Start with one of these official options if you need the date for a particular payment. A general calendar can tell you which schedule category is likely to apply, but your personal schedule is the place to confirm an upcoming or past payment. The online service is useful when you want to check more than one month; the automated phone service is another way to make an official date lookup. Neither requires you to guess from a birthday or from a calendar saved from a previous year.

For a quick estimate or to understand why a payment is scheduled on a particular day, use the rules below and then confirm the date against SSA’s calendar for that year. The Social Security Administration’s current 2026 calendar is Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments, Publication 05-10031, published in January 2026. SSA’s schedule page also links to the 2027 calendar. Because weekdays and holiday adjustments vary from year to year, use the current calendar rather than relying on an old list of monthly dates.
Identify which payment schedule applies
There is not one date rule for every person receiving money from Social Security. To narrow down the right calendar entry, compare the type of benefit, when the entitlement began, and whose work record supports the benefit. Then account for the date’s position in that year’s calendar. This order helps avoid a common mistake: applying the birthday-based Wednesday cycle before checking whether SSI or an older entitlement uses a different schedule.
Social Security on the usual birthday-based schedule
For most people whose Social Security entitlement is based on an application filed after April 30, 1997, the worker’s birth date determines which Wednesday of the month is the regular payment date:

- Birth date from the 11th through the 20th: third Wednesday.
- Birth date from the 21st through the 31st: fourth Wednesday.
The date that matters is generally the birth date of the worker whose earnings record supports the benefit—not necessarily the recipient’s own birthday. For example, if someone receives a benefit based on a spouse’s work record, the spouse’s birth date determines the regular Wednesday cycle.
Think of the birth-date ranges as a way to select a Wednesday group, not as a calendar date by themselves. A person born on the 8th and a person born on the 10th fall in the same range; both use the second-Wednesday group under the usual rule. Someone born on the 11th is in the next range and uses the third-Wednesday group. The actual numerical date of that Wednesday changes from month to month, so the range alone does not tell you the deposit date.
When a benefit is based on another worker’s earnings record, use that worker’s birthday for this comparison. Looking only at the recipient’s birthday can lead to the wrong Wednesday. If you are unsure whose earnings record supports your benefit, check the individual schedule through SSA rather than trying to infer the date from your own birth date.
SSI only
SSI-only payments are generally scheduled for the first of the month. Use the SSI designation on SSA’s annual calendar rather than applying the Social Security birthday-Wednesday rule. The SSI date is not selected by dividing the recipient’s or a worker’s birth date into the three Wednesday ranges.

For example, if you receive only SSI, the first-of-the-month rule is the starting point even if your birthday would put a Social Security benefit in the second-, third-, or fourth-Wednesday group. Check the SSA calendar for the actual date in the year you need, including any adjustment shown there.
Both Social Security and SSI
People who receive both types of benefits generally have separate scheduled dates: Social Security on the third of the month and SSI on the first. SSA’s annual calendar marks these cases, so check the entries for both payments.
Do not treat the two payments as a single deposit date just because they are both benefits received by the same person. The calendar identifies separate Social Security and SSI dates. If you are checking a specific month, find the entry for each benefit instead of assuming one date applies to both. The combined-benefit schedule also differs from the usual birthday-based Wednesday cycle for Social Security.
Entitlement based on an application before May 1, 1997
People entitled to benefits on an earnings record based on an application filed before May 1, 1997 generally remain on the third-of-the-month schedule, rather than moving to the usual birthday-based Wednesday cycle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis is a meaningful comparison point: the usual later schedule applies to most entitlements based on applications after April 30, 1997, while an entitlement based on an earlier application generally stays with the third-of-the-month schedule. Do not use the year of a recent payment or the current year to decide which side of this dividing date applies; the relevant distinction is the application timing on which the entitlement is based. If your situation is unclear, use SSA’s personal schedule to confirm it.
There are additional exceptions to the birthday schedule under federal rules. They include some people living outside the United States and some beneficiaries whose Medicare premiums are paid by their state. If your circumstances might fit an exception, confirm the date through your signed-in SSA schedule or its phone service instead of assuming the standard Wednesday rule applies.
Remember that benefits arrive the month after they are due
Social Security benefits are paid in the month after the month for which they are due. A benefit for July, for example, is paid in August. This distinction matters when you check a calendar: find the payment date for the benefit month, not simply a date within that same month.

