Re:

How to Integrate UPI Payments Into a Fintech App

UPI integration starts with choosing the right role: TPAP onboarding through a sponsor bank or merchant acceptance through an acquiring bank. Here’s how to plan the flow, partner requirements and operations.

To integrate UPI into a fintech app in India, first decide whether your product will operate as a third-party UPI app provider (TPAP) or accept UPI payments as a merchant. A TPAP should approach a sponsor bank, which helps raise its onboarding request. A merchant should work with an acquiring bank for UPI payment infrastructure. The route, supported payment flow, compliance work and technical implementation depend on that bank relationship; NPCI’s public material does not establish a universal self-service API or a standard implementation timeline.

Choose the right UPI integration route

“Integrate UPI” can describe two different product roles. Decide which one applies before estimating engineering work or approaching partners. NPCI’s FAQ distinguishes onboarding a TPAP from a merchant integrating UPI acceptance.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Your product’s role Route described by NPCI What the route means
Third-party UPI app provider (TPAP) Approach a sponsor bank The sponsor bank helps raise the TPAP onboarding request.
Merchant accepting UPI from customers Partner with an acquiring bank The acquiring bank provides UPI infrastructure; the merchant discusses supported integration modes with it.
Issuer linking a full-KYC prepaid payment instrument (PPI) to UPI Check issuer and TPAP eligibility NPCI says full-KYC PPIs can be linked through PPI issuer UPI apps and TPAPs under extant RBI interoperability guidelines.

These roles are not interchangeable. A merchant adding a way for customers to pay is not automatically becoming a TPAP, and a TPAP onboarding request is not the same thing as merchant acquiring. If the product combines an app and merchant acceptance, map each activity separately and ask the bank partners which relationship and approvals apply to each one.

When the product is a TPAP

Start by identifying a prospective sponsor bank and explaining the intended app, users and UPI functions. NPCI’s FAQ says a TPAP should approach a sponsor bank; the bank helps raise the onboarding request. That is the public, high-level onboarding direction—not a guarantee of eligibility, approval or a direct route to production. Ask the sponsor bank for its current onboarding criteria and implementation material.

Before the conversation, be ready to describe the app’s purpose, who will use it and what UPI capability the product is meant to offer. Distinguish the product’s intended participant role from the payment flow a user will experience: those are related planning questions, but the role determines which partner route NPCI describes. Let the sponsor bank identify the current application, review and technical steps rather than treating a general description of TPAP onboarding as an approval checklist.

When the product accepts customer payments

Contact an acquiring bank and describe the checkout experience you want to support. NPCI identifies QR, intent, application-based and collect as merchant integration modes. The bank must confirm which are available for your merchant setup, what implementation it supports and what onboarding and operating conditions apply.

Be precise about where payment begins and what the merchant needs to know afterward. For example, a business that wants customers to scan a QR should discuss a QR flow; a product that starts checkout in its own app should ask whether an intent or another supported mode fits. These are questions for the acquiring bank, not a guarantee that every mode is available in every merchant arrangement.

When a PPI is involved

NPCI says a full-KYC PPI can be linked to UPI through PPI issuer UPI apps and TPAPs, under RBI interoperability guidelines. That statement does not establish that every fintech or PPI can use every flow. An issuer should verify its eligibility and obligations with its partner and the applicable current rules before designing the feature.

In particular, do not read this high-level statement as a blanket permission for a fintech to issue a PPI, link any prepaid balance or support every UPI use case. The FAQ excerpt does not set out the precise capabilities or obligations for a particular issuer. Ask the relevant issuer and bank to confirm which entity performs each role and what current requirements apply.

Understand the payment flows before designing checkout

The flow affects what the customer sees and what the app, merchant and bank need to support. NPCI’s FAQ lists four merchant integration modes, but its public description does not provide the bank’s technical specifications for them. Treat the following as product-level distinctions to discuss with the acquiring bank, not as API instructions.

