charging costs using your actual travel pattern, not a headline percentage.
- For any route: understand whether your aim is financial return or lower household bills. They involve different commitments and are not interchangeable.
Mint frames green-infrastructure investing as potentially requiring a five-to-ten-year perspective because projects can take years. Treat that as broad context from the article, not a universal recommended holding period; each investment’s liquidity, terms and risks differ. (Mint)
