Eligible shoppers may get up to 10% off certain Surface devices, student PCs and accessories; UK shoppers are also offered 5% off Surface Go. For coursework software, check whether your school provides free Office 365 Education separately. Use a personal Microsoft account to verify the Store discount, and confirm the eligible price in your basket before paying.
What the Microsoft student discount covers
The offer depends on the country storefront, product, current sale and eligibility. “Up to 10%” is a ceiling for selected products, not a guaranteed reduction on every device. Microsoft says it applies the better available price where its education pricing and a sale price differ; the offers are not necessarily stackable. Check the current product page and basket because eligible models, inventory and terms can change.

Who can qualify?
United States
Microsoft identifies K–12 and higher-education students, parents of students, faculty currently working in education, and qualifying homeschool students or families. Eligibility is not automatic: Microsoft may request information beyond a school email address and retains the right to verify eligibility. See the US education offer terms.

United Kingdom
The UK education offer includes primary, secondary and higher-education students, parents, and faculty currently working in education. Microsoft also lists separate discounts for NHS staff and their immediate families, and for active, former and retired armed-forces members and their immediate families. Those are distinct eligibility routes, even though Microsoft presents them alongside education offers. Read the UK discount terms.

How to verify eligibility and buy an eligible product
For the hardware Store discount, use the personal Microsoft account you will use to shop. Microsoft says not to use a work or school account for this Store verification. The exact button wording can vary; look for the eligibility-check control on your country’s page.
- Open the US education page or the UK eligibility page, according to where you are buying.
- Select the eligibility-check option, such as “Check your eligibility” or “Sign in to check eligibility.”
- Sign in with your personal Microsoft account and submit the requested eligibility information.
- After approval, stay signed in and shop the same country storefront for eligible products.
- Add the product to your basket and check that the education price or lower sale price appears. No separate coupon code may be needed; pricing is applied automatically to eligible purchases.
- Review the final amount and offer terms before checkout, then complete the purchase using the same account.
The UK offer is for personal use through the UK Microsoft Store online and may not be combined with other offers. Commercial, bulk and institutional orders do not qualify for the normal personal Store discount. See the UK offer terms.
What products may qualify—and what is excluded
Microsoft describes eligible categories rather than guaranteeing a permanent model list. Selected Surface laptops and 2-in-1 devices, student laptops or PCs, and PC accessories may qualify. The UK advertises 5% off Surface Go. Confirm the specific configuration in the live listing and basket; Surface for Business devices and some customised products are excluded.

The normal Store education discount does not make every Microsoft product a student-priced product. Microsoft’s US and UK terms exclude or generally do not apply the discount to:
- Xbox consoles, games and accessories, including digital games.
- Microsoft 365 and other services or subscriptions, Office software and apps, and Windows 10 or Windows 11 licenses.
- Digital apps, in-app content and gift cards.
- Personalised or customised products.
- Surface for Business devices and commercial, bulk, business, government, nonprofit or institutional purchases.
Check the US exclusions or the UK student-store information before assuming an item qualifies.
How to get free Office 365 Education
Office 365 Education is a separate school-based entitlement, not a discount on Microsoft 365 Personal, Family or Premium. To check access, use your school-issued email address on Microsoft’s Office 365 Education page.

- Enter your school email and select “Get started” or the equivalent current option.
- Complete the student or institution verification flow.
- If your institution qualifies, follow the instructions to create or access the education account and available apps, which can include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Teams.
A school email alone does not guarantee access: the institution must meet Microsoft’s academic requirements and be verified. The education account may be administered by the school, with school-set storage and access policies; access can change when you leave. Microsoft’s academic eligibility guidance explains institutional verification and education plans. If your address is rejected, ask your school’s IT department whether it participates before buying a consumer subscription. Check the features of the specific education plan rather than assuming it includes every desktop feature or consumer benefit.

United States: a college-PC bundle is a separate promotion
Microsoft’s US education page has advertised a limited 2026 college-PC promotion with possible benefits for verified college or university students, including one-year subscriptions for qualifying new subscribers and an Xbox Design Lab Wireless Controller subject to availability and fulfilment restrictions. This is separate from the standard hardware discount; Xbox is not thereby included in the normal offer.
The published information has shown different qualifying-purchase end dates—June 30 or August 31, 2026—and a July 31, 2026 redemption deadline. Because those dates conflict and the stated redemption deadline has passed, do not treat the bundle as currently available without confirming a new window in Microsoft’s live US offer terms. The promotion was described as limited to verified college students physically in the US at purchase; subscription redemption required a Microsoft account and valid payment method, and subscriptions could auto-renew into paid plans unless cancelled. Microsoft’s bundle announcement is also relevant, but the live offer terms determine availability.

United Kingdom: check separate discounts and terms
The UK page advertises up to 10% off eligible computers and accessories, 5% off Surface Go and free Office 365 for eligible students. The education discount and any sale price are not added together; the better applicable price is used. NHS and armed-forces offers have their own eligibility rules. The offer applies through the UK online Store for personal use, so do not assume these terms apply in another country.

- Check that the specific item and configuration are eligible and not personalised or customised.

This can mean the institution is not recognised or has not completed academic verification, the address cannot receive the required email, or you are not currently enrolled or employed. It can also happen when someone tries to use a school account for the Store hardware check: use a personal Microsoft account for that process, and reserve the school address for Office 365 Education. Microsoft explains the institution-verification process in its academic eligibility documentation.

You are a parent buying a device
Parents may qualify under Microsoft’s education offer. Check eligibility with the parent’s personal Microsoft account, then confirm that the intended product qualifies; parent eligibility does not turn every item or purchase into an eligible one.
Is buying from Microsoft the best value?
Compare the final Microsoft basket price with retailer sales and other legitimate student offers before deciding. A 5–10% education discount may be less than a current sale elsewhere, and the product you want may not qualify. Also compare the full configuration cost—including keyboard or other accessories—with the specifications your course requires, warranty and return terms, repairability and upgrade options. If Microsoft’s price is competitive and the eligible price is visible before payment, buying direct may suit you; otherwise, consider alternatives such as a university procurement scheme or a refurbished device. Microsoft lists refurbished Surface devices as a Store category, but availability and pricing vary (Microsoft Store buying information).
