To get old tax returns from TurboTax Online, sign in with the same Intuit account you used to file, open Documents or Tax returns & documents, select the tax year, and download the return PDF. TurboTax says Online customers can access returns for the past seven years. If the return is missing or older, check other Intuit accounts and the computer used for TurboTax Desktop, or request an IRS transcript or a complete return copy depending on what you need.
Download a prior-year TurboTax Online return
TurboTax’s support guidance, updated August 17, 2026, says customers can access returns for the past seven years. Use the Intuit user ID associated with the filing year; menu names and locations can vary.
- Sign in to TurboTax with the same Intuit account used to prepare and file the return.
- Open the returns area. Depending on your account view, go to Documents, or open Tax home and expand Your tax returns & documents. Some prior-year views show a summary first; continue if prompted.
- Select the tax year and choose Download tax PDF or Download/print return (PDF).
- Save the PDF somewhere you can find it, and check that it is the year and document type you need.
TurboTax also describes a route for exporting a more complete file that includes government and TurboTax worksheets: from Tax Home, select Start your amend (change) [year] return, then Start amendment online, and open Tax Tools > Print Center to preview or save the return and select worksheets if needed. This is a print/export route; do not submit an amended return unless you actually intend to amend. See TurboTax’s instructions for getting a return copy.
If the return is missing from TurboTax
- Check other Intuit accounts. TurboTax identifies signing in with a different user ID as the most common reason a return is not found. Use account recovery to identify old user IDs if needed.
- Look for a local Desktop file. TurboTax Desktop returns are stored on the computer by default. Search the computer used to prepare the return, including its documents and backups. For TurboTax Desktop Business, the support page says returns are saved locally by default under Documents > TurboTax; use the Desktop product’s prior-return transfer workflow to open an earlier file.
- Confirm who prepared it. TurboTax does not hold returns filed through another tax preparer. Contact that preparer or request the record from the IRS.
- Consider whether a later return replaced it. TurboTax says another return filed in the same Online account can replace the earlier return, and the replaced return cannot be recovered inside TurboTax Online.
For TurboTax Online Business, check Documents and select the year to download the PDF. If it is absent, TurboTax describes requesting account data under Data & Privacy > Download; its guidance says the email that the data is ready usually takes up to 15 days. Consult TurboTax’s support instructions for product-specific details.

Choose an IRS transcript or a complete return copy
If TurboTax does not have the file you need, first ask the organization requesting your tax records what it accepts. An IRS transcript is an official record, but it is not a photocopy of the entire filed return. The IRS says transcripts can be viewed, printed, or downloaded through an Individual Online Account. Mailed transcripts generally arrive in 5 to 10 calendar days at the address on the latest filed return. Which IRS transcript should you request?
- Tax return transcript: Most line items from the return as originally filed, including adjusted gross income (AGI). It does not show changes made after processing.
- Tax account transcript: Account activity, such as payments, penalties, and adjustments made after filing.
- Record of account transcript: Combines return and account transcript information.
- Wage and income transcript: Information reported to the IRS on forms such as W-2s and 1099s; it is not a full tax return.
- Complete return copy: A photocopy of the filed return and attachments, requested using Form 4506.
The IRS points to Form 4506-T when a transcript year is not available online. Year ranges depend on the transcript type and delivery method. Current IRS guidance describes return and record-of-account transcripts for the current year and three prior processing years; other transcript types may have different ranges. Check the IRS page for the specific transcript type and ordering method, and use the current Form 4506 instructions for a photocopy request, including the fee, eligible years, mailing address, and processing estimate.