It helps to separate two questions: “Which month’s benefit am I checking?” and “On what date is it scheduled to be paid?” A calendar entry in August may be the payment for a July benefit. If you are comparing the payment date with a bill or a past deposit, keep the benefit month and arrival month distinct so that you do not accidentally search the wrong month.

For SSI and for people receiving both SSI and Social Security, use the applicable labeled dates on SSA’s calendar. Do not assume that two benefits covering the same month will arrive together; the regular schedule for combined benefits assigns Social Security and SSI different dates.
Use the annual calendar to get the exact date
- Choose the right year. Open SSA’s annual payment calendar for the year in which you expect the deposit. The 2026 calendar is Publication 05-10031, published in January 2026; SSA’s schedule page also links to the 2027 calendar.
- Find your payment category. Check whether the calendar entry is for Social Security, SSI, or both. If you receive both, locate each payment separately.
- Apply the correct Social Security rule. For the usual post-April 1997 schedule, use the worker’s birth-date range to select the second, third, or fourth Wednesday. If your entitlement is based on an application before May 1, 1997, check the third-of-the-month schedule instead. Consider whether an exception may apply.
- Check the calendar date, not just the weekday rule. The Wednesday pattern identifies a regular cycle, but the calendar shows the actual date for that year and accounts for weekends and legal public holidays.
- Confirm your individual payment if needed. Use SSA’s signed-in payment schedule for upcoming and past payments, or call its automated service at 800-772-1213. For TTY, call 800-325-0778.
For example, suppose you are checking a Social Security payment and the benefit is based on a worker born on the 14th. Under the usual post-April 1997 rule, that birth date falls in the 11th-through-20th range, so the regular cycle is the third Wednesday. You would then look at the relevant month in that year’s SSA calendar to identify the actual date and see whether it has been adjusted. If the benefit is based on a spouse’s record, use the spouse’s birthday for this example, not automatically the recipient’s.
For an SSI-only payment, skip the birthday-range step and look for the SSI entry, generally scheduled for the first. For someone receiving both Social Security and SSI, locate both labeled entries: the Social Security payment is generally on the third and the SSI payment on the first. These examples show why identifying the category first is more useful than looking at a birthday alone.
The 2026 calendar is titled Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments and is Publication No. 05-10031, issued in January 2026. Since payment dates depend in part on which weekday a date falls, the schedule for one year should not be copied forward as if it were permanent. SSA’s schedule page links to its annual calendars, including the 2027 calendar; use the calendar for the year you are checking.
What happens when a payment date falls on a weekend or holiday?
If a regularly scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal public holiday, SSA pays benefits on the preceding business day. The date may therefore appear earlier than the nominal first, third, or fourth Wednesday—or earlier than the first or third of the month for another schedule. Check the annual calendar for the adjusted date rather than counting forward from the usual rule.
This adjustment is not a change to which schedule category applies. A worker’s birthday range still identifies the regular Wednesday group, and SSI or combined-benefit rules still identify their usual dates. The calendar then shows the date to use when the scheduled day coincides with a weekend or legal public holiday. In other words, calculate the category first, but rely on the annual calendar for the actual payment date.

SSA’s FAQ dated October 7, 2022, says that if the regularly scheduled date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal public holiday, benefits are paid the business day before the due date. This means an early-looking date can be the correct scheduled payment rather than a mistake. Check the calendar before concluding that a payment is late because it arrived before the nominal date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If your payment has not arrived
First compare the date you expected with SSA’s calendar and your personal payment schedule. If the payment is still missing on the expected date, SSA’s 2026 calendar instructs beneficiaries to allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security. The calendar gives that guidance for a payment that has not arrived; it does not change the scheduled date itself.

