A freeze is free, does not lower your credit score and remains in place until you lift it. Request one separately from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion; freezing with one bureau does not freeze the other two.
Do you need to confirm your information was exposed first?
No. The Federal Trade Commission says anyone can freeze their credit for any reason. You do not have to wait for a breach notice or an individual exposure confirmation to act. The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division described National Public Data as a Florida-based background-check data broker targeted by a cyberattack in a September 12, 2024 flyer, and recommended considering a free freeze or fraud alert. The official breach-specific material cited here does not establish a current authoritative tool for checking whether a particular person was affected. How to freeze your credit with all three bureaus
- Go to the official freeze page for Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. IdentityTheft.gov also lists the bureaus’ contact details on its recovery steps page.
- Follow each bureau’s instructions to submit a freeze request. You must contact all three; one bureau does not notify the others to freeze your files.
- Save each bureau’s confirmation and the information you need to regain access to the account or request a lift later.
A security freeze limits prospective creditors’ access to your credit file, which can help prevent an identity thief from opening new credit in your name. It does not stop all access to your file or prevent every form of identity theft. The CFPB explains the freeze’s function and exceptions.
Freeze or fraud alert: which should you use?
| Option | What it does | How to request it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Security freeze | Limits prospective creditors’ access to your file. | Request separately from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. | Free and stays in place until you lift it. A lender may not be able to complete an application until it can access the relevant file. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks creditors to take steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. | Contact one of the three nationwide bureaus; it must notify the other two. | Free. You can use an alert alongside a freeze. |
For a suspected misuse of your identity, a fraud alert can add a verification request. A freeze is the option that restricts prospective creditors’ access to the file. The FTC describes both options in its credit-freeze guidance.

How to lift a freeze for a credit application
Before applying for a loan, credit card or other credit, ask the lender which bureau it will check. Then request a temporary lift from the relevant bureau or bureaus; a freeze at another bureau does not need to be lifted unless that lender will check that file. You can also lift a freeze permanently if you choose.
Under the timing rules summarized by the CFPB, a nationwide bureau must complete a telephone or secure electronic lift request within one hour. A lift requested by mail can take up to three business days. Use the bureau’s official channel and allow enough time for the lender to access the file. CFPB: credit-freeze timing and rules

It must send written confirmation no later than five business days after placing the freeze. These are the CFPB’s summaries of statutory deadlines, not a promise that every bureau’s online process will finish sooner. See the CFPB’s current guidance.

A freeze is focused on access to your credit file for new credit. It does not secure your bank accounts, email, tax accounts or other services. The CFPB lists exceptions to the access restriction, including creditors for accounts you already hold, certain government entities and companies hired to monitor a credit file.
