Install Azul Zulu OpenJDK 21, make it Ubuntu’s active Java runtime, download thinkorswim_installer.sh from Schwab, and run it in Terminal. Wine is not required. Schwab lists Ubuntu 18.04 and later among supported Linux versions, but says Linux configuration may require manual tuning and is not officially supported.
This guide covers installation and troubleshooting, not investment or trading advice. A Schwab account is needed to sign in, although the installer can be downloaded without one.
Before you begin
- Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 LTS with an internet connection.
- Terminal access and permission to install packages with
sudo. - A 64-bit system is the normal target. Verify yours with the commands below; Schwab’s published instructions do not establish desktop-client support for ARM64.
- A Schwab account for login. Downloading the software itself does not require an account, according to Schwab’s download page.
Schwab’s current Linux documentation requires Azul Zulu OpenJDK 21, specifically the zulu21-jdk package. Older guides that use Java 8, 11, or 17 are out of date.
1. Confirm Ubuntu and your architecture
Open Terminal and run:
lsb_release -a
dpkg --print-architecture
uname -m
The release information should identify Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (codename jammy). A typical compatible desktop reports amd64 and x86_64. Schwab lists Ubuntu 18.04 and later as supported on its technical FAQ; that range includes 22.04, but it is not a promise that every hardware or desktop-session configuration will work.

2. Install the tools needed for Azul’s repository
These packages let APT retrieve and verify Azul’s signed packages:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y gnupg ca-certificates curl
3. Add Azul’s signed repository
Use the commands Schwab documents:
curl -s https://repos.azul.com/azul-repo.key
| sudo gpg --dearmor -o /usr/share/keyrings/azul.gpg
echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/azul.gpg] https://repos.azul.com/zulu/deb stable main"
| sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/zulu.list
The first command downloads Azul’s public signing key and stores it as a keyring. The second limits that key to the Azul repository, allowing APT to verify packages instead of installing an unverified third-party file. The commands are published in Schwab’s technical FAQ.
4. Install Zulu OpenJDK 21
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y zulu21-jdk
zulu21-jdk is the package named by Schwab for the Linux installation. Azul also provides product information and downloads at its Zulu downloads page; an enterprise subscription is not required for this ordinary runtime installation.
5. Make Java 21 the active Java runtime
Installing another JDK does not automatically make it the default. List the alternatives:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →sudo update-alternatives --config java
Choose the entry whose path identifies Zulu 21. Multiple Java versions can remain installed; do not remove working versions unless you have a separate reason. Verify both the version and the executable path:
java --version
which java
readlink -f "$(which java)"
The output should show major version 21 and an Azul Zulu/OpenJDK runtime. Schwab’s download instructions require Java 21 to be the default Java VM.
6. Download the official Linux installer
Open Schwab’s thinkorswim download page and use its Linux install control. The downloaded file is named:

thinkorswim_installer.sh
Use Schwab’s page rather than a mirror, repackaged archive, random script, or unofficial “cracked” installer. The media-server address can change, so this guide does not hard-code it.
7. Run the installer
Most browsers save the file in ~/Downloads. In Terminal:
cd ~/Downloads
ls -l thinkorswim_installer.sh
sh ./thinkorswim_installer.sh
sh is Schwab’s published command and does not depend on the executable permission bit. You can alternatively use:
chmod +x thinkorswim_installer.sh
./thinkorswim_installer.sh
Graphical launch
If you prefer the file manager, right-click the script, open Properties, enable Allow executing file as program, then double-click it and choose Run. If Ubuntu opens it in a text editor, follow the fix in the troubleshooting section below.
8. Complete setup and sign in
The graphical wizard should let you choose an installation directory. Select the current user unless you specifically need a shared multi-user installation, then wait for it to finish. Launch thinkorswim from the Applications menu or the directory you selected and sign in with your Schwab credentials.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Verify the installation
Before troubleshooting the application, confirm the runtime again:
java --version
Then check that the login window appears, is not blank or immediately closing, reaches the login process, completes its update phase, and loads charts or account data after authentication. Linux behavior can vary with graphics hardware, desktop session, and later platform updates; Schwab warns that Unix-like configurations may require manual updates and tuning and are not officially supported for configuration.