After allowing the additional mailing days, contact SSA if the payment is still missing. Its phone service is available at 800-772-1213; TTY users can call 800-325-0778. Keep the expected date and the payment month in view when you check your account or speak with SSA, since the benefit month and the month the money arrives are not always the same.
The instruction to allow three additional mailing days is specifically stated in SSA’s 2026 payment calendar. Use it after the expected date, not as a reason to add three days to every ordinary payment date when planning ahead. If you are unsure what date SSA has on record for you, first check the signed-in personal schedule or the automated phone service; those tools can help distinguish a calendar misunderstanding from a payment that has not arrived.
When you make the check, verify that you have the correct year, payment type, benefit month, and schedule category. A missing-looking payment can result from checking the month the benefit covers instead of the month it is paid, applying the birthday rule to SSI, or overlooking a preceding-business-day adjustment. Once those possibilities are ruled out, SSA’s instruction is to allow the additional mailing days and then contact the agency if the payment remains missing.
Common date-checking mistakes
- Using the recipient’s birthday automatically. On the usual birthday-based schedule, the controlling birthday is generally the worker’s whose earnings record supports the benefit.
- Looking for a benefit in the month it covers. Social Security benefits are paid the following month; a July benefit, for example, arrives in August.
- Applying one rule to every benefit. SSI-only, combined SSI and Social Security, and some older entitlements use schedules distinct from the usual birthday-based Wednesday cycle.
- Reusing a past year’s payment dates. The recurring schedule rules can identify the relevant weekday, but the exact calendar dates and holiday adjustments vary each year.
- Expecting a weekend or holiday payment on the nominal date. When the scheduled date falls on one of those days, payment moves to the preceding business day.
- Assuming two benefits have one shared date. For people receiving both Social Security and SSI, the regular dates are generally the third and the first, respectively. Check the calendar’s entries for each benefit.
- Confusing a scheduled date with a late payment. SSA’s 2026 calendar asks beneficiaries to allow three additional mailing days after an expected payment date before contacting the agency.
The quickest way to avoid these mistakes is to use the steps in sequence: identify the benefit type, decide whether the usual post-April 1997 birthday schedule or another stated category applies, account for the month-after payment timing, and check the annual SSA calendar. For a personal confirmation, use the signed-in schedule or automated phone service.

What day does Social Security come if I receive SSI too?
People who receive both Social Security and SSI generally have separate payment dates: Social Security on the third of the month and SSI on the first. Check both entries on SSA’s annual calendar; do not assume the two payments arrive together.
Does my birthday or my spouse’s birthday determine my Social Security payment date?
Under the usual birthday-based schedule, the controlling date is generally the birth date of the worker whose earnings record supports the benefit. If your benefit is based on your spouse’s work record, the spouse’s birth date determines the regular Wednesday group.
Why did my Social Security payment arrive before the date I expected?
If a regularly scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal public holiday, SSA pays on the preceding business day. Check the annual calendar for the adjusted date.
What should I do if my Social Security payment is missing?
Compare the expected date with your personal SSA schedule and the annual calendar. SSA’s 2026 calendar says to allow three additional mailing days after the expected date before contacting Social Security. If it is still missing, call 800-772-1213; TTY users can call 800-325-0778.
Are Social Security benefits paid in the month they cover?
Social Security benefits are paid in the month after the month for which they are due. For example, a July benefit is paid in August. Use the benefit month and the payment month as separate pieces of information when checking a calendar.
The Bottom Line
To find your Social Security payment date, identify whether you receive Social Security, SSI, or both, then apply the schedule category that fits your entitlement. For most later entitlements, the worker’s birthday selects the second, third, or fourth Wednesday; SSI-only payments are generally on the first, and combined benefits generally use the first for SSI and the third for Social Security. Check SSA’s current annual calendar for the exact date and any weekend or holiday adjustment, or confirm your personal schedule through SSA’s signed-in service or automated phone line.
