How to Get a Refund on Fortnite In-App Purchases

Fortnite Item Shop returns depend on timing, item eligibility, and available Return Tickets. Real-money charges from a platform or seller must be handled there.

Whether you can get a Fortnite purchase refunded depends on what you bought and how you paid. Eligible Item Shop items bought with V-Bucks may be canceled or returned through Fortnite; real-money purchases charged by a console platform or another seller must be handled through that seller. Start by checking the receipt or purchase history to identify the transaction.

First, identify the purchase and payment route

Epic’s current support instructions distinguish Item Shop purchases made with V-Bucks from real-money purchases processed by a third party and from other transaction types. The Item Shop return process sends V-Bucks back; it is not a cash refund.

  • V-Bucks spent on an Item Shop item: Check whether the item qualifies for cancellation or a Return Ticket.
  • Real money charged by a console store or another seller: Epic says it cannot process that refund. Use the refund process of the company that charged you. Epic’s Item Shop purchase support article explains this limitation.
  • Another kind of purchase: In-island transactions, Epic Games Store purchases, and Fab Marketplace purchases have separate support routes. Use Epic’s billing and payment help directory to find the article for your transaction rather than applying the Item Shop rules to it.

Refunding an Item Shop purchase made with V-Bucks

Epic Games Player Support’s current, undated instructions offer two routes for eligible Item Shop items. The first is a cancellation within 24 hours; the second uses a Return Ticket for eligible purchases made within the last 30 days. In either case, a successful return removes the item and returns its V-Bucks.

Cancel within 24 hours

You can cancel an eligible purchase within 24 hours of buying it only if you have not used or equipped the item in any game mode. Epic says an item can be canceled only once.

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online
  1. In Fortnite: Open the game, select your player icon, open the menu, choose Support and Refunds, then Return or cancel purchase.
  2. Find the purchase, select it, and confirm the cancellation.

Use a Return Ticket after the cancellation window

If more than 24 hours have passed, an eligible Item Shop purchase made within the last 30 days may be returned with a Return Ticket. Each account starts with three tickets, receives one new ticket every 365 days, and can hold no more than three at once. If you bought an item as part of a bundle, you must return the entire bundle.

  1. In Fortnite: Open Support and Refunds and choose Return or cancel purchase.
  2. Select the eligible item and follow the prompts to confirm the return.

You can also use the web shop: sign in at the Fortnite Item Shop, select the player icon, choose Return and Cancel Purchases, then Show Purchases. Select the item and confirm. Epic notes that menu wording can change; if you cannot find the flow, use its current support instructions.

If you have no Return Tickets and the 24-hour cancellation period has passed, Epic says this process cannot refund the purchase. Epic Support cannot grant extra tickets.

Purchases that this Item Shop process excludes

Epic lists these as unavailable through Cancel Purchase or Return Tickets:

Fortnite eGift Card
  • Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
  • Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
  • If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
  • Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
  • Redemption: Online
  • Passes, including the Fortnite Festival Pass, and pass levels
  • Premium Reward Track purchases
  • Gifted purchases
  • Level Up Quest Packs
  • Certain Save the World loot llamas and event or weekly items
  • Purchases in developer-made islands

Battle Pass rewards earned through gameplay are also not purchases and are not eligible. Epic’s return-error guidance says an error may indicate that an item is ineligible. For developer-made island transactions, use the separate in-island transaction route in Epic’s billing support directory.

If the refunded V-Bucks do not appear

Epic says V-Bucks usually return within a few minutes, but that timing is not guaranteed. Try these checks from Epic’s troubleshooting instructions:

  1. Refresh the V-Bucks balance in the Item Shop.
  2. Confirm Fortnite is signed in to the Epic account where the return was processed.
  3. Check the relevant in-game currency balance. A purchase made with a platform balance, such as Nintendo balance, may be refunded to that platform balance rather than the shared wallet.
  4. Restart Fortnite.

When a tokenless refund may be possible

Epic says some specific items may qualify for a refund without a Return Ticket in special circumstances, but the option is limited and may not be available on request. It is not a general alternative to the ticket rules. See Epic’s tokenless refund explanation for details.

What to expect from a real-money refund request

If your receipt shows a charge from a console store or other third party, contact that seller and follow its refund policy. Epic Games Player Support states: “If you want a refund for purchased content with real money through a third party that is not Epic Games, Epic does not have the ability to process refunds for those purchases, please visit the Platform Refunds request page for more details.” The available options and any legal rights can depend on where you live and the transaction details, so check the seller’s terms and applicable local rules.
