To get more from Aeroplan, focus on three decisions: earn points through spending and travel you already planned, compare points and cash for the exact same trip, and keep Elite Status qualification separate from your redeemable points balance. Cards and Family Sharing can help in the right circumstances, but their value depends on the current terms and how you travel.
Know what Aeroplan points can—and cannot—do
Aeroplan points are redeemable for flight rewards on Air Canada and partner airlines, as well as non-flight options such as hotels, car rentals, vacation packages, and activities. Earning a point does not automatically advance your Elite Status: status qualification uses separate rules and qualifying activity.

Air Canada does not establish one universal cash value for a point. The useful value depends on the reward available for your dates, itinerary, cabin, and account benefits, so evaluate each redemption rather than relying on a fixed cents-per-point figure. Air Canada’s rewards page describes the available categories.
Earn points without confusing them with status credit
Flights and partner activity
Air Canada lists eligible Air Canada flights, partner airlines, its eStore, retail and travel partners, and co-branded cards as ways to earn. For eligible Air Canada flights, points are calculated from ticket spend; qualifying flights may also earn Status Qualifying Miles, Status Qualifying Dollars, and Status Qualifying Segments, subject to the applicable conditions. Economy Basic fares do not earn Status Qualifying Currencies under Air Canada’s published flight-earning rules. Check Air Canada’s flight-earning page for the fare and itinerary rules.

- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Partner-flight earning is particularly important to verify: for travel on or after January 1, 2026, Air Canada says the earning method depends on where the ticket was purchased and which partner operated the flight. Do not assume a single formula applies to every partner, fare, or ticket.
Everyday purchases and missing points
Use the eStore and partner offers for purchases you would make anyway. A bonus does not improve your finances if it persuades you to spend more than planned. Add your Aeroplan number before travel, keep your ticket and boarding pass until the activity posts, and check your account afterward. Air Canada says missing flight points may be requested within 11 months of the flight date; use the current claim process on its flight-earning page.
Rank #2
- Use your Aéropostale Gift Card at any Aéropostale or P.S. from Aéropostale store or online.
- Aéropostale, Inc. is a mall-based, specialty retailer of casual apparel and accessories.
- Over 900 Aéropostale stores across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada, over 70 P.S. from Aéropostale stores in the United States
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Track Elite Status on its own terms
For 2026, Air Canada describes Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) as the single path to Aeroplan Elite Status and milestone benefits. Ordinary redeemable points are not a substitute for SQC: points converted from another program or earned through the eStore, promotions, or bonuses are not eligible for SQC unless Air Canada specifies otherwise.
Air Canada also describes a separate 100,000 EDQ route to 25K Core Benefits. That route does not unlock Milestone Benefits unless you also cross an SQC milestone. Because qualifying thresholds and eligible activities can change, consult the current Aeroplan Elite Status rules before planning travel around a target.

Decide whether a flight is worth booking with points
Compare the live cash fare and the points price for the same itinerary and dates. Include the cash charges due on the reward booking, and make sure the cabin, flight times, and availability are genuinely comparable. Then check whether cardholder pricing or a Priority Reward changes the points required. A low points price is not automatically the better choice if the schedule, cabin, or total cash cost is worse for your needs.
Air Canada’s card-benefits page advertises at least 30% fewer points for eligible Air Canada flight rewards compared with using points from a non-Aeroplan Canadian bank travel program. This is a conditional program comparison, subject to its terms—not a discount against cash fares or every competing rewards program. See the current Aeroplan card benefits for details.

- No fees. No expiration. Ever.
- Gift a getaway because special days deserve special destinations.

- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Use Priority Rewards only when the terms fit
Air Canada says a Priority Reward reduces the point price by 50% on eligible flight rewards. The voucher must be used to book within one year of issue. Eligibility, destination and fare restrictions, and availability matter, so check the current Priority Rewards terms before counting on a particular itinerary.

An Aeroplan card may add points and travel benefits, and Air Canada promotes cardholder pricing and other program features. That does not make a card worthwhile for every traveler. Compare the specific card’s current annual fee, earning rates, benefits, eligibility, and any relevant restrictions with the value you realistically expect to use. Do not count advertised benefits as savings unless they replace expenses or improve trips you would actually take.

Use Family Sharing for pooled redemptions, not shared status
Aeroplan Family Sharing allows up to eight members in a pool. Members’ points contribute to the shared balance, and members with redemption privileges can book from it; redemptions draw proportionally from member balances. The family lead controls whether members may redeem. Pooling does not combine or change members’ individual Elite Status progress.
Air Canada’s US Family Sharing page currently says that creating a new pool is temporarily unavailable, while existing pools are unaffected. That restriction can change, so check the current Family Sharing page before making plans. The page also describes an 18-month inactivity rule for points expiry and how pooling and redemptions affect balances; review its live terms for the rules that apply to your account.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- For each trip, compare the cash price with points required plus cash charges for the same dates and itinerary.
- Check flight times, cabin, and reward availability before treating two options as equivalent.
- Look for a cardholder price or eligible Priority Reward, and confirm its terms before including it in your calculation.
- Before applying for a card, weigh its current fee and benefits against your likely spending and travel.
- If pooling points, confirm who can redeem, whether a new pool can be created, and how the rules affect each member’s balance.
- For status goals, track SQC and other currently eligible qualification activity separately from ordinary points.
