If a UPI payment fails or stays pending, check two records before deciding what to do: the transaction status in your UPI app and the linked bank account’s statement or debit alert. If the bank shows a debit, the right next step depends on whether you sent money to another person or paid a merchant. Those cases have different reversal deadlines.
Check the UPI status and your bank account
- Open your UPI app’s transaction history and select the payment. Note its status, amount, date and time, payee, and transaction or reference ID if shown.
- Check the linked bank account’s statement or debit alerts for the same amount and transaction. The bank record establishes whether your account was debited; an app error or missing confirmation alone does not establish the final account position.
- Save the transaction details and any evidence of the debit. You may need them when contacting the app provider or bank.
NPCI says users can check a transaction’s status and raise a grievance through the participating bank’s UPI app. Its UPI Help guidance illustrates selecting a failed transaction, submitting a concern about a failed merchant payment not being credited back, and tracking the complaint reference. Exact labels and availability vary by app. See the NPCI UPI FAQ and NPCI UPI Help guidance.
Identify which kind of payment failed
| Situation | What to check | What the guidance says |
|---|---|---|
| UPI funds transfer; your account was debited, but the beneficiary was not credited | Check whether the recipient’s account received the money and whether the transaction remains pending or is marked failed. | RBI’s 2019 circular sets a T+1 reversal deadline if the beneficiary bank cannot credit the account. T is the calendar date of the transaction. |
| Merchant payment; your account was debited, but the merchant did not receive confirmation | Ask the merchant whether its system recorded the payment; raise the payment complaint through the app or bank. | RBI’s 2019 circular sets a T+5 reversal deadline. T is the calendar date of the transaction. |
| Pending transfer; your account was debited, but the beneficiary was not credited | Check the transaction status rather than treating it as a final failed merchant payment. | NPCI says the transfer may reach the beneficiary within 48 hours after the beneficiary bank completes settlement. |
For failed debits, NPCI’s FAQ says the money should be refunded and advises contacting your bank if it has not reversed within one hour. That advice is not the same as the RBI turnaround-time table: the one-hour point is NPCI’s guidance for contacting the bank, while RBI sets the applicable reversal deadlines by transaction type. A pending transfer is also distinct from a failed merchant payment. Read the RBI circular on failed transactions alongside the NPCI FAQ.
Raise a complaint and keep its reference
- Use the issue or grievance option on the transaction in your UPI app, if available, or contact your bank’s customer support.
- Provide the date, amount, payee, transaction reference, displayed status, and evidence that your account was debited.
- Keep the complaint reference and use the app’s complaint-status feature, if provided, to track the case.
- If you suspect the debit was unauthorised or fraudulent, contact your bank promptly. NPCI’s UPI Help guidance directs customers reporting a fraudulent transaction to the bank.
If the applicable RBI turnaround time passes without redress, RBI says customers can register a complaint with the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. The circular also provides for compensation when the specified reversal deadline is exceeded.

Know the reversal deadlines and compensation
RBI’s 2019 circular specifies the following turnaround times and compensation for the UPI cases described above:
- Uncredited funds transfer: reversal by T+1 when the beneficiary bank cannot credit the beneficiary. Compensation is ₹100 per day for delay beyond T+1.
- Merchant payment without confirmation: reversal by T+5 when the merchant location did not receive transaction confirmation. Compensation is ₹100 per day for delay beyond T+5.
Here, T means the calendar date of the transaction. These timelines and compensation figures are from the RBI circular; the applicable case depends on whether the payment was a transfer or a merchant transaction.
