To begin, install the official app, sign up with a phone number or email address, provide your legal details, complete any requested identity checks, choose a $cashtag, secure the account, and make a small test payment. Creating an account and many ordinary payments are free, but credit-card funding, instant transfers, paper-cash deposits, ATM withdrawals, and some international transactions can cost extra.
What Cash App is—and is not
Cash App is a financial-services platform rather than a traditional bank. Partner financial institutions provide banking and card services. Its core functions include peer-to-peer payments, a stored Cash App balance, bank transfers, direct deposit, paper-money deposits, and the optional Cash App Card. Savings, investing, bitcoin, borrowing, and Afterpay are separate features and are not required for basic payments. See Cash App’s explanations of how Cash App works and whether it is a bank.

Do not assume every balance is automatically insured like a conventional bank deposit. Cash App’s U.S. Terms describe pass-through FDIC insurance only under specified account and product conditions, including qualifying Cash App Card or sponsored-account arrangements.
What you need before signing up
- U.S. residency; ordinary Cash App accounts are not generally available outside the United States.
- Age 18 or older and the age of majority in your state. Teen and sponsored accounts follow a separate path.
- A smartphone with the official Cash App app, plus a working phone number or email address.
- Your legal name and date of birth, with additional identity information if Cash App requests it.
- A debit card or bank account is optional for opening the account or receiving money, but makes funding and withdrawals easier.

How to create a Cash App account
- Download Cash App from your device’s official app store listing, or start at cash.app. Avoid links sent by strangers and search advertisements that imitate the brand.
- Enter your phone number or email address.
- Enter the one-time confirmation code.
- Provide your full legal name and date of birth.
- Complete identity verification when prompted. Cash App may request a Social Security number or government-issued identification.
- Choose or confirm a public $cashtag.
- Create a Cash PIN and enable the available security-lock option.
- Review privacy, notification, and security settings.
- Optionally link a debit card or bank account.

Verify your identity and understand limits
Opening an account and completing verification are different steps. Some limited activity may be possible before verification, while higher limits and particular features can require additional checks. Cash App’s published guide says an unverified user may send up to $250 in seven days and receive up to $1,000 in 30 days; these are published figures, not a promise for every account.
To check your status, tap the profile icon, open Account & settings, choose Security & privacy, and look for Identity verification. Functional destinations may be labeled differently after an app update. Verification guidance is also available in Cash App’s identity-verification documentation.

Choose and protect your $cashtag
Your $cashtag is a public identifier that others can use to pay you. It is not a password. Do not put sensitive information in your display name, payment notes, or public posts, and check the recipient’s identifier before every payment. Keep your Cash PIN and one-time codes private.
Turn on basic protections
- Enable security lock with a PIN, fingerprint, or face authentication.
- Turn on transaction notifications and review the Activity tab regularly.
- Lock the Cash App Card immediately if it is lost or stolen.
Link a bank account or debit card
Linking lets you add money more conveniently and move funds to a bank. Cash App’s published path is:

- Tap the profile icon.
- Open Account & settings.
- Select Linked bank accounts.
- Tap Link bank and follow the verification prompts.
Cash App notes that a debit card may need to be linked first. You can still receive money without linking a bank.

Money another Cash App user sends goes into your Cash App balance; no linked bank account is required.

These are practical for regular funding. Ordinary bank-funded payments are generally free, subject to the fee shown for your transaction.
Use direct deposit
Eligible users can use Cash App account and routing numbers for direct deposits. Cash App advertises access to paychecks up to two days early, but timing depends on when the payer submits the deposit.

Deposit paper cash
- Open the Money tab.
- Choose Deposit paper money.
- Enter your ZIP code to find a participating location.
- Show the barcode or swipe your Cash App Card.
- Give the cash to the cashier and keep the receipt.
Cash App publishes a $1 fee per paper-money deposit; participating locations and availability can vary.
Use a credit card only when the fee is acceptable
Cash App’s Terms publish a 3% fee for credit-card-funded payments. A debit card, bank account, or existing balance is usually the lower-cost choice.

