To get a New Jersey freshwater fishing license, choose the resident or nonresident option that fits your status and age, add a trout stamp if you will fish for or possess trout or salmon, then buy online through New Jersey Fish & Wildlife or from a license agent. On NJDEP’s 2026 license page, annual fishing licenses range from $12.50 to $34; nonresidents may also buy two- or seven-day licenses. Licenses are valid through December 31 of the purchase year, and current fees should be confirmed at checkout.

Who needs a New Jersey freshwater fishing license?

New Jersey DEP Fish & Wildlife says anyone age 16 and older must have a license to fish the state’s fresh waters, including privately owned waters, with a handline, rod and line, or bow and arrow. The age rules distinguish residents from nonresidents:

  • Residents: A fishing license is required from age 16 through 69.
  • Nonresidents: A fishing license is required from age 16 onward.
  • Residents age 70 and older: No fishing license or trout stamp is required. NJDEP says proof of age, such as a driver’s license, serves as the license.

To qualify for a resident license, you generally must have actually lived in New Jersey for the six months immediately before obtaining it. Active-duty U.S. armed-services personnel may purchase a resident fishing license regardless of current residency by showing active-duty identification to the license agent. Check NJDEP’s license information for the applicable details.

How much does a New Jersey fishing license cost?

The following fees are listed on New Jersey DEP Fish & Wildlife’s 2026 license page. Confirm the amount and eligibility shown in the purchase system before paying, since fees and program rules can change.

How to buy the license

  1. Choose resident or nonresident status. Resident status generally requires six months of actual New Jersey residence immediately before obtaining the license. Active-duty service members should review NJDEP’s eligibility rules and bring active-duty identification when buying through an agent.
  2. Select the license type and age category. Residents select the annual age-based license; nonresidents can choose an annual, seven-day, or two-day option.
  3. Add a trout stamp if required. Include it if you will fish for or possess trout or salmon.
  4. Buy online or in person. Use New Jersey Fish & Wildlife’s electronic licensing system, or purchase from a license agent. The system assigns a lifetime Conservation Identification Number (CID#) to a customer profile. A New Jersey driver’s license is required to buy a resident license online. NJDEP’s license page links to the online system and related guidance.
  5. Complete the annual child-support certification. License purchasers must submit the certification each year. It can be completed online or at an agent; details and agent information are on NJDEP’s license agents page.
  6. Save or print the license. NJDEP allows home printing. Durable green stock is available for an optional $2 fee. The license must be visibly displayed on outer clothing while fishing.

To find a license agent, use the county-based listing on the official agent page. Contact the business first to confirm it can complete your transaction.

Freshwater license versus saltwater registration

A freshwater fishing license is not a saltwater permit. NJDEP says anglers fishing marine waters do not need a fishing license, but must register each year with the New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry. Some tidal waters are subject to freshwater license requirements, so check the boundary rules for the water you plan to fish on NJDEP’s license information page.

After you buy: display, replacement and fishing rules

Keep the license visibly displayed on your outer clothing while fishing. If a license or stamp is lost, NJDEP says it can be replaced online or through an agent. For problems with online purchases or printing, use the support instructions on the current license page, where contact details are maintained.

A license does not establish which seasons, sizes or catch limits apply to a particular fish or water. Before you go, consult the current New Jersey Freshwater Fishing Digest and regulations resources for season dates, size limits, creel limits and water-specific rules.