Troubleshooting
The script opens in a text editor
- Close the editor.
- In the file manager, open Properties for the script and enable Allow executing file as program.
- Open your system’s text-file preferences and set executable text files to Ask each time (wording can vary).
- Choose Run, not Display.
The deterministic workaround is to run sh ./thinkorswim_installer.sh from ~/Downloads.
java: command not found
Check installed packages:
dpkg -l | grep -E 'zulu21|openjdk'
If Zulu is absent, install it and select it as the default:
Recommended Free Tools
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y zulu21-jdk
sudo update-alternatives --config java
java --version
The installer reports an unsupported Java version
Java 8, 11, 17, or 25 is not the documented requirement. Run sudo update-alternatives --config java, select Zulu 21, and verify with java --version and readlink -f "$(command -v java)". Installing Zulu 21 without selecting it leaves Ubuntu able to use another runtime.
“Installing Updates” never completes
Schwab says updates are installed when thinkorswim starts. Click the Installing Updates text to expose the progress bar and any error, confirm the internet connection and system clock, then close and relaunch the application. Recheck that Java 21 is still active. Avoid deleting user data as a first response because that can remove workspaces and settings. If the failure began immediately after an update, use thinkorswim web or contact Schwab rather than randomly downgrading Java.
The platform repeatedly says “reconnecting”
Schwab associates this state with connectivity problems. Check whether a browser and other applications also lose access, reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and restart networking equipment if necessary. Do not disable the firewall or security software as a default fix. If ordinary browsing works but only thinkorswim fails, the issue may be platform-specific; if it began after a Java, graphics, Ubuntu, or thinkorswim update, Linux compatibility is another possibility.
The window is blank or renders incorrectly
Possible causes include a graphics-driver issue, Wayland/X11 differences, hybrid-GPU selection, or an incompatibility introduced by a Java or platform update. There is no single current Ubuntu 22.04 command established by Schwab for this symptom. Update the graphics driver through Ubuntu’s supported mechanisms and test the session you normally use; if the desktop remains unusable, move to the browser alternative rather than applying unverified launch flags.
Optional: locate the installed executable
The installer directory depends on your choice and desktop environment. Locate the files before creating a launcher:

find "$HOME" -maxdepth 3 -type f ( -name 'thinkorswim' -o -name 'thinkorswim.vmoptions' ) 2>/dev/null
Use the actual executable path in any manually created .desktop file. Do not assume a universal installation directory.
Do you need Wine?
No. Wine is not required for the current documented Ubuntu route and adds another compatibility layer. Use the native installer and Zulu OpenJDK 21 first. A Wine setup is an unsupported experiment, not a reason to replace the official Linux installer, and there is no established basis to claim it is more reliable for current releases.
When thinkorswim web is the better choice
thinkorswim web runs in a browser with no download or Java dependency. It is the practical fallback when the native client cannot be maintained, a graphics session is problematic, or you want minimal Linux administration. Schwab describes web as a streamlined interface and desktop as the more customizable option in its platform comparison; web should therefore not be treated as feature-identical to desktop.
Native client versus alternatives
| Option | Best suited to | Main advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Linux installer | Ubuntu users who want the desktop application | Official Schwab distribution; no Wine layer; native workflow | Zulu 21 and manual configuration; Linux tuning may be needed; configuration is not officially supported |
| thinkorswim web | Users wanting minimal maintenance or a fallback | No installation or Java; browser-based | Streamlined interface may not expose every desktop feature |
| Windows virtual machine or separate Windows installation | Users requiring the full desktop experience despite Linux problems | Potentially avoids Linux-specific compatibility issues | Extra operating-system setup, resources, maintenance, and possible graphics integration problems |
| Wine | Readers deliberately experimenting with unsupported methods | Can be explored independently of the native path | Additional configuration with possible login, update, graphics, or networking failures |
Support and security boundaries
Schwab documents a Linux installer and lists Ubuntu 18.04 and later, but explicitly warns that Unix-like configurations may need manual tuning and that it does not officially support configuring them. Keep the installer and repository commands tied to the official Schwab and Azul sources, keep Ubuntu and graphics packages updated, and contact Schwab when account access or a platform update fails rather than applying random scripts.
