How to Get Federal Student Loans Out of Default: Rehabilitation, Consolidation, and Repayment Options

Learn how to verify federal student loan default, choose between rehabilitation and Direct Consolidation, and regain an eligible repayment plan.

Start by checking your loan status and holder in your StudentAid.gov account. If a federal loan is in default, the two main ways to resolve it are rehabilitation and Direct Consolidation. Rehabilitation usually takes longer but can lead to removal of the default entry from your credit history; consolidation may be faster, but can increase your balance and generally leaves that entry in place. The right route depends on your loan type, finances, credit-history priorities, and the repayment terms you will qualify for afterward.

How do I get my federal student loans out of default?

First, confirm that the loan is actually in default and find out who holds it. Do not assume that every late loan is defaulted or that your regular servicer still handles a defaulted loan. The steps, contact, and options can differ for Direct, Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL), and Perkins loans.

Check status and holder before taking action

  1. Sign in to StudentAid.gov. Review the account dashboard for a default warning, then open the loan details and check each loan’s status. Federal Student Aid says a federal student loan generally enters default after at least 270 days without scheduled payments.
  2. Identify the holder for each defaulted loan. Defaulted Direct Loans generally transfer to the Department of Education’s Default Resolution Group (DRG). Defaulted FFEL loans transfer to a guaranty agency. The account information and official notices should help identify the organization handling your loan.
  3. Contact that holder through its official channel. Confirm the loan type, balance, status, current collection activity, available resolution routes, and any deadlines. Check the holder’s current instructions before submitting personal or financial documents.
  4. Keep records. Save notices, payment confirmations, signed agreements, and the name and date of any contact. Use the payment amount and schedule in your written agreement rather than estimating them.

After more than 360 days without action, the government may begin involuntary collection. That can include wage garnishment of up to 15% of a paycheck and offset of a tax refund or certain federal payments. These are possible collection actions, not a prediction that one will happen in every case; verify any notice and your situation with the official holder.

If the loan is delinquent but not in default

Do not use a default-resolution route solely because you have missed payments. If StudentAid.gov shows that the loan is delinquent rather than in default, contact your regular servicer promptly about affordable payments or temporary relief. Acting before default may preserve options and avoid the separate default process.

Federal and private loans are different

This guide covers federal student loans. Private student loans do not use the federal rehabilitation and Direct Consolidation processes described here; contact the private lender about its own hardship or collections options.

Should I rehabilitate or consolidate my defaulted student loans?

Neither option is universally best. Rehabilitation is usually a stronger fit if you can make the required payments and want the holder to request removal of the default entry from your credit history. Direct Consolidation may suit someone who needs a potentially faster resolution and accepts that the default entry can remain, while also reviewing the new balance, plan, and long-term cost.

Decision factor Rehabilitation Direct Consolidation
Time Requires nine qualifying payments. Direct and FFEL payments must fall within 10 consecutive months; Perkins has a separate nine-consecutive-payment rule. Federal Student Aid describes it as a faster online option than rehabilitation, but processing time depends on the application and eligible loans.
Monthly payment Uses an income-based standard calculation; if that amount is unaffordable, you can submit income and expense information for an alternative calculation. Depends on the repayment plan selected and the terms available for the new loan.
Credit history After successful completion, the holder requests removal of the default entry. Earlier late-payment history can remain. The default record may remain on the credit history for up to 10 years.
Balance and total cost The amount and schedule are set by the holder’s rehabilitation agreement. Unpaid interest is added to principal; collection costs may increase the balance, and a longer term can mean more interest overall.
Future repayment flexibility Can restore access to eligible federal repayment plans after default is resolved, subject to loan and plan rules. Creates a new Direct Consolidation Loan and may change plan eligibility or forgiveness-payment credit. Check the specific effects before applying.

The table describes general federal rules, not a personal payment quote or guaranteed eligibility decision. Compare the terms offered for your actual loans with the official holder and StudentAid.gov tools before choosing.

How does federal student loan rehabilitation work?

Rehabilitation is an agreement to make a series of voluntary, timely payments. It is not an instant fix: successful completion generally requires nine qualifying payments, so the process takes several months.

