Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe most practical ways to improve fuel economy are to keep tires at the pressure specified for your vehicle, follow its maintenance schedule, fix genuine mechanical problems, and drive smoothly. The payoff varies with the car, its condition, route, traffic, and weather; published averages are useful benchmarks, not guarantees.
Start with tire pressure
Find the recommended pressure on the tire-information placard—often on the driver’s doorjamb—or in the owner’s manual. Use that vehicle-specific figure, not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall unless the vehicle’s documentation specifically calls for it. The sidewall figure is not a substitute for the car maker’s recommended operating pressure.
How to check it
- Check all tires with a pressure gauge when they are cold: before driving, or after the vehicle has been parked for several hours.
- Compare the readings with the vehicle’s placard or manual, then adjust as needed. Check the spare if applicable.
- Make this a monthly check. Recheck after a substantial temperature change or if you suspect a leak, and respond to any tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning.
A TPMS warning is useful, but it does not replace periodic checks. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends keeping a tire-pressure gauge in the vehicle: NHTSA tire safety guidance.
What the fuel-economy estimates mean
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that properly inflated tires improve gas mileage by 0.6% on average and potentially up to 3%; it also estimates that underinflation reduces mileage by about 0.2% for each psi drop in average pressure. These are broad estimates published by DOE in 2022, not a prediction for an individual car or a reason to inflate above the vehicle’s specification. See DOE fuel-economy maintenance guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Accurate, Dependable Readings: Factory‑calibrated to ±1 PSI, so you can confidently match your vehicle’s recommended PSI (check the door jamb sticker). Ideal for monthly checks and road trips — consistent results every time, cold or warm.
- Bright Backlit Display & Nozzle Light: The illuminated nozzle helps you find the valve stem in the dark, while the backlit LCD makes readings crystal clear in dim garages or at night. No more squinting or holding a flashlight.
- 4 Measurement Units, One Button: Quickly switch among PSI, Bar, Kgf/cm², and KPA with a single press. No complex settings — just press and cycle to your preferred unit. Perfect for drivers who need multiple scales.
- Broad Compatibility for Everyday Vehicles: 0–150 PSI covers cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and spare tires (often 60 PSI). Fits standard Schrader valves; just press on for a reading.
- Auto‑Off to Extend Battery Life: The gauge automatically powers down after 30 seconds of inactivity, so the included 2*AAA batteries last longer. Always ready for your monthly checks without surprise dead batteries.
Maintain the vehicle to its own schedule
Use the maintenance schedule for your exact vehicle and engine, and follow the manufacturer’s requirements for service and fluids. DOE says properly maintained vehicles average about 4% better gas mileage. That population-level figure does not mean an oil change by itself will deliver a fixed improvement; results depend on the vehicle’s condition and the work needed.
Investigate a sudden drop
If fuel economy changes noticeably without an obvious change in your route or driving, check for a maintenance or mechanical issue. DOE notes that repairing a serious fault—such as a faulty oxygen sensor—can improve mileage substantially, but the amount depends on the fault and repair. Diagnose the problem rather than assuming a generic service or additive will fix it.

Drive smoothly and anticipate traffic
- Accelerate progressively and avoid abrupt acceleration and braking.
- Look ahead, leave a safe following distance, and adjust your speed smoothly as traffic changes.
- Avoid unnecessary idling and combine errands when practical.
- Obey speed limits and adapt to road and weather conditions; fuel savings are never a reason to drive unsafely.
These habits can reduce avoidable fuel use, but the size of any benefit depends on the trip and conditions. DOE offers additional fuel-efficient driving tips.
Carry less, and consider tires when replacement is due
Remove unnecessary weight
Take out items you do not need and avoid carrying exterior cargo unless necessary. Natural Resources Canada estimates that a mid-size car’s fuel consumption rises about 1% for every 25 kilograms it carries. The result page does not state a publication date, and the estimate should not be treated as an exact figure for every vehicle: Natural Resources Canada fuel-efficient driving techniques.

Compare replacement tires on more than efficiency
If you already need new tires, low-rolling-resistance tires may improve fuel economy, according to NHTSA. Compare only options approved for your vehicle and consider fit, wet and dry handling, durability, noise, and price as well as efficiency. No tire model is best for every car or driver. NHTSA’s tire guidance discusses tire safety and replacement considerations.
