You can invest in cryptocurrency by buying crypto directly through a platform or by choosing an exchange-traded product that provides exposure. Before either route, decide whether you can afford a substantial loss, understand what you would own, and choose how it will be held. Crypto assets are not interchangeable, and risk and legal or tax treatment depend on the asset, transaction, custody arrangement, platform and jurisdiction. This guide is general education for U.S. readers, not individualized financial, legal or tax advice.
Can you afford the risk?
Start with your finances, not a coin or an exchange. The SEC warns that crypto asset securities can be exceptionally volatile and speculative, with significant risk of loss. The CFTC also cautions that virtual-currency trading carries risks, particularly when leverage is involved. An investment can fall sharply, and you could lose all the money you put into it. Do not use money needed for essential expenses or near-term commitments, and do not treat potential returns as assured.
There is no universally appropriate amount or allocation for every investor. Consider crypto only with money you can afford to lose after accounting for your financial priorities and tolerance for large swings. A recurring purchase schedule may spread out when you buy, but it does not prevent losses or make a risky asset safe.
Which route gives you the exposure you want?
| Route | What you hold or access | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Direct purchase | Crypto assets bought through a platform; the platform may hold them or you may move them to a wallet you control. | You must assess the asset, platform, fees, withdrawal terms and custody arrangement. |
| Exchange-traded product (ETP), including an ETF | A financial product that provides exposure under its own structure; it is not the same as directly owning crypto. | Read the product disclosure for its structure, fees, custody arrangements and investor protections. |
| Futures or options | Derivative contracts rather than a straightforward spot purchase. | These are complex products. Leverage can magnify losses as well as gains, so they are generally not a simple substitute for direct ownership. |
Investor.gov identifies exchange-traded products, including ETFs, as one way investors gain crypto exposure. The specific products available and their terms can change; compare the current disclosure for any product you consider rather than assuming it tracks or holds crypto in the same way as another product.

How do you assess a platform?
There is no single platform recommendation that fits every reader. Availability, supported assets and services, and regulatory status can vary by jurisdiction and change over time. Check the platform’s current terms for the specific service you plan to use.
- What it supports: Confirm that your jurisdiction, intended asset and transaction type are supported. A platform may offer different services under different terms.
- Total costs: Review purchase or trading charges as well as deposit, withdrawal, transfer and custody fees. A low headline trading fee does not necessarily mean a low total cost.
- Access to your assets: Check withdrawal limits, timing, supported networks and any circumstances in which withdrawals may be restricted.
- Custody and security: Find out who controls the private keys, how assets are held, what account-security options are available and what happens after a security incident.
- Provider and service status: Check the entity responsible for the particular service and what regulatory status it claims for that service. Do not assume that a platform’s name or one regulated function establishes the status of all its activities.
The SEC’s 2023 investor alert describes conflicts and risks that can arise when exchange, broker-dealer and custody functions are combined. Treat that as a reason to understand which entity performs each function, not as a blanket statement about every platform’s current registration or legal status.

Where will you keep crypto you buy directly?
A crypto wallet manages private keys or passcodes used to access crypto assets; the assets themselves remain on a blockchain. With self-custody, you control the credentials. With third-party custody, a provider controls access to the private keys. A wallet and an exchange are therefore not the same thing, even when a company offers both functions in one account.
| Choice | Convenience and access | Main risks to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party custody | The provider manages access to the private keys, which may simplify account access and transactions. | You depend on the provider’s security, operations and ability to process withdrawals. Hacking, insolvency, closure or restrictions can affect access to assets. |
| Hot wallet (internet-connected) | Software-based access is convenient for frequent transactions. | Internet connectivity creates exposure to cyberthreats, phishing and account compromise. |
| Cold wallet (typically offline) | May reduce exposure to online attacks; physical versions can include dedicated devices, drives or paper. | Less convenient, and a device or recovery information can be lost, damaged or stolen. Losing access can permanently prevent access to assets. |
Investor.gov’s December 12, 2025 bulletin describes these custody approaches and the questions retail investors should ask. A hardware device does not guarantee safety: protecting the recovery information and avoiding mistakes remain essential. Hot wallets may initially be free, while physical cold-wallet devices cost money; transactions can involve fees with either type.

If a provider holds the keys
Ask who controls the assets, how they are held and what happens if the provider is hacked, closes or enters bankruptcy. Review annual asset-based charges, transaction and transfer fees, account-opening or closing fees, and the exact withdrawal terms. A provider’s ability to display a balance does not by itself answer what rights or access you would have if the provider could not operate normally.
If you control the keys
Keep private keys and seed phrases secret, use a strong unique password and multifactor authentication where available, and be alert to phishing messages or websites. Think through how you would preserve and recover access if a device were lost or damaged. Someone who obtains your credentials may be able to access your assets, while losing the credentials may leave you unable to access them.

Are crypto interest or yield accounts the same as bank deposits?
No. In a February 14, 2022 bulletin, the SEC warned that crypto interest-bearing accounts are not the same as deposits at a bank or credit union, and that crypto assets sent to these companies are not currently insured as bank deposits. The bulletin explains that a company may lend or otherwise use deposited crypto, adding counterparty and insolvency risks. Because the warning is dated, verify any current provider, product terms and claimed protections directly before relying on them. Do not treat an advertised yield as guaranteed or assume deposit insurance applies.
What U.S. legal and tax questions should you check?
The SEC announced a crypto-assets interpretive release on March 17, 2026; the related release page lists March 23, 2026 as its effective date. In an April 22, 2026 explainer, the SEC said securities laws apply to securities, including crypto assets when they are securities, and that a non-security crypto asset may be offered or sold subject to an investment contract. This is U.S. federal securities-law context, not a determination that every token is a security or that every crypto transaction has the same legal treatment. The interpretation does not resolve every legal or market question, and laws in other countries may differ.