Payment count and deadline

  • Direct and FFEL loans: Make nine voluntary, on-time payments within 10 consecutive months. You may miss one payment during that period and still meet the nine-payment count, but use the dates in your agreement to avoid a missed deadline.
  • Perkins loans: The requirement is nine consecutive payments. This differs from the Direct and FFEL timing rule, so confirm the process with the holder of the Perkins loan.

For a Direct or FFEL loan, Federal Student Aid describes the standard proposed monthly amount as 15% of annual discretionary income divided by 12. The official Loan Rehabilitation Income and Expense form defines the calculation more precisely: 15% of the amount by which adjusted gross income exceeds 150% of the applicable poverty guideline, divided by 12, with a $5 minimum. The amount in your agreement—not a rough online estimate—is the amount to pay.

Ask for an alternative if the proposed payment is unaffordable

If the standard proposed payment does not fit your current finances, ask the holder for the Loan Rehabilitation Income and Expense form. Submit it with the requested supporting documentation. The holder can calculate an alternative based on current circumstances, including essential expenses. Provide complete, accurate information and ask how the holder will notify you of the final amount and due dates.

Sign the agreement and make each payment as agreed

  1. Ask the identified holder how to begin rehabilitation and obtain the Rehabilitation Agreement Letter.
  2. Review the agreement’s payment amount, due dates, payment method, and completion requirements. If the proposed amount is not affordable, submit the income and expense form and supporting documents before agreeing to an amount you cannot sustain.
  3. Make each required payment voluntarily and on time. Keep proof of payment and monitor the count with the holder, especially if a payment is delayed or credited incorrectly.
  4. After the required payments, confirm with the holder that rehabilitation is complete and ask when the loan’s status and servicing will be updated.

Many borrowers’ defaulted Direct Loans are held by DRG, but not all defaulted loans are. Federal Student Aid’s rehabilitation FAQ says DRG documentation may be submitted by mail or fax; an FFEL loan held by a guaranty agency should be handled with that agency. MyEdDebt.ed.gov is the Department of Education’s official site for defaulted loans transferred to DRG, and it requires an account separate from your StudentAid.gov login. Verify current submission instructions on the official site or with the holder before sending sensitive documents.

What successful rehabilitation changes

After successful rehabilitation, the default status is removed, collections stop, and the loan holder instructs credit bureaus to remove the default entry. That is not the same as erasing the entire payment history: earlier late-payment information may remain. Rehabilitation also restores federal loan benefits and federal student-aid eligibility, subject to other program rules. It does not guarantee a particular credit-score increase or erase unrelated adverse information.

How does Direct Consolidation resolve default?

Consolidation combines eligible federal loans into one new Direct Consolidation Loan. In the default context, Federal Student Aid identifies it as a potentially faster online route than rehabilitation. It is a new borrowing arrangement with consequences that may be difficult or impossible to reverse, so review the application and repayment terms before submitting it.

Check eligibility and repayment requirements

Not every loan or situation necessarily qualifies on the same terms. Use the current federal consolidation application to verify which loans can be included and what repayment agreement or plan is required for your defaulted loans. Do not assume that every loan listed in your account will automatically be eligible.

Understand the cost before you apply

  • Unpaid interest is capitalized. It is added to principal, so future interest can accrue on a higher balance.
  • Collection costs may increase the amount owed. Check the personalized application and holder’s payoff figures for how the balance will be treated.
  • A longer repayment term can increase total interest. A lower monthly bill can be useful for cash flow, but it may cost more over the life of the loan.
  • The credit record may not be cleaned up. The default entry can remain on your credit history for up to 10 years.
  • Plan and forgiveness effects can change. Consolidation may alter repayment-plan eligibility or affect credit toward forgiveness. Review the consequences for each loan and any forgiveness progress before combining them.

The new interest rate on a federal Direct Consolidation Loan is a fixed weighted average of the rates of the loans being consolidated. Consolidation may also extend the repayment duration. Use the individualized results in the application and the StudentAid.gov repayment calculator to compare likely monthly payments and overall costs. Consolidation cannot be undone, so do not submit until you understand the new loan and the treatment of any existing benefits or payment credit.