- Open Cash App and tap the payment screen marked with the $ symbol.
- Enter the amount.
- Find the recipient by name, $cashtag, phone number, or email.
- Add a clear note describing the payment.
- Check the recipient identity and amount again.
- Tap Pay.
Cash App says peer-to-peer payments are generally instant and completed payments generally cannot be canceled. If you choose the wrong person, use the payment’s request function to ask for a return; recovery is not guaranteed. Do not use this flow to pay an unfamiliar seller when you need purchase protection.
Receive or request money
- Share your $cashtag.
- Use the phone number or email connected to your account.
- Share a Cash App payment link.
- Tap Request, enter an amount, select the person, and add a note.
If a recipient does not yet have Cash App, they may need to create and verify an account using the same phone number or email. Cash App says an unclaimed payment may be returned if that does not happen within 14 days; see Cash App’s send page.

Transfer Cash App money to your bank
- Tap the profile icon and link a bank if necessary.
- Open the Money tab.
- Select Withdraw and enter the amount.
- Choose Standard or Instant.
- Select the linked bank account and confirm.
Standard transfers are described as free and typically take one to three business days. Instant transfers cost a fee. Cash App’s own pages currently show different published ranges: the send-and-receive guide lists 0.5%–1.75%, minimum $0.25, while the Terms and fee page list 0.5%–2.5% with minimums and maximums that can vary. Treat the amount displayed on your confirmation screen as the applicable price before choosing Instant.

The Cash App Card is optional; peer-to-peer payments work without it. It lets you spend your Cash App balance in stores and online and use eligible ATMs.
- Open Cash App and go to Card Home through the Money tab.
- Choose a design and confirm your mailing address.
- Complete identity verification.
- Use the virtual card if available while waiting.
- Scan the QR code to activate the physical card when it arrives.
Cash App says delivery normally takes seven to 10 business days and advertises no monthly or annual card fee. ATM, replacement-card, foreign-transaction, and other conditional fees can apply. Details are in the Cash App Card guide.

Security and scam prevention
Cash App describes encryption, fraud detection, real-time alerts, card lock, security lock, and identity verification. Those controls reduce risk but do not guarantee reimbursement.
- Never send money to “unlock,” “verify,” or “receive” a prize, refund, job payment, rental, or account.
- Never share a one-time code, Cash PIN, full card number, or login credentials.
- Treat unsolicited calls, texts, emails, and social-media messages claiming to be Cash App support as suspicious. Use only in-app or official Cash App support.
- Confirm the recipient before tapping Pay; completed payments may not be reversible.
- For marketplace purchases from unknown sellers, use a payment method that offers appropriate purchase protections instead of a peer-to-peer transfer.
Troubleshoot common problems
Confirmation code does not arrive
- Check the phone number or email and inspect spam or junk folders.
- Wait before requesting another code; confirm connectivity and update the app.
- Use official Cash App support if the issue continues.
Identity verification fails
- Enter your legal information exactly as it appears on official records.
- Submit current, readable identification and never use another person’s information.
- Expect some features or limits to remain unavailable until verification succeeds.
A payment is missing or pending
- Check the Activity tab and confirm the sender used the right identifier.
- Check whether the payment is pending and whether verification is complete.
- Ask the sender to confirm the funding source and payment status.
Money went to the wrong person
Completed payments generally cannot be canceled. Use Request to ask the recipient to return the money and contact Cash App support, without assuming recovery.
The card is lost or stolen
Lock it, review transactions, report unauthorized activity, order a replacement, and update recurring payments after the replacement arrives.
When another option may fit better
Cash App is useful for U.S. peer-to-peer payments and balance-based spending, but it may not suit everyone. Venmo can make sense when your contacts already use it; PayPal has a broad online checkout ecosystem; Zelle connects through participating banks; and a traditional bank or credit-union account is generally better for branch access and a primary checking relationship. Check each provider’s current terms before opening an account.