  • QR: The customer uses a UPI app to scan a merchant QR and authorize the payment. Clarify how the QR is generated or presented in the bank-supported setup, how the merchant identifies the payment and how the app learns its status.
  • Intent: The customer starts a payment from the merchant app and is directed into a UPI payment experience. Confirm which device and app scenarios the bank’s implementation supports and how the customer returns to the merchant app.
  • Application-based: The payment is initiated through an application-based integration. Ask the bank to define the supported user journey, participating components and required app-side handling in its implementation kit.
  • Collect: A payment request is presented for the customer to review and authorize. Confirm how requests are created, displayed, tracked and handled when they are pending, declined or expire under the bank’s rules.

Do not select a mode solely because it appears simplest to implement. The useful choice is the one that fits the customer journey and is supported by the acquiring bank for the specific merchant and use case. Ask the bank to show the complete payment lifecycle, including how your system should distinguish a completed payment from a pending or failed attempt.

Compare flows using the same product questions rather than the mode name alone: who initiates the payment, where the customer sees and authorizes it, what happens when the customer leaves the original app, how the merchant can associate an outcome with the right transaction, and which party supports the user if the result is unresolved. NPCI’s public list helps frame that conversation, but it does not answer these bank-specific implementation questions.

Follow a bank-mediated integration plan

NPCI’s public pages establish the participant routes and broad merchant modes, but they do not publish an end-to-end API specification, a bank sandbox process, certification schedule or commercial terms. The practical integration plan therefore starts with partner selection and obtaining partner-specific requirements—not with copying generic endpoint examples.

  1. Write down the product role and payment use case. State whether you are seeking TPAP onboarding, merchant payment acceptance or a PPI-related arrangement. Describe who pays whom, where the payment begins, what the customer must see and what result your app needs to record.
  2. Approach the relevant bank partner. For a TPAP, approach a sponsor bank; for merchant acceptance, approach an acquiring bank. Explain the intended flow and ask whether the bank supports it for your business and proposed product.
  3. Request the current integration kit and onboarding requirements. Obtain the bank’s applicable technical documentation, environment or sandbox instructions, security expectations, certification steps, support process and commercial terms directly from the bank. NPCI’s public material does not establish these partner-specific details.
  4. Map the customer and system journey from initiation to final status. Document the steps for starting a payment, customer authorization, returning to the app, receiving or checking status, and communicating the outcome. Ask the bank how to handle delayed, duplicate, declined or otherwise unresolved attempts; do not infer the answer from another provider’s integration.
  5. Complete onboarding, risk review and configuration with the bank. NPCI’s merchant onboarding description includes compliance and risk assessment, merchant identifier generation and configuration such as merchant category code and UPI ID. Confirm which items apply to your setup, who supplies each value and how changes are handled.
  6. Implement against the bank’s materials. Use the selected partner’s interface definitions, approved flow and testing instructions. Do not build against assumed endpoints, credentials or message formats: the public NPCI material cited here does not specify them.
  7. Test the full lifecycle in the environment the bank provides. Agree with the partner on test cases, evidence and any review or certification required before launch. Verify the outcomes your app presents and records against the bank’s defined status handling; no public standard timeline or universal test procedure is established by NPCI’s FAQ.
  8. Set up operating ownership before launch. Agree who handles customer-support escalations, payment-status investigations, reconciliation and applicable dispute or chargeback procedures. Confirm the current bank and NPCI operational requirements rather than assuming they are identical across partners.

Turn partner answers into explicit project dependencies. Separate facts confirmed by the bank from items still awaiting a decision, and identify who on your product, engineering, compliance and operations teams owns each open question. This avoids mistaking an assumed sandbox, testing sequence or approval date for a commitment from the partner.

Plan compliance, security and operations alongside engineering

UPI is an instant payment system developed by NPCI, which NPCI describes as an RBI-regulated entity, and is built over IMPS infrastructure. NPCI’s FAQ also describes customer registration through a PSP and authorization using a UPI PIN. These ecosystem facts explain why a UPI feature depends on regulated payment participants; they do not replace the onboarding requirements for a particular fintech.