Can I get an income-driven repayment plan after student loan default?

A loan that remains in default cannot be enrolled in an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan. Resolve the default first. After successful rehabilitation, you may be eligible for an IDR plan; Federal Student Aid also identifies consolidation followed by repayment under the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) as an option to explore. Neither route guarantees eligibility for a particular plan. Loan type, disbursement date, consolidation timing, and current rules matter.

Plan rules are changing

As of Federal Student Aid guidance reviewed October 9, 2026, the SAVE plan is no longer available following a federal court order. The same guidance says loans disbursed before July 1, 2026 may have fixed-plan options including Standard, Graduated, and Extended; loans disbursed on or after that date have Tiered Standard as the fixed-payment option. Federal Student Aid’s IDR guidance describes RAP and Income-Based Repayment (IBR) eligibility as dependent on loan and date conditions. It also says Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) ends no later than July 1, 2028; the repayment calculator guidance gives that latest end date for both Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and ICR.

These are time-sensitive federal plan rules, not a promise that a particular borrower can enroll. Verify the current options displayed for your loans in StudentAid.gov and confirm with your servicer before choosing a plan. Recheck if an application or transition is still pending, because plan availability can change.

Compare repayment options using your own loan details

  1. After resolving default, sign in to StudentAid.gov and review the eligible plans shown for the loans you will repay.
  2. Use the federal repayment calculator to compare estimated monthly payments and repayment paths with your loan balance, interest rates, and income information.
  3. Ask the servicer to confirm eligibility, the effective date, payment amount, and whether prior qualifying payments or forgiveness progress will count after rehabilitation or consolidation.
  4. Choose a plan you can maintain, then confirm that enrollment is complete and the next payment date is clear.

What if rehabilitation or consolidation is not the right immediate step?

Federal Student Aid also describes repayment agreements and full payment as ways to address default. They are situational alternatives, not interchangeable versions of rehabilitation or consolidation.

Repayment agreement

A repayment agreement may help avoid some collection actions if you meet the required deadlines and terms. It does not remove the default status from your credit history. Ask the holder what the agreement requires, what collection actions it may prevent, and what happens if a payment is missed. Do not treat an agreement to pay as equivalent to completing rehabilitation or obtaining a consolidation loan.

Paying the balance in full

Paying the debt in full resolves the amount owed, but a lump-sum payment may not be realistic. Confirm the payoff amount and payment instructions with the official holder before sending money. If full payment is not feasible, compare the formal resolution routes rather than relying on an informal promise or an unverified third party.

How to choose a route for your situation

  • Prioritize potential removal of the default entry: Ask whether you can sustain rehabilitation payments and obtain the written schedule. The holder requests removal after successful completion, although older late payments can remain.
  • Need a potentially faster route: Explore consolidation, but compare the resulting balance, fixed rate, repayment term, credit record, plan eligibility, and forgiveness effects first.
  • Cannot afford the proposed rehabilitation payment: Request the income and expense form and document your essential expenses; do not assume the first proposed amount is the only possible amount.
  • Have different loan types: Check each loan separately. A Direct Loan, FFEL loan, and Perkins loan may have different holders, procedures, or rehabilitation rules.
  • Are already in default collections: Contact the official holder promptly about deadlines and active collection notices. A route that takes months may not by itself address an immediate notice unless the holder confirms the relevant protections.
  • Have forgiveness progress or special loan benefits: Get a loan-by-loan explanation of what consolidation might change before combining debts.

Use the official StudentAid.gov tools to compare individualized repayment outcomes, then confirm the actual terms with the holder or servicer. If a notice seems wrong, the loan type is unclear, or the consequences are substantial, ask the official holder to explain the account record and available review process before making an irreversible choice.

Its repayment calculator guidance, published August 2026, explains plan comparisons and transition information. For your own account, use the StudentAid.gov dashboard and confirm details directly with the listed holder or servicer; general web guidance cannot determine your specific eligibility or payment.
