Crypto assets are speculative and can lose some or all of their value. There is no universally appropriate beginner allocation, guaranteed return, or risk-free way to invest. If you decide to proceed, understand what you are buying, compare direct ownership with exchange-traded products, plan how access will be protected, and keep records for taxes.
Start with your finances and your ability to absorb a loss
Before considering a crypto investment, look at your broader financial situation: emergency savings, high-interest debt, goals, time horizon, and how much you could lose without derailing essential plans. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy puts the central rule plainly: “The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely.” SEC investor alert, March 23, 2023.
Crypto is not one uniform investment. Assets can differ in design, purpose, and risks, and an exchange-traded product is not the same thing as holding a token directly. Consider how any exposure fits alongside diversified investments rather than treating a single crypto asset as a complete portfolio. Official investor guidance does not establish a percentage that is right for every beginner.
Choose how you want exposure: direct ownership or an exchange-traded product
Direct ownership and an exchange-traded product can both provide exposure to crypto prices, but they involve different ownership, custody, and product risks. The SEC bulletin consulted here discusses bitcoin and ether ETPs; it does not establish that an equivalent product is available for every crypto asset. Check the official documents for the specific product to understand what it owns, what rights you receive, and how it operates.

| Consideration | Direct crypto ownership | Exchange-traded product |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | Crypto assets held through a platform or wallet. | A security or other exchange-traded product intended to provide exposure to an asset’s price. Confirm structure and rights in its official documents. |
| Custody and access | You must decide how the assets and private keys are managed, including whether a third party or you control the keys. | Avoids some direct wallet and key-handling responsibilities, but relies on the product and its service providers. |
| Risks | Price volatility, platform and custody risks, and the possibility of losing access. Crypto platforms may lack important protections. | Still speculative and potentially volatile, with risks tied to the product and its service providers. |
| Costs | Check current trading, custody, transfer, and account charges. | Review current product and account disclosures for applicable fees and charges. |
| Tax records | Keep records of acquisitions, sales, exchanges, fees, and receipts. | Keep relevant transaction and account records; review current tax rules for the activity and year. |
Neither route insures you against investment losses. The SEC’s guidance on bitcoin and ether ETPs explains that these products remain speculative and have product-specific risks. SEC ETP bulletin, September 9, 2024.
If you buy crypto directly, understand custody before you act
A crypto wallet does not store the crypto itself; it stores the private keys or passcodes that control access to it. As the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance states, “Crypto wallets do not store crypto assets themselves; instead, they store the ‘private keys’ or passcodes for your crypto assets.” SEC custody bulletin, December 12, 2025. Losing or exposing those credentials can create serious access and security problems.

Depending on your arrangement, a platform or custodian may control the keys, or you may control them yourself. Third-party custody brings reliance on the provider; self-custody makes protecting credentials and avoiding mistakes your responsibility. A hardware wallet is one possible key-management tool, not a safeguard against price declines, phishing, user error, or every other risk.
Before using a platform or wallet, review its custody arrangements, security practices, withdrawal and transfer terms, and current fees. The SEC recommends asking about annual asset-based, transaction, transfer, setup, and closure fees. Protect private keys and seed phrases, use strong passwords and multifactor authentication, and never share recovery credentials with someone who contacts you unexpectedly. SEC custody bulletin.

Recognize scam pitches and verify claims independently
Be especially wary of anyone promising guaranteed or risk-free returns, pressing you to act urgently, impersonating a legitimate person or organization, or using an online relationship to steer you toward an investment. Fraudsters may try to build trust before asking for crypto or directing you to a platform they control. Crypto scam losses can be difficult to recover.
- Reject claims of guaranteed profits, “risk-free” trading, or easy wealth.
- Do not let urgency or personal pressure replace independent checks.
- Verify people and firms using official contact details and channels you find independently—not links or phone numbers supplied by a promoter.
- Do not assume a platform is safe because someone recommends it or because a website looks professional.

Understand U.S. federal tax and recordkeeping responsibilities
For U.S. federal tax purposes, digital assets are treated as property. Selling or exchanging digital assets, among other transactions, can have tax consequences. The result depends on the transaction and applicable rules for the tax year, so consult current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional for your circumstances. IRS frequently asked questions on digital asset transactions.
Keep transaction records, including dates, amounts, fees, and information about acquisitions, sales, exchanges, and receipts. Broker information reporting is being phased in; a missing form does not by itself mean you have no reporting responsibility. Check the IRS’s current digital assets guidance and the rules that apply to the relevant tax year.

A practical beginner checklist
- Review your finances. Consider savings, high-interest debt, investment goals, time horizon, and the loss you could tolerate.
- Learn what the exposure is. Understand the asset or product’s design, what you would own, and the risks attached to it.
- Compare the route. Weigh direct ownership and its custody decisions against an exchange-traded product’s structure, service-provider reliance, fees, and risks.
- If buying directly, investigate custody. Review the provider, key control, withdrawal and transfer terms, security practices, and all applicable charges.
- Protect your access. Use strong passwords and multifactor authentication, and keep private keys and seed phrases confidential.
- Reject pressure and promises. Verify any person, firm, or claim through independent official channels.
- Keep records. Save transaction details and check current IRS requirements for the activity and tax year.