Eligibility and compliance

An NPCI Product Booklet excerpt says: “The Payment Service Provider/member should be a regulated entity by RBI under the Banking Regulations Act 1949, should be authorised by RBI for providing mobile banking service.” The booklet also describes audit and continuing compliance expectations. Treat this as wording from that booklet, not a complete or project-specific statement of current legal eligibility. Ask the sponsor bank which current requirements govern the proposed role and which entity is responsible for satisfying them.

For merchant onboarding, NPCI’s FAQ describes due diligence and risk assessment, alongside merchant identification and configuration. Prepare clear information about the business, intended customer flow and merchant setup so the acquiring bank can tell you what it needs. The public material does not provide a universal document list or a fixed approval sequence.

Do not treat the reference to a merchant identifier, merchant category code or UPI ID as a universal self-assigned configuration recipe. NPCI’s high-level description says these are part of merchant onboarding configuration; confirm with the acquiring bank how they are generated, supplied, checked and maintained for your arrangement. The exact responsibilities and required information are not set out in the public excerpt.

Security and customer authorization

Design the experience around the authorization step supported by the bank. NPCI’s FAQ describes UPI PIN authorization; do not design a flow that asks your app to collect or handle a customer’s UPI PIN. Obtain the bank’s security requirements and approved user journey, then make your app’s instructions consistent with that journey.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also get the bank’s current security and review requirements before estimating what engineering must deliver. The Product Booklet excerpt mentions audit and continuing compliance expectations, but it does not give a project-specific security checklist or test standard. Ask which controls, evidence and reviews apply to the product and which participating entity is accountable for them.

Reconciliation, support and changing rules

Payment initiation and payment confirmation are different events in a customer journey. Before release, agree with the bank how your app should establish the final status, reconcile its records and direct unresolved cases. The exact mechanisms and responsibilities are partner-specific in the public material available here, so obtain them in writing from the selected bank.

Work out the operational handoffs as well as the app screens: who can investigate a status question, where the customer should be directed, what information your support team can rely on, and which party owns any applicable dispute or chargeback process. These are planning questions, not a claim that NPCI’s public pages prescribe one universal operating model. Ask the partner to document the flow it supports.

Operational rules can change. NPCI’s circular register displayed FY 2026–27 updates covering merchant QR branding, chargeback turnaround times, international QR acceptance and biometric authentication limits. This is a reason to check current circulars and the bank’s implementation materials for the rules relevant to your use case; the register excerpt does not establish that every update applies to every integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a review step into ongoing operations: identify who monitors relevant NPCI circulars and bank notices, who determines whether a change affects the product, and how implementation changes are coordinated. The cited register is an illustration of subject areas that can receive updates, not a complete statement of current obligations for your specific flow.

Compare partners using the right questions

Compare banks only after deciding your participant role and desired flow. The most useful questions are the ones that expose whether the partner supports your exact product, what it expects from you and how your teams will operate the service.

  • Role and eligibility: Is the relationship for TPAP onboarding, merchant acceptance or a PPI use case? What current criteria apply to the proposed entities?
  • Flow coverage: Which of QR, intent, application-based and collect are supported for this setup? What customer and app journeys are supported on the devices and platforms you plan to serve?
  • Implementation: What integration kit, sandbox or test environment is available? Which technical, security and certification steps must be completed, and who approves readiness?
  • Merchant setup: What due diligence is required? Who generates the merchant identifier and configures the merchant category code and UPI ID?
  • Operations: How are payment status, reconciliation, support escalations and applicable disputes handled? Which party owns each step?
  • Commercial terms and timing: What fees, contractual terms and onboarding schedule apply to your case? NPCI’s public material cited here does not state bank-specific prices or timelines, so obtain direct written terms.
  • Change management: How will you learn about updated NPCI rules or bank requirements, and who will assess whether a change affects your app?

For a useful comparison, record answers for each prospective partner against the same questions. A bank that supports a particular flow in one context should not be assumed to support it for your product, merchant setup or participant role. Confirm scope and conditions directly instead of comparing vague claims such as “UPI enabled.”

Record the bank’s answers in a product and delivery decision log. That makes it easier to distinguish requirements confirmed by the partner from assumptions in product plans, and to identify unresolved dependencies before committing to a launch date.

