Bring another TSA-accepted credential—most commonly a U.S. passport or passport card—or you may face extra screening, delays, or denial at the checkpoint.
Can you fly without a REAL ID?
Yes, if you are 18 or older and have another form of identification TSA accepts. The May 7, 2025 enforcement date applies to adults at TSA checkpoints for domestic air travel. A noncompliant state license by itself is not accepted, even if it is otherwise valid for driving.
TSA’s current identification guidance says noncompliant state-issued licenses and IDs are no longer valid forms of identification at airports. Because TSA says its acceptable-ID list may change without notice, check the current TSA identification list before your trip.
What can you use instead of a REAL ID?
TSA accepts several alternatives, including these commonly available credentials:

- Enhanced driver’s license or enhanced state ID
- DHS trusted-traveler card
- U.S. Department of Defense ID
- Permanent resident card
- Foreign government passport
- Federally recognized tribal photo ID
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
TSA’s official list includes other credentials as well. Confirm that your specific document is listed and valid for your itinerary before relying on it.
Passport or passport card
A U.S. passport is accepted for airport identification and is also broadly useful for international travel. A passport card is also accepted by TSA as airport identification, but its travel use is narrower: it is for land and sea travel to designated destinations, not international air travel. Check the document’s expiration date and the requirements for your destination.

Other government and trusted-traveler credentials
Enhanced licenses, trusted-traveler cards, military IDs, permanent resident cards, tribal IDs, foreign passports, and TWIC may work as airport identification if they appear on TSA’s current list. Availability and eligibility differ by credential; do not assume a document qualifies merely because it is government-issued.
What if you have no acceptable ID?
TSA may ask you to complete an identity-verification process using information such as your name and current address. If TSA confirms your identity, you may be allowed into the checkpoint, but you can receive additional screening. This is not a guaranteed substitute for an acceptable ID: TSA says you will not enter if you decline to cooperate, do not provide acceptable identification when asked, or TSA cannot confirm your identity.

The outcome is discretionary and may mean delay or denial. In an April 24, 2025 enforcement notice, TSA said travelers presenting a noncompliant state ID without another acceptable alternative could face delays, additional screening, and the possibility of not being permitted into the checkpoint.
How to prepare before your flight
- Check your state license or ID for the REAL ID star or another state-specific REAL ID marking. If it is not compliant, do not rely on it alone at the checkpoint.
- Choose an acceptable alternative, such as a passport, passport card, enhanced license, trusted-traveler card, military ID, permanent resident card, foreign passport, tribal ID, or another credential on TSA’s list.
- Check the document’s expiration date and confirm it works for your itinerary. A passport card, for example, does not serve as an international-air-travel document.
- Review TSA’s acceptable identification page again before departure; TSA notes that its list is subject to change without notice.
- If you may need identity verification or additional screening, allow extra time at the airport. Verification does not guarantee entry to the checkpoint.
Does a child need a REAL ID to fly?
TSA generally does not require identification for travelers under 18 on domestic flights. Check the airline’s policy, particularly for an unaccompanied minor. TSA PreCheck situations may also have additional requirements, so verify the rules that apply to the child and itinerary.
