How to Get Free CNA Training: Paid Programs and Reimbursement

Free CNA training may be available through nursing homes, workforce programs, or employer reimbursement. Confirm state approval, exam and supply costs, and employment terms before enrolling.

You can get free CNA training by applying to a nursing home that offers training, finding a state or workforce program that covers it, or asking an employer to reimburse an approved course. Before you enroll, confirm in writing what “free” covers—including the state exam and required supplies—and whether you must work for the employer for a set period.

Start with nursing homes offering paid CNA training

Contact nearby nursing homes and ask whether they have current CNA openings with training included. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recommends asking local nursing homes about training programs, openings, and how to apply. You can ask to speak with the administrator, director of nursing, or assistant director of nursing. CMS describes CNA training as a state-approved program lasting 4 to 12 weeks, followed by a state certification exam; that is CMS guidance, not a guarantee of how long every local program takes. Read CMS guidance on working in a nursing home.

Ask whether training is paid, when employment begins, and whether the employer covers tuition and other costs. Get the terms before accepting a place, especially if the offer requires you to remain employed for a certain period or repay costs if you leave early.

Ask about CNA training reimbursement before paying for a course

CMS says a nursing home may reimburse training costs when it hires someone who completed training elsewhere within 12 months after certification. This is a route to ask about—not an assurance that every facility will reimburse every expense. Before enrolling, confirm the facility’s eligibility rules, covered costs, documentation requirements, and reimbursement timing in writing. CMS explains nursing-home training and reimbursement.

Check state-approved programs and local workforce options

CNA training and credential requirements depend on the state. Check the state nurse aide regulator’s approved-program list before enrolling, and make sure the training leads to the state’s registry or certification pathway. For example, North Carolina DHHS says Nurse Aide I candidates must complete state-approved training and a competency evaluation, or an approved competency evaluation program, and provides links to training locations. See North Carolina’s Nurse Aide I training-program information.

Also contact your state or local workforce development office and ask about funded training, participating employers, and application deadlines. Program availability and conditions are local; a program in one state is not a nationwide benefit.

Example: Wisconsin’s WisCaregiver Careers

WisCaregiver Careers is a Wisconsin Department of Health Services program. Its page says participants select a participating employer, receive paid on-the-job training and free nurse aide training and testing, and may receive a $500 retention bonus after six months of employment. The bonus and program terms apply to this Wisconsin program; they should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. Check Wisconsin’s WisCaregiver Careers details.

Find out what “free” includes

Tuition-free does not necessarily mean there will be no costs to you. Course tuition, state testing, retakes, books, uniforms, background checks, drug tests, and health screenings may be treated separately. State examples illustrate why it is worth checking: Iowa says the provider determines the cost of its 75-hour course and lists exam options and charges; Arkansas distinguishes a licensing fee from exam and screening charges. These are state-specific details, not a national fee schedule. Iowa nurse aide training and testing; Arkansas nurse aide training and certification.

Ask the provider or employer for an itemized cost breakdown before you commit. Do not buy equipment or study materials until the program confirms what you need; requirements vary by provider.

Questions to ask before you enroll

  • Is this program currently approved by the state nurse aide regulator, and does it qualify me for the state registry or certification pathway?
  • Does “free” cover tuition, the state exam, retakes, books, uniforms, background checks, drug tests, and required health screenings?
  • Is training paid, and when does employment begin?
  • Must I work for the employer for a minimum period? Is there a repayment clause or another penalty if I leave early?
  • Who schedules the state exam and submits the results to the registry?
  • If I pay for training first, what are the employer’s reimbursement rules and required documents?