What public ecosystem figures can—and cannot—tell you

NPCI’s August 2025 UPI-app table reported 9,152.54 million customer-initiated transactions for PhonePe and 7,063.76 million for Google Pay. These are volumes for the named apps in that month, reported in millions; they are a dated illustration of ecosystem scale, not a current ranking or market-share measure. The figures do not predict a fintech app’s adoption, success rate, integration cost or time to launch.

No transaction success-rate, integration-time, adoption-growth or cost figure is established in the official material described here. Those values depend on information not supplied by the public high-level pages, including the chosen bank’s implementation and the fintech’s product and operating model. Do not use ecosystem transaction volume as a proxy for any of them.

Common planning mistakes to avoid

  • Treating UPI as an open, self-serve API: NPCI’s public guidance points to sponsor-bank onboarding for TPAPs and acquiring-bank infrastructure for merchants. Get the implementation route from the relevant bank.
  • Confusing TPAP onboarding with merchant acceptance: These are separate roles and partner routes. A product may need to assess both, but one does not automatically satisfy the other.
  • Assuming all merchant modes work for every setup: NPCI lists four modes, but the acquiring bank must confirm support and implementation for the intended use case.
  • Committing to a launch date before partner requirements are known: Public NPCI material does not set a universal sandbox, certification or onboarding timeline. Build the schedule from the selected bank’s confirmed process.
  • Estimating fees or technical effort from generic examples: The cited public material does not provide bank-specific commercial terms or API documentation. Avoid invented endpoint details, cost assumptions or performance claims.
  • Leaving operations until after engineering: Status handling, reconciliation and customer support need named owners and partner-agreed processes before launch, even though the exact mechanics vary by setup.
  • Assuming the Product Booklet excerpt is a complete current legal checklist: It supplies high-level eligibility wording and audit context, not a project-specific determination. Confirm operative requirements with the bank.
  • Treating a PPI statement as universal authorization: NPCI’s FAQ refers to full-KYC PPIs and RBI interoperability guidelines, but it does not detail every issuer’s capabilities or obligations.
  • Assuming a hardware purchase solves integration: The relevant guidance concerns bank relationships, onboarding and software payment flows; it does not identify a generic device as a requirement for TPAP or merchant integration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can a TPAP get onboarded on UPI?

NPCI’s FAQ directs a TPAP to approach a sponsor bank, which helps raise the onboarding request. The FAQ’s high-level direction is not an approval or a complete checklist; ask the bank for current eligibility, onboarding and implementation requirements.

What are available integration modes for merchant?

NPCI lists QR, intent, application-based and collect. Their availability and technical details depend on the merchant setup and acquiring bank, so confirm supported flows and obtain the bank’s current integration material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a fintech integrate UPI through a public, self-service API?

The NPCI public material described here does not provide a universal self-service API or end-to-end technical specification. TPAPs should approach a sponsor bank, while merchants should work with an acquiring bank; obtain the relevant integration kit directly from that partner.

How much does UPI integration cost, and how long does it take?

The official public material reviewed does not give bank-specific fees, commercial terms, sandbox or certification timelines, or a standard implementation duration. Request written terms and a schedule from the prospective bank partner rather than relying on generic estimates.

Can a full-KYC PPI be linked to UPI?

NPCI says full-KYC PPIs can be linked through PPI issuer UPI apps and TPAPs under extant RBI interoperability guidelines. The FAQ excerpt does not specify every issuer’s capabilities or obligations, so confirm the applicable arrangement and current requirements with the issuer and bank.

Does the fintech app handle the customer’s UPI PIN?

NPCI’s FAQ describes UPI PIN authorization. Design the customer journey around the bank-supported authorization flow; do not build an app flow that asks your product to collect or handle the customer’s UPI PIN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start by deciding whether you need TPAP onboarding through a sponsor bank, merchant acceptance through an acquiring bank, or a PPI-related arrangement. Then confirm the supported payment flow, current compliance and security requirements, technical kit, commercial terms and operating responsibilities with the relevant bank. NPCI’s public material establishes the high-level routes, but not a universal API, fee schedule or implementation timeline.
